I can tell Hans is a proud , old school watchmaker in the Swiss tradition. I appreciate his candor. You can tell he doesn’t work for a brand otherwise he wouldn’t be able to speak so freely. I'm no Hans, but... The jewel (ruby or sapphire) needs to be machined to match the profile of the pivot it is receiving. Using diamond-bit tooling it is possible to mass produce interchangeable parts out of rubies & have one lot of parts match the next. If you were trying to machine the same part out of diamond then your tooling would wear out too fast to make thousands (or millions) of parts that are all perfectly interchangeable. Even if you had your watch jewels milled from diamond your watch wouldn't necessarily run any better. The jewel needs to be finished as smooth as possible & it needs to be harder than the steel pivot it is receiving. Ruby satisfies that requirement just fine, & changing to diamond wouldn't really improve the function of the watch.

Great information. You have confirmed my suspicions about the ETA 2824. I have always wondered why people would consider paying a huge amount for a watch with this movement when in reality the watch contains the same basic movement as a $500 watch with an ETA 2824. Tudor comes to mind as a company that has offered this movement in rather expensive watches. While I admire their products I can’t understand why anyone would pay $3000 for a Tudor with a 2824 given what you have exposed here.
@marcocastagnetti70864 жыл бұрын
A Tissot for £400 with a eta 2824 is not going to be on the same level as a Tudor for £2000 eventhough they may share the same movement the quality will show in other areas, basically there's more to a watch that just the movement.
@scottc69464 жыл бұрын
I think that’s why Tudor now has in house movements. If you pay good money for a watch, you want quality inside and out
@bm51924 жыл бұрын
Gotta pay for that marketing and their brand ambassador's

It's still a great movement. Note that Hans is using it for his own machine.
@tudorserban1114 жыл бұрын
People get hung up on the movement too much I think. As Hans said in another video, it takes about 10 years to iron out all the issues with a new in house movement. In house is by no means of better quality than a generic movement, which has been tried and tested for many years and by many watch brands. Case in point, Tudor's latest fiasco with the in house movement used in the Black Bay GMT.

I got a question for Hans: Why is it always rubies that are used and seldomly diamonds? Thank you for all the great videos! P.S.: love the Moser
@guannan50854 жыл бұрын
based on my understanding, diamonds don't hold the lubricating oil as well as synthetic jewels. Maintenance becomes a problem
@janihellberg69114 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, the rubies arent real but synthetic and they aren't very expensive. Diamonds, even synthetic ones would be much more expensive. In finland they aren't called rubies, but the word to word translation is somethin along the lines of "running stones".

I was considering a Zenith El Primero 21 Defy to add to my collection, but now listening to the perspective of Hans I am a bit hesitant. That watch movement is one of a kind. There is no other chronograph with this performance level! Do you believe Zenith or any other brand would achieve a 1/1000ths of a second accuracy without silicone in their movement?
@technicaldirectorhorology56634 жыл бұрын
Don't know Hans's opinion. The 21 Defy Zenith has two independent systems in order to measure 1/100 (not 1/1000) second they use actually the old fashioned lever escapement (Steel and rubies) because the silicone one would break itself. The main watch has the unfortunate silicone escapement (+/-15 seconds a day) which also eventually will break over time. I love that watch and would also purchase one. Shame on them.

I don't think that there is such a thing as low grade and chronometer grade ETA 2824-2. The ETAChron adjustment system allows for fine adjustments which can bring the movement to COSC standards. By the way, in 2011, a Tisssot sporting a ETA 2824-2 won (the class classique) of the Le Locre International Chronometry Competition with 764 points out of 1000 ahead of a F.P. Journe Chronomètre Souverain with 488 points. Considering all the years of the competition so far, the top watch is a Greubel-Forsey Double Tourbillon Technique with 915 points, followed by a Tissot T-Complication Chronometer (UNITAS 6498-2) with 908 points. Finally, Fritz von Osterhausen in his book "Wristwatch Chronometers" writes: "It is impossible to distinguish a mechanical chronometer wristwatch from a normal wristwatch of the same calibre with naked eye. (...) The chronometer derives its distinctive characteristics - high and uniform precision in any position and at different temperatures - which distinguish it from regular wristwatches, not from different construction or quality; but from one additional step in manufacture, which is not done with other movements of the same calibre and same movement quality: this is the regulation".
@enriqueali4 жыл бұрын
People like Parmigiani and Journe came to their present watchmaking careers via initially restoring and rebuilding historic and vintage pieces. Roger W. Smith became an apprentice to the late great George Daniels. Would be interesting to hear his thoughts in that particular process of learning to master one's craft

Thank you for another great video with Hans and thank you for returning to the question about the various ETA grades! I’m not a professional watchmaker but I am an enthusiast and I have serviced and repaired a few ETA 2824-2s (my first service here: www.watchrepairtalk.com/topic/11734-eta-cal-2824-2-17-jewels-disassemblyassembly/?tab=comments#comment-107021 ). Yes, from a watchmaker’s point of view when it comes to servicing, repairing, and regulating there is basically no difference between the lower-grade (Standard and Elaboré) and higher-grade (Top and Chronometre) ETAs. However, I’d say temperature-insensitive alloys for certain parts such as the balance wheel are required to meet the requirements of COSC and that is only available in the Top and Chronometre grades. In most situations and in most locations, there will be no timekeeping differences in a well-regulated Standard or Chronometer grade movement. However, if you live in an environment where temperatures differ a lot it will make a difference and, in those cases, the lower grades will for sure not meet the specifications of COSC. In the extreme, a $400 Hamilton housing an Elaboré 2824-2 will not perform as well as a $4000 Breitling housing a Chronometer 2824-2. So, in my opinion, and will all due respect; no, it’s not just a matter of marketing.
