Federal spending BLOCKED?

A federal judge on Tuesday temporarily blocked President Donald Trump from imposing a sweeping pause on federal spending, after the new White House policy caused significant disruptions to programs that fund schools, provide housing and ensure low-income Americans have access to healthcare.
The court prevented the restrictions from taking effect at least until Feb. 3, allowing a coalition of public-health advocates, nonprofits and businesses - represented by the left-leaning group Democracy Forward - to proceed with their case challenging the constitutionality of the Trump administration’s actions.
The decision arrived on a day of vast confusion and chaos in Washington, where few appeared to understand the scope and intention of a White House memo that had directed agencies to “temporarily pause” the disbursement of key funds. Even before it officially took effect at 5 p.m. Tuesday, thousands of government services - totaling billions of dollars and dedicated primarily to Americans’ health, safety and well-being - appeared to be at risk of shutting down, at least temporarily. Back before Trump was a politician he was pro clean energy. It makes sense for so many reasons: energy independence, less pollution, higher efficiency and the fact that oil will someday run out. Big oil has bought out so many politicians. Less dependence on fossil fuels threatens their bottom line. They are doing everything in their power to keep us hooked on fossil fuels.

Look at computer parts we physically cannot manufacture them and the US manufacturers almost none of them and definitely not the best ones. As for the spending issue at hand here, the reason no one can qoute any language from the Constitution is that it does not say anywhere that the executive branch, or anyone else, has to spend all of the funds appropriated by Congress. Going all of the way back to Thomas Jefferson deciding that the Navy didn't need the $50,000 Congress gave them to buy additional gunships, presidents routinely left money unspent that Congress had authorized. This went on right up until the Nixon administration when Congress passed the Impoundment Control Act of 1974. Under that act, the president can't unilaterally defy the wishes of Congress by refusing to implement spending for programs that they specifically authorized. However, under the act he can temporarily suspend spending for programs for 45 days to request Congress to revoke the funding authorization which is what he did and why they are calling it a temporary freeze on the spending instead of saying that the funding cuts are permanent. If Congress reauthorizes the spending within those 45 days, the funds must be released immediately. If Congress takes no action within 45 days, the funding goes back into effect at the end of the 45 days. Trump has suspended funding for these programs for 45 days, allowing the current republican controlled Congress time to decide if they want to revoke the funding that was authorized under the previous administration. He can also use the 45 days to audit the various agencies to determine which programs funding was authorized for specific programs and which programs are funded from a general budget. For instance, if the NIH was allocated a certain amount of funding to research mental health issues but Congress didn't specify which research studies would receive grants, Trump could cut funding to any studies of mental health issues of transgendered youths.

Not entirely! I had this concern too. It likely depends on if you qualify for additional money based on your race and household income. At the very least, you’ll get a base amount that’s similar to what someone like me, who is white and whose parents make a decent amount of money, will get. It’s not ideal, but it’s not nothing. DISCLAIMER: I don’t know if they’ll take household income into account for this (who knows what they count as “DEI”), or if identifying with a minority race affect the amount of money you receive for your FASFA. This is just a “worst case scenario” estimate.

Be warned that if you do so, you still got to pay taxes to America rather than the country you move to... an American citizenship is a form of indentured servitude in that you got to pay them no matter where you are or as they call it "citizenship based taxation"... they are aparently one of two nations in the world who do this btw. So before any plans are set, make sure that you take into account the costs of living where you intend to go, how much you would make there and how much you would pay in US taxes and the domestic taxes before you move. I've heard from an American friend about the horror story that was their family moving to Cyprus when they realised the US did this only after they had already moved, this was around 10 or so years ago though, but I doubt things have changed much.

I've been thinking a lot about how people approach voting and politics. I've heard plenty of complaints about different presidents-Biden, Trump, and even Kamala Harris, despite her not being president. And while criticism is fair, something that really bothers me is when people regret their vote but admit they didn't research or think critically before making their decision. I get that elections can feel like choosing between bad options, but if you make a choice, you have to own it. No one can predict the future perfectly, but we can at least try to understand policies instead of just listening to surface-level promises. If a candidate said, "I'll give everyone a free car," that sounds great at a glance, but what's the actual plan behind it? Too often, people vote based on slogans rather than real policies, and that's frustrating to see. Now, I'll be upfront-I'm not even old enough to vote yet. But if I, with an undeveloped prefrontal cortex, can recognize the importance of thinking critically, then surely adults can too. I don't say this to be rude; I just want people to take this process seriously. Elections have real consequences, and we owe it to ourselves and each other to make informed choices. What do you think? How can we encourage more people to research before voting?

This doesn't affect states' rights at all. The states can still do whatever they want, they just won't get federal funding for it. The states can still implement any program they want, they just have to pay for it from their own tax money instead of federal money. Just because a state has a right to offer a program doesn't mean the federal government has to pay for it. Texas has a right to issue an AR-15 to everyone that is legally allowed to poses a gun if they want to, that doesn't mean the federal government would be required to pay for it. California has a right to give free apartments to everyone that is homeless if they want to, that doesn't mean the federal government would be required to pay for it. There are plenty of reasons to oppose this, but states' rights isn't one of them.
