The Miranda Class. a 23rd century ship that was still in use over a century later. That just shows how reliable it was. Also, it's your starting ship in Star Trek Online if you start with the Federation.
@WardenWolf2 жыл бұрын
It makes sense. The Miranda class was a light cruiser while the Constitution was a heavy cruiser. Starfleet only seems to keep a single front-line class in service at a time, the exception being the Excelsiors due to their built-in adaptability. Second-line ships, with their smaller crew requirement, are more suited to second lives as cargo ships and research vessels once their weapons and defensive systems are no longer up to par. So the Constitutions phased out but the Mirandas kept on.

@imkluu4 жыл бұрын
And it is all pretty much wasted space.
@obsidiansands4 жыл бұрын
@@imkluu the wasted space served a purpose: labs for experiments, evacuation/colonization roles, defense, combat, etc. It was essentially a multi-role vessel. According to several wikis, it's a deep space exploration vessel that doubled as a mobile mini-starbase. It HAD to be self-reliant; hence why it had a TON of replicators that ranged from food replicators, to industrial sized replicators that can churn out parts for the ship. Starfleet made that thing to be modular - the replaceable bridge is a good example. The fact that the original design of the Galaxy class included schools for kids meant that they were also going for a semi-multi generational vessel. It's mission for long deep space exploration also points to the ship being able to be upgradable inside and out. So it being huge AF was intentional, to give it "room to grow". Even in the first episode, they were also ferrying people to Fairpont Station as part of her live-fire shakedown cruise. In that ep, Picard actually complained to having kids along as a permanent part of the crew since Starfleet practically mandated that crewmembers are allowed to ship off with their families on such a vessel due to its intention of being a deep space exploration vessel that won't need to see a main starbase for years on end. The Enterprise was a huge step up for Picard from his former command, the Stargazer - a ship that was purely a "Starfleet" vessel without non-combatants aboard. It was smaller, needed to see Starbases for resupply runs, crew changes, repairs, etc. Having Q introduce the Borg pretty much shocked the Federation out of their complacency, they were entering a renaissance in wanting to explore space again as pioneers - until Q gave them a much-needed kick up the ass to make them realize that there are still dangers that could (and would) destroy them. That's when their design philosophy started changing, until they almost started being complacent again and nearly abandoned the idea of more warships until the Dominion war came about. Basically, Defiant was a step in the right direction - but got mothballed. The next major design philosophy that came about after the Defiant was the Prometheus - another actual warship that seems to have fixed some of the issues they encountered while designing the Defiant.

Size isn't everything. Look at the Defiant.
@DTSephiroth10 жыл бұрын
True, but remember the Defiant is designed specifically to be a war ship. It didn't need to do anything else and thus it was designed with minimal crew needs, armor, weaponry, essential systems, and not much else. The Galaxy Class is primarily an exploratory vessel. Yes it has decent firepower, but the ship has to be self reliant out in the far reaches of space. That takes a larger crew and more space and systems. The Defiant relied on DS9 for its maintenance and repair needs. Also, the Galaxy Class was basically a luxury liner. Just look at the size of the crew quarters on the Enterprise-E Compared to the bunks on the Defiant. Both ships are awesome in their own way. They simply serve specific purposes. In a fight, I'd take the Defiant over the Enterprise-E, but for general purpose, I'd want something bigger than the Defiant.

@LoneBrowncoat7 жыл бұрын
I really despise it when TNGer's use the Okuda designations, rather than the original, the Reliant was an Avenger class Heavy Frigate [why'd you think it had those heavy phaser cannons and torpedo launchers fore and aft? To kick the crap out of D-7s and K'tingas] born out of the refit of the Surya class Frigates. The Grissom was a Glenn class scout/science vessel, named after the Apollo and STS Astronauts. Then Rick Berman's crew mucked up the scaling on that model for "The Pegasus" which made the model appear larger [and in taking it out of storage, they repaired/altered the physical appearance a bit] so you could say that the larger versions were Oberth class [and in some episodes prior and after, but still a science vessel] both before and after that episode. In the same era as the Surya, were the Coventry class Frigates, though never onscreen at any time they were in the same coffee-table book, and more of a medium workhorse, as they had all the facilities of a Constitution class but less expensive, so more were made than the Connies and possibly replaced the Independence class armed Freighters {Pirates of Orion} since they were faster and better equipped to deal with the Orion Pirate and Syndicate Ships. However, the Mastercom series of books are post-TMP and TWOK but pre-TUC, and long out of print, AFAIK, which adds to the confusion.

But part of striving for a better future means accepting and acknowledging the worst if humanity and the darkness of it all.
@MURD3RMAK3R9 жыл бұрын
Randy Rhoades exactly, and they did that. Which is why they are an example of what we could become if we did the same. Although, writers have been trying to make ST more darker since DS9, which is slowly making ST look more like today's society with space ships.
@RandyLRhoades9 жыл бұрын
Technically speaking that might make it a good thing because you're being more direct and much more about the message of a story. People don't like it when people from a supposed "Better lifestyle" ect. come in and tell them what to do, I am a Trek fan and I believe in the ideals of Star Trek but there is a bit of realism in making The Federation society more accurately and more realistic and not all perfect like Gene intended it to be. Technically speaking if Star Trek truly were a Utopia, there'd be NO CONFLICT at all; which is the point of TOS and TNG, it shows that even in the future passed all our modern problems that we will inevitably always get passed through in time, that there'd still be similar if not worse problems in the future. If we brought a person from the early 1800's into our time today, that person would perceive our world as a Utopia of sorts even though some of the more cynicals of our time would go through great lengths to deny. Meanwhile the Ancestor would tell tales of how the threat of dying from animals in the wilderness or poisonous food and how the government is being split into a Civil War and that the coal mines were the best ways to make money but like all jobs differed in pay and that payment enveloped into how much the boss likes your work instead of being guaranteed equal payment like the rest and how African American's were slaves and were forbidden to learn how to read and that any "Free Man" could have been taken into custody by the Confederacy on accusation of being a runaway slave alone and be totally legal, so on and so forth. The point is, things will always get better, it's like Captain Picard once said; "Vigilance Mr. Worf. That is the Price we have to pay."
@nccmax9 жыл бұрын
Randy Rhoades What do you not understand. You HAVE realistic today, enjoy it! ST is about what we can be, it is an ideal to strive for. If you can't accept when some one smarter tells you that you are wrong, then that is your problem, get over it (i know nothing of you, i was talking in general).
@RandyLRhoades9 жыл бұрын
nccmax I am sure it is you my good sir who does not understand. As a longtime fan since my early teenage years I must say that I find that the fans do not like it when Star Trek goes into a darker aspects always a rather hypocritical move by my fellow fanbases' part. Star Trek is not perfect, the Federation is not perfect and it certainly never will be which is the whole point of the series. It;s purpose to say that we will get through all our troubles eventually but there will always be crossroads and challenges that need to be made and things that we may not even want to think of; HAVE to be spoken of and dealt with. ST is not a religion where it creates morals for you and that you have to look up to it as those who follow a particular religion with their religious texts. It's meant to be a thought provoking television series that has morality aspects but isn't afraid to stray away from them at times. It dealt with serious dark moments (especially early season 1 TOS) and made them into great stories that can make you think. It's okay to feel inspired by Trek but by no means is it meant to be the all powerful and all good of who and what we can become,.

Honestly SF Debris breaks down a great idea as to where that movie could have gone to make it feel more worthy of a movie instead of feeling like a TV episode which was my only real problem with it. Have the crew come into conflict not only with the Son'a and Ba'ku but for the first time each other as well. Have the crew pitted against each other with Picard, Data and Beverly siding with the Ba'ku against the federation relocation givin how it's against the core principles of the federation and how it will result in these people's deaths, and Riker, Worf and Geordi siding with the Son'a and Federation due to having actually experienced the horrors of the Dominion War and how the particles of the Ba'ku planet could be used to save billions of lives thus creating a needs of the many vs needs of the few situation. The hardest part I think is to make both sides have absolutely valid points so there really isnt a good or bad side (somthing when Trek pulls off is usually done incredibly well), and this making the division more powerful as you really dont know which side to root for.

After a while (Gene Roddenberry's passing) a lot of the ships started going against his design aesthetic. Although some were real cool looking, they just did not have the grace of the classic or the refit. I LOVED the Star Trek: Insurrection theme playing in the background. Star Trek: Insurrection, to me was a great movie. I loved the episodic feel and tenor to it, and I loved how this theme played in the opening of the film and credits showing the peaceful Baku population and then went hard and frantic as the Sona were chasing Data through the village. The stark contrast between the calm peace of the Baku and the interference of that peace by the Federation and Sona still gets me every time I watch it.

Ugly ship? Subjective. It's the first Enterprise, so you don't expect it to be better than the later ones. Though it does look wildly better than the TOS ships. Insane captain? It's the only one where the captain isn't portrayed as some infallible god who triumphs every time just because he's the main character. Also, he's the only captain who realizes that they are in fact a military operation, and doesn't lie to himself that they are "peaceful explorers". Boring characters? Other than Spock and Bones in TOS, there isn't one single non-captain in ANY of the series who isn't incredibly dull. Phlox, Shran, Hoshi, Reed, Mayweather, - all extremely interesting Poorly thought out stories? LMAO! Its the only one where every goddamn episode isn't mind-numbingly predictable. Other than the awful "temporal cold war" episodes, the series is goddamn good. And who cares about the continuity gaffs? I'm not quite sure about all of these, I think the Sovereign class might have been a little bigger then the Galaxy class, but I could be wrong, as the Galaxy class was built for exploration, battle if necessary (as it often was), and to house families. The Sovereign class was built for exploration (as that's Starfleets main purpose), but it was more specifically built to be a battle ship (as Starfleet started building ships built more for battle in the 24th century, starting with the Defiant class but then they got bigger, as they had to build battle ships, even if they didn't want to but they had no choice with the growing threats from both the Dominion and the Borg), The Sovereign class didn't house families for this reason, it was a battle ship. I still thought it was bigger then the Galaxy class though, but as I said, I could be wrong, as size isn't everything.
@PetersonZF10 жыл бұрын
It doesn't need to be physically bigger to be more powerful. A Defiant class could take out a Galaxy class in a straight fight.
@shiningarmor359710 жыл бұрын
The Sovereign was actually less massive than a Galaxy class, also it had a smaller crew complement (around 200 less if memory serves). The Galaxy was an exploration ship, the Sovereign was built mostly for diplomacy, which for some reason meant more fire power... A retrofit Galaxy vs a Sovereign would be a balanced fight, but in terms of war which the Federation encountered more and more of as time progressed, the Sovereign was a 'cheaper' ship with less lives on the line than a retrofit Galaxy
@shiningarmor359710 жыл бұрын
PetersonZF Not true, a Defiant class could take on a retrofit Excelsior class which was still weaker than a Galaxy class... if a Galaxy class was equipped with quantum torpedoes the Defiant class, even the USS Defiant itself (with its own quantums) would be torn to bits.

Nova Class is just a small planetary survey/science vessel, designed for short range missions. It was intended to replace the old Oberth Class science vessels which were also very small. Interested to note, according to the DS9 technical manual, the basic spaceframe of the Nova class was originally designed to be the defiant class, but when the Defiant design went in a different direction this spaceframe was shelved for a time before later being dusted off and reincarnated as the Nova class.

@darwinxavier351610 жыл бұрын
The size of the Romulan D'deridex class Warbird is misleading. There is a ginormous hole in the middle of the ship. The exact reason for this I haven't found. But my guess is that it was designed to intimidate the enemy by making itself look larger than it actually is. If we were to scrunch it down it would still be a little more massive than a Galaxy class. However, how much of the warbird's mass is actually necessary is uncertain. Federation ships are very pragmatically designed with little waste for aesthetics. The 4 wings of the warbird could simply be overly massive nacelle pylons.
@KristerAndersson-nc8zo10 жыл бұрын
CaptainCognitive Well Kirk was not that hippielike since the PC concept has not been invented in the middle of the sixties. Think about it I am certain your navy as well as mine have survey vessels, icebreakers, laundryships and so on, what do you get if you put missilebatteries on a surveyship? Simple, a lousy naval vessel right? Then take the hippies in their longjohns, no we do not need warships we surrender all the time, having some dreadnoughts and heavy cruisers is just so plain wrong. That is why I prefer B5 or the mirror universe.

Maybe include the Yonanda, a generation ship for TOS that had been traveling for 10,000 years presumably some of which being off course. The original version of the episode it was in, had Spock saying it was driven by Orion tubes implying by atomic explosions hence a technology we currently have. For some reason, the updated CGI episode removed that line.

As much as I loved TNG as a show, really does anybody disagree with me on this, I wouldn't understand why anybody would disagree, but I think the Enterprise-D, or the Galaxy class starship in general to be more specific really looked stupid. It just looked like a much bigger, clunkier version of the Constitution class, but the Sovereign class (which the Enterprise-E was) I think looked awesome, it was exactly what a bad ass good guy starship should look like.

Depended on the angle. In later seasons when newer footage of the D was filmed some of the angles the D looked gorgeous. For instance, that side profile it looked intimidating.
@gmon7810 жыл бұрын
I disagree. The Sovereign Class looks far more like the Constitution Class than the Galaxy ever did. I will say this though, the Galaxy Class is only good looking for certain angles. From others, it looks daft. Constitution on the other hand looks great from any angle. One of the reasons that it is the prettiest ship ever seen in Star Trek:)

triple nacelle version of the Enterprise D looked much more balanced. Problem with that ship is the saucer was so big compared to the rest of the ship.

Disagree completely, While the six foot model had a more clunky/blocky look to it; the ship is a definite beauty at any angle with a nice pristine white to it. The ship looked alive and took a means of looking and feeling more futuristic than even the Sovereign.

Ill actually defend the Engineering section in the JJ movies, a Matter-Anti Matter reactor I feel should look like somthing that you dont just go screwing with. However the outside design yeah it feels off like its a mix of a more modern designed starfleet ship and TOS era one, but I do prefer it to the original constitution class of TOS which looked kind of clunky instead of advanced. Not sure about the others but the Prometheus has four because it splits apart into three independent modules and two of them get a pair of the warp nacelles each. Although that always struck me as strange since it looks like one of the modules isn't warp capable because it doesn't have warp engines unless they're internal somehow.

Constitution and galaxy class Dreadnoughts have three engines
@VideoSpaceFX8 жыл бұрын
Using a real world example, the A330 and A340 airliners have the same fuselage but one has 2 and the other 4 smaller engines. The 2 engined plane is more fuel efficient but potentially less safe as you get a 50% loss with a one engine failure. In-universe you could say that the Constellation class was planned with smaller nacelles that ending up having design issues, so it was decided to go with what worked even if that meant she was over-engineered in terms of propulsion. Picard's line that the Stargazer was "overworked and underpowered" could refer to the fact that the warp reactor was not up to the task of fulfilling the full capability of the 4-nacelle design. End of conjecture.
@samualbickensworth18310 жыл бұрын

Dont oyu think you ma be a tiny bit biased saying that. Take a lcoser look. The miranda is mostly a reconfiguration of the Constitution's components. the centaur is essentialy an Excelsior Saucer with warp engines straped to it. Most early TNG ship designs are a reconfiguration of the galaxy's components. Heck the nebula is basicaly a miranda using Galaxy parts. I realy owudnt be praising the crativity in ship design until lwe get to the Dominion War/First Contact era when they stoped making kitbashes and REALY started making unique ships like the intrepid, Defian, Akira etc. Not that I blame the creators. They hadno choice but modify existing models becouse of their limited budget.

1 mile = 1609.34 m = 1.60934 km So miles are closer to kilometers. So 305 meters = 333.552 Yards Google has a calc for this if you type in the values in the search field.
@VideoSpaceFX9 жыл бұрын
+Kitzy kat Well I'm British and we have to use both. All road signage is legally required to be in feet, yards and miles. Some height restrictions also have metric but MUST display "imperial" measurement if they are on a public road. Surprising question considering Star Trek itself and scientists use metric?!
@MoonarEclipse9 жыл бұрын
VideoSpaceFX well in america we have to use both as well in science and stuff but naturally we don't THINK in metric system... like i want to be able to imagine how long a starship would really be, but i don't think in metric system so i'd convert it over to miles for me to put perspective into it so like if something was 300 miles long and i know it takes 300 miles to get from one end of alabama to another... then i know that whatever it is, is as long as alabama which is huge wtf
