I think you just found my "home." (I'm typing this off the cuff, so bare with me...) I immigrated with my younger brother to the United States twenty nine years ago. I was barely twenty and my bro was almost fifteen. I did what most immigrants do in their new "home": put my head down, don't ask questions, just get in the grind. So I did. I am very thankful for the opportunity given to my brother and me. We're very grateful for the chance to provide some support to our love ones in the Philippines. We didn't want to waste it. So, we participated in the grind with purpose. Years went by. Things happened. School, military service, part time jobs, more school, etc. In the 29 years I've lived outside the Philippines, my concept of "home" became more complex because of the "grind." For first 19 years of my life, I called Baranggay Olympia in Makati my home. Then Maryland became home. Then Illinois. Upstate New York. Idaho. Now, California. All of those places are a part of me. Those places are my "home." In all these years, I have this fascination with the mountain region of Northern Luzon. It's like my "spiritual home." I can't explain it. I was born in Makati and I've never been to Baguio up until two months ago. I have no reference as to why I yearn to explore the northern part of Luzon. But as I get older, that yearning keeps on building up. So, two months ago, I dragged my husband across the Pacific Ocean, to explore Asia once again. This time, we made Baguio as one of our stops. On our way to Baguio, I remember getting more excited as my brother in law's car threaded up the windy road to the mountain town. When we got to Baguio, I felt calm and joy kinda washed over me. I felt really good. I felt home. Too bad we were only there for a long weekend. I'm back in San Francisco, but I can't wait to go back to the mountains of Northern Luzon. My fascination with Benguet has grown ten folds since that since trip to Baguio. But the fascination is not just that anymore. It has morphed into something else. I want to find a home in the mountains on Northern Luzon. Some place with a firmly rooted cultural heritage. But I don't want to find just a "new" home. If permitted, I want to find a community to join, respect its tradition, and help foster its culture. The trouble is I did not know where to start. Until now. So, thank you. Thank you for showing me where to start.
