A subscriber asked how Elizabeth Holmes could only serve 18 months on a 60 month federal prison sentence. I break it down in this video and also encourage everyone to visit our subject matter expert page at prison professors. Here is the link:

At this point, as the reality of a prison term and the date of sentencing is looming larger and larger, she will say and do anything to get a lesser sentence. She will lie about various health crisis she is having. Going to see a drug addiction problem out of the blue. Still not counting out she will show up pregnant shortly before sentencing and try to postpone it.

From the people i talked to while in sheridan camp earlier this year, good time 15%, 1 year from RDAP, first step act up takes 15 days off for every 30 days working or programing. Your numbers are spot on! Its not a free ride, its a lot of work!

How’s it going so I got sentenced to 36 months in a federal prison in Michigan I don’t qualify for rdap. So I can qualify for: 1. 15 % good time credit right of the bat 2. first step act 15 days for every 30 days I complete in prison or sentenced in prison? 3. I may also qualify for 9 months in a half way house… Am I missing anything else?

What are the rules for FSA classes? 10 days off per 30 days of completed class? So can a person takes multiple classes in 30 days to receive more time off? Example, complete 4 classes in 30 days = 40 days off.

I'm in the group that believes she deserves a significant sentence. The financial losses she caused warrant it. But since the victims were among the mega-rich and could absorb the losses, I think that will help her. I don't think there were any old senior citizens that lost their homes or were left broke. But the scale of her fraud was so huge and her actions so bad, I think she deserves 15 or 20 years. My guess is she will receive 2-3 years, and be out much sooner.

I heard a crazy stat in a podcast a few days ago. Forgive me if my numbers are not perfectly accurate but, with only 5% of the world's population, the US has an incarceration rate that has increased 500% over the last 40 years, is the highest in the world (with more prisoners than China), and holds 22% of all the prisoners in the world. It's hard to balance those stats against your description of factors that mitigate time served. Your example is inspiring and is proof that there is life and rehabilitation after prison. Much as I find Elizabeth Holmes to be a thoroughly unpleasant character, I have to accept that she deserves as much chance to rehabilitate her life as anyone else.
