Roger Federer won 7 games in a row after a 6 months injury comeback as the 17th seed at the age of 35 vs the younger and healthy, hard hitting 10th seeded Berdych. It was amazing to see that match. This victory gave him the confidence to go on and win the 2017 Australian Open vs Rafa Nadal.

I'll be honest, I'm a big tennis fan, but over the years I've generally preferred to watch highlights over live matches, because.... well obviously it's only the best parts of the match covered, plus you miss out on all the breaks between points and change overs etc. There are plenty of exceptions to this, Federer being the main culprit, but some Dustin Brown matches are phenomenal to watch, some 2009 Del Potro matches are wonderful, and I really enjoy watching Wawrinka's French Open victory over Djokovic. There are others of course, including the likes of Steffi Graff and Jimmy Connors v John McEnroe (although admittedly I watch that match up less for the tennis and more for the drama), but in terms of highest level of tennis played with aggressive and entertaining play, Federer, Del Potro and Wawrinka at their peaks are my faves. 2017 Federer is just special though, such a joy to watch, almost any match he plays I could watch live, and in the Australian Open (my favourite tournament) I think his skills were highlighted best. In many ways I think this is the pick of Federer's performances, especially because Berdych is such a tough competitor, he actually played an amazing game considering how confidence-sapping it must have been facing Federer in that mood and form.

Personally I preferer watching Full matches as it is so interesting to watch players adjustments throughout the match, the momentum shifts and how players treats each and every point. Only problem is, it is long, and sometimes we have got better things to do !
@Bedrinonen Жыл бұрын
@@nicolaswhitehouse3894 If I had more patience and wasn't interested in so many other things (and tennis is just a game after all, not that there's anything wrong with enjoying watching games and other things that don't really matter, we all need to unwind somehow), I would genuinely love to learn more about the deep tactics within the game like that, what you are talking about (constant adjustment and re-adjustment) seems to be something which Djokovic is unbelievably good at, and I'd love to learn why, or why I'm actually wrong in that assumption. In terms of the best I've seen of that kind of overt constant re-adjustment within a highlight-length live contest (5-20 mins) was the 2008 Fed v Nadal Wimbledon Final.

I don't look at it as a surprise. Berdych wasn't in his peak form anymore. Let's take into account that he was already on the verge of getting out of the top 10 (he was seeded n10 here) and that only 2 years later he would retire (2019). Moreover, Federer always had the edge over him on their H2H therefore the Swiss was confident about his chances. Yeah, the media treated this win as a miracle of sorts but in reality Federer match-up wise always had the advantage over Berdych, both tennis wise and mentally. By the way, during his first years on tour Berdych's game was really praised. Andre Agassi's commented on his potential in his autobiography "Open".

That match was funny. Berdy did not know what hit him. Fed was also not that fit during the tournament, but it was such a great run and turn of events.

Berdych never has much weapon against Federer? He has beaten him many times before and there were many super close matches between them.
@jimmychan9582 Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisPBacon-lu6wd Just searched online, from 2014 until the last time they met in 2018, Berdych has lost the last 9 matches between them only winning one set off Fed out go the 9 matches, still not one sided enough? Ofcos Berdych is a decent player not to bagel every set, but his game is just too one dimensional to handle Fed.
@ChrisPBacon-lu6wd Жыл бұрын
@@jimmychan9582 but their rivalry started way before 2014. Berdych reached his peak in 2015 and was mostly downhill from there with a few really good tournaments here and there. I believe they were already playing against each other a lot since like 2005 or 2006.

weak era champ at his supreme best. Beating up weak players and winning slams laying hide and seek with GOAT Djokovic. Lucky for federer that Djokovic was injured in the 17/18 season. No party for federer before or after that for a decade
@1987rathan2 жыл бұрын
Weak era!! That's what Federer is capable of. Making you feel that his era players are all weak. He is class above Djokovic for a simple reason. Federer after his loss in any game is loved by people for his elegance. However, Djokovic after beating a federer in GS final is hated by people. Playing ugly baseline game is one thing. Losing graciously is another thing. Djokovic is always third after federer and nadal. People won't love him even if he wins 100 slams. Statistics alone won't help Djokovic.
