Feeding baby mockingbird

Feeding a baby mockingbird. I'm using a diet from StarlingTalk.com but if you don't have all the ingredients listed, soaked cat food is fine to use in a pinch.

I feed my two mockingbirds( Harper and Lee) a mixed diet of mealworms and crickets. Make sure you kill the bugs before feeding them to the babies.

I've raised a mockingbird on moist balls of crushed bloodworms and mealworms, and when he grew older his main diet consisted of mealworms with some fruit. It probably wasn't the best, but he was very healthy and did great on that diet!

You can buy formula for baby birds at Petsmart. But the best thing to do is take the bird to a rescue where they can give it expert care, such as an incubator. You also have to be really careful with baby birds that the food (and water, too) don’t go into their lungs as you’re feeding them.

I saw this close up video of baby mockingbirds being fed by their parents in a bush. It's like he put the camera almost in the nest. It's really cool. The channel is called davao jack or something like that. I hope this baby survived. I think you are feeding it too fast.

Hi again, thanks for your reply : ) The only reason i clicked on your adorable video is because i have a rescue…still around…about a month old now. I really needed to know what to feed the bird. Apparently Kelly Outler needed to know as well. But that's okay; there are a lot of others that are willing to share what they use/d. ...I used about 2 Tblspoons of 9Lives Daily Essentials cat food. Add just enough water to barely cover the food…let it soak for about 35 min, so it is completely soft (but NOT watery). I began adding pulverized egg shell/powder & mashed boiled egg for calcium & other nutrients because mockingbirds are prone to rickets, i've discovered. My rescue is flying freely outside now, but still returns to the back porch for food. I also provide live mealworms & crickets (found at a local petstore) & was feeding with dull tweezers until it started to pick them up on it's own. I tried to post a video, but it wouldn't go through :( …Your video is adorable though, thanks for sharing :)

JFerFer We found one today hanging from the nest with thread/string wrapped tight around an upper leg, that the parents had used in the nest. We got him down and with stitch scissors I was able to very very carefully get the thread/string removed from his leg.. tho it is cut very deep on that upper leg and the other one for some reason is all twisted . Looks like some physical therapy will be needed to get them both under him, and I keep opening the foot so he will be able to perch someday.... and hope the cut heals! Meanwhile I tried the formula food for parrots and though he would open his mouth for it, I worried that it was not easy for him to swallow, and if it was too soupy, I could get it in his lungs. I found dried meal worms at the feed store, and put them in some water and boy, is he loving those. They don't really soften up but I use the tweezers to pick one up at a time and there is a little tiny bit of water on each of them. Will definitely try a little boiled egg yolk too and see if the pet stores have some live mealworms! I so hope he makes is. The same pair lost two babies spring of 2014 and then raised two in the summer. This year the spring babies were gone after another big rain storm, and now just this one, and he was dying a horrible death after today's rain storm, out of the nest but hanging upside down, fluttering. I happened to look up, to check to see if the nest was still there after the storm (they built is above the one from last year but quite a bit higher... it was a FEAT to get a long ladder up against a flimsy limb to reach the baby!) or it would have soon been too late. Glad to see some of the videos - this one is the exact same age at least.. with his wing feathers... The advice is helpful!

No one answers the most important question. HOW AND WHAT DO WE HAVE AT HOME TO MAKE BABY MOCKING BIRD FOOD??? FOUND AN OLDER ONE ON THE GROUND AND IT DRANK WATER EASY, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT I CAN MIX AT HOME TO FEED IT. OATMEAL? all these long videos are great and all but they need to get to the point. HELP US MAKE BABY BIRD FOOD AT HOME!

vasallizinni No need to be ornery. When in a pinch, soaked cat or dog food with boiled egg, applesauce and a tums for calcium. Never give a baby water. That will aspirate them. Once they are eating on their own, then it's ok to give them a little bowl of water. If you don't have eggs, applesauce and tums, just soaked cat or dog food.

Find a local wildlife rehab and bring it to them. In the meantime, feed it some soaked cat food. Make sure you keep it warm.

Ryan Sheffield I raised mine from 4 days old until one and a half months old and I started out by feeding them soggy dog/cat food. Put either in a bowl of water and let it soak for about 2 hours or until its extremely soggy/soft. After a while you should start to feed them fruit. Mockingbirds usually eat grapes, orange halves and raisins. But make sure its small enough for then to be able to chew. So since its been about 3 weeks since you've commented I am guessing that if you still have them then start to feed them these fruits.

The Fons baby songbird diet. There's a recipe online. It's either Fons or Fonz. But it's the best thing for them to thrive and grow.

With mockingbirds it's impossible to tell because the male and female look alike. You can tell for sure with a DNA test. When I have a pet bird and nee to know what sex it is, I get the free kit from AvianBiotech.com and they offer a feather collector kit, where you need to pluck several blood feathers from the bird's chest, or you can clip their nail a little too short so it bleeds a little and get the blood collection kit. I always used the blood collection kit. It's a little piece of paper with a little circle on it the size of a pea and you just take the bird's nail and cover that little circle with the blood from the nail. It costs $20 and you get the results in a week.

Don't feed mockingbirds soggy dog or cat food. You are supposed to feed them wax worms or at the very least meal worms. When they are older you can feed them grapes, cherries, or blueberries as well as wax worms. I raised three baby mockingbirds for around two months and then set them free when they were old and strong enough.

Pako Davila you'll kill it with chick starter, especially if it's medicated. They need a high protein content. You don't ever feed wild birds food made for baby chickens. Their dietary requirements are completely different.

Rachel Johnson soaked cat food. Does he have feathers and is he hopping around? If so, that’s a fledgling. Fledglings hop on the ground for a few days while they learn to fly and the parents take care of them on the ground.

Rachel Johnson is there any way you can return him to the nest? If not, there are Wildlife rehabbers in every city. He needs to be kept warm. You can go to starlingtalk.com and look up baby care. It’s mainly for baby starlings and baby sparrows but the care and diet is the same.
