I’ve noticed that a lot of the farmers I watch switched from Y-drops to 32% in ground side dressing. They said it’s a lot less waste(less dissipation on the surface) root contact & price. Ydrops are messy & hard to clean thoroughly too. Anything dealing with fertilizer it appears to be difficult bc it eats through everything
@aTrippyFarmer
@aTrippyFarmer Жыл бұрын
There is a lot that is left up in the air, no pun intended, when laying a highly volatile chemical on the surface like 32%. I can see why farmers lean both ways. I am still undecided on how I would like to move forward.

@@aTrippyFarmer Well, if you want to see some comparisons(equipment & application) while you’re out spraying I have some suggestions to watch. Ivers Farms(Illinois/Indiana) & Brian’s Farming Videos(Ohio) switched to in ground. Cole the Cornstar (Iowa) uses Ydrops. He goes into cost/benefits. I noticed that a lot switched to in ground last year bc of fertilizer costs & saw improvement, but can’t remember who else did what. I’m addicted to farmtubers🤣Got my husband hooked too.

@@aTrippyFarmer Hartung’s had a tank on the farm that got damaged & had a big leak. Scary as hell. He was filming when he saw it & had to run bc he was down wind. He has livestock too. As you know, it sucks the oxygen out of the air. A cloud of it is deadly. I’ve seen tornados puncture huge tanks this year too. Scary stuff.

@agger838 we haven't started, ours is custom done wasn't going to do any till it rained. Didn't rain we would save our money. I'm 40 miles south and east of Andy near Indiana border. This is year 4 of ydrops for us, been great, we noticed first year got 3 tenths on it after seeing the corn funnel water down to the ground worked great. I like to run a 32 bar way late to get benefit of sidedress. We're usually going at 6 to 7 leaf area and have done some taller sometimes weather don't work. 24 rows of ydrops works quite well for us. With a hagie you don't run over much corn at all. Everyone is different for sure. Last year we were able to cut back on our lighter dirt about 6 gallon of 32% due to wasn't going to be a high yielding crop, cutting back a little this year 10 lbs is it much no, but we are running 3 gallon of ats this year compared to 2. We did use a liquid deal to help hold it in form. NTB bars in my area there are none, one guy did it, after 3 years they sold it for ydrops they were doing a lot of custom work, said way to high maintenance.

Side dressing with a liquid bar is easy work compared to anhydrous. Switching to liquid was the best decision we’ve ever made. Doing 2x the acres per hour vs 2 anhydrous bars and we pick up liquid at any local co op because it wasn’t economical to drive to the bigger hubs to save 20-30$ a ton

Andy, I agree with you the importance of using 32 I am not a fan of why dropping I just don’t see how you’re getting all the usage when you’re just laying it on the ground versus knifing it in. I see the value of that on the other piece of this puzzle of over using nitrates is using variable rate technology that’s where you see the return on investment
@aTrippyFarmer
@aTrippyFarmer Жыл бұрын
I go back and forth on the Y-drops. They go against my logic on incorporating nitrogen. At the same time, they are logistically incredible compared to other methods except for maybe top-dressing. You can play the wait for a rain game with them, or you can just run with a stabilizer and hope for the best. My only gripe with the sidedressing is that they put a lot of weight on the ground, and you can normally tell where the bars ran. That is just the nature of the beast, but I’d love to not see that.
