@@DobermanPlanet It interesting that you said in the 70s a lot of the bad guys would get dobermans you look young but i was a kid then and it was the doberman and german shepherd then in 80s to 90s it switched that the tough guys wanted the pitbulls and now it the Cane Corso it interesting how the bad/tough guys switch the preferred dogs as the decades change.

Our new Doberman pup Odin has made the transition to Ollie and he’s thriving. Thanks for the recommendation John, this is a game changer for me; so easy to get it right and the ongoing support from Ollie is invaluable. This is our third Doberman and we have been down too many roads trying to figure the best plan for keeping our friend healthy. With our last Doberman, Loki, we spent several hours a week cooking whole chickens and turkeys creating what we thought was a perfect diet but, it was time and energy that could have been better spent enjoying the boy. So many lessons from each dog, getting better but still much to learn.

I’ve been feeding Raw for 20 years. I always highly recommend it. If you don’t want to do DIY then buy premade. Freeze dried is a good alternative, but it’s usually very expensive.

@@DobermanPlanet i’m glad I started it back then and not now. Back then it was small, basic, almost underground. A few people knew about it and there were some articles here and there and a few websites. It was so much simpler back then. I started with premade and then I did DIY and now I do a combination of both. There’s too much conflicting information out there now, too much fear mongering, too much virtue signaling. It’s actually pretty sad but if you can get through all that BS it is 100% worth it for your dogs and cats.

I'd like to explore this as an option but my biggest fear is accidentally not making it a complete diet and having my pet get sick because I didn't have enough of one vitamin or something. I'd probably feel more confident using a recipe someone else had great luck with for 20 years.

I’ll be getting my first ever Doberman either this fall or upcoming spring (it’s all going to come down to the temperament of each of the puppies as I’m searching for a service dog prospect), definitely going to be coming back to this video that happens, but for now I’m just going to soak up all the knowledge so I don’t go into creating a feeding plan for her (yes, I’m going to be choosing a female) completely blind. Need to be prepared❤

I just got a doberman puppy back at the end of June who is currently training to be an SD for my mom. This breed is SO smart but definitely be mindful when temperament testing and dont rush your decision! Out of the 8 pups I could choose from litter I picked from, only 2 were remotely suitable. Salmonella is not found in raw but in kibble. I add a great vitamin and other supplements to my human grade raw. It's taylored to each dogs needs. I feed them twice a day. They are extremely healthy. You practice the same protocols as you do when making your own food.

We'd do raw if we weren't crossing the border into the US every week. Our pups are on First Mate (from BC) Large Breed Puppy and active dog formula. High quality ingredients and high energy. Our big guy Hans (10 months @ 94 lbs) cut his own portion down to 4 cups daily from 4.5. Our female is 2.5 cups, but she's 15 months @ 75 lbs. They also get some fresh fruit and veggies from us 😊 Great info John Cheers

Good stuff! Rambo is 14wks @ 33lbs (11wks @ 20lbs). We're still using the breader Purina Tender & Crunchy Puppy Chow and will be adding some Ollie to it soon. He's getting 1.5 cups 4x a day: 6:30, 10:30, 3:30, 8:30. We're very active (1 mile walk x2, outside play, dog socialization play, and training) and he's had no gut issues. Everything is going really well and he's a great companion for our family.

@@carguy0389 pretty much. With his activity level he's eating it all. We're in and outside constantly throughout the day. If he's not napping he's active. We worked up to that food volume as his activity increased a 1/4 cup at a time. If he has a slower day I'll do one cup for meals 2&3. Small meals every 4-5 hours seem to be good for him right now.

My rottwiler dog was put down yesterday and I am now sad, it is not my original dog but my dads gf dog and I’ve lived with it since February 2020, no one knows his birthday but he is estimated 8 years old by the time I moved in, he has got to the point of old age were it would just be best if he were put down, he lived his full life and completed it, there was nothing left for him to do but move on yet I just couldn’t let go, the news was sudden and I only had 1 day to spend with him before he would go, during this time I truly realized what the dogs meant to mean and how much I loved them and it is so sad because you can have 10 dogs in your lifetime and that’s a lot of heartbreaks, I’ve seen this dog grow from a good energy older dog into an old man dog so quick and that’s why it’s just so sad to me it’s like I didn’t expect his life to be this quick, this is my first dog death. As of now I am very sad as I reflect on videos and pictures, I made sure to take some before he went, as of now I am not going to get a dog for a while but the rott has a special place in my heart and I don’t think I could get another I feel I’d be replacing the one and only og dog but as of this time I just can’t see myself getting another dog it is to emotional and I don’t want to think about having a little puppy that I go out and buy that will one day die, I still have my little dog who was always with the big dog and I will love him forever

I also recommend new large breed dog owners to look into "Knuckling". I got a Doberman pup this year and had a big learning curb with knuckling and adjusting food intake due to this.

Except one detail, this is a very informative and helpful link. Personally, we say no to Purina. Do your research guys. We have a very healthy large and agile 10 month old male European Doberman. He is in an Olympian shape. We mix kibble with Ollie. Not any kibble…..We stay away from corn, peas (peas protein), and soy products. On top of that, we have introduced him slowly to raw bones at young age, while eating them occasionally and ALWAYS with supervision

We need a good trainer, we took in a blue doberman rescue. We have a 2 and a half year old. The rescue we took in is doing good except for a few things. It takes a special trainer to know how to train dobermans. I wish you were closer.

Just got my 2nd Dobe. Zeus is now 3 yrs old and newbie is 10 weeks Old Draago. Zeus is Socialized even with a cat. ... To my question. Zeus is not aggressive towards Draago but is slobbering every were smelling the puppy. Does he need to get neutered or is it normal? I have never had an adult and Puppy as pets. 2 adults yes. Puppy and Adult never. They are both Male FYI.

Every vet definitely has his or her own style of doing different crops. A "medium show crop" to one, may look different than a "medium show crop" to the next vet.

Dobermans are not to have peas nor lentils! I've checked with 6 different vet's as well as reach saying these cause DCM ! Unless I find something from a doberman heart specialist that says differently I will stay away from peas & lentils including Ollie's. You can not get Ollie's to make food to customers order & can not talk to anyone about customization!

Ollie does a great job with customization for Doberman meal plans and can definitely choose to not get their meals that contain peas or lentils. Hopefully, you're able to find what works best for you! Just to clarify, no causes of DCM have been identified yet in Dobermans. Organizations such as the Doberman Diversity Project are pumping significant time and money into figuring out what DOES cause DCM. They know it's genetic in Dobermans (not diet-induced) but no one has identified the specific genes yet. So I think we should be careful indicating that you know a "cause" of DCM as a lot of scientists are working on that and nothing has been identified yet. Trust me, they're desperate to find that out. I think it's possible you may be confusing the FDA's grain-free food study in dogs that are prone to diet-induced DCM (which are not Dobermans). Here's a great article that could help too. There was a poll awhile back of respected Doberman owners and those involved in the Doberman world (showing, breeding, competition , etc) and Purina was the most widely used by them in terms of kibble. A lot of truly happy Doberman owners using it! 👍 Maybe give it a second look? I stay away from nestle products in general. Theres been having major issues with a lot of their stuff. Not only what happened with their dog food not too long ago which almost killed our standard poodle when that happened because she was on it. But people need to watch out for certain corporations and what they own. Dogs can handle certain things compared to humans but still when a corporation has issues with multiple of their companies. Not good.

I’ll have to agree. Most popular doesn’t mean it’s good. Purina is popular because it’s cheap. It’s cheap because it’s made with the cheapest ingredients with the cheapest processing methods. Just because you haven’t seen immediate problems, it doesn’t mean it’s not going to cause illness down the road. It’s like some people eat McDonald’s everyday and feel fine, but it will take years before they realize what it did to them.
