At one point in my life, I was extremely torn between the Doberman breed and the Boxer breed. I spent an insane amount of time researching the behavior and temperament of these two breeds before making my decision. Both Dobermans and Boxers are very impressive working dogs. However, there are some key differences between these two breeds that are very important to know. In this video, you'll learn how these breeds differ and where they're similar, including which dog you should get. We'll talk about physical differences, physical capabilities, temperamental differences, and intelligence differences. So should you get a Doberman or a Boxer? This video will help you figure out which breed is best for you!
My video on how I ALMOST got a Boxer: • WHY a Doberman?!

As most Doberman owners know all too well, not every dog product works well for this unique breed. That's why I maintain a list of the best products I've found so far for Dobermans.

I’ve owned both. This is extremely accurate from my experience. Both are great dogs and became true family members, the Doberman was more refined, the boxer was just fun loving. Both grew up as playmates with two little boys and loved those boys for 10 years. Both were protective and loyal but never aggressive.

We've had 9 boxers over the past 25 years, always 2 and often 3 at a time. Boxers routinely don't score well on intelligence tests, typically due to point deductions for not following a command. This doesn't mean they're not smart, but rather that they have a mind of their own and can be a bit stubborn, making a conscious decisions not to listen to you. We've never had an issue with this when it really counts, as they're very responsive to the emotions of their people, and when they hear importance or urgency, they quickly focus. When it comes down to problem solving and understanding language, boxers are quite clever, intuitive, and almost human-like in their interactions. They are fantastic family dogs, and have infinite patience with young children, which they adore. We are boxer bound and will never be owned by another breed.

EXACTLY. I just said some of the same things you said in your comment about the boxer, before reading yours. You aren't the only one whose noticed it in the boxer breed. Boxers are better at reading situations and owners emotions rather than learning a bunch of commands extremely fast.

I will never ever own another breed ever ! I'm the type of owner that only defends the boxer ! My past boxer was supper bright he learned over 10 commands in one setting and was service dog the. Trainer was like omg he passed every test the first time around 😀 so he became my service dog till he past 😭 and 6 years later I got another boxer and with a tail and ears like my past one , this one is stubborn but I'm really really really stubborn 😆 🤣 so I'm like hey loki mom says sit so dang gone it you better sit or ill give you my stink eye 😆 🤣 he hates that so he sits and shakes in one setting and non verbal ether I teach my dogs sign and they do it 😀 boxers are supper smart and funny and loyal and great dogs ! I say there God's Right hand dog vs other dogs are 2nd rate boxers are royal God dogs ! My boxer I have now is training to be my service dog as well and even tho he's stubborn at times when it comes to him working he behaves 😀 after all Boxers were originally breed to work 😀 I even bike with him and Rollerblade with him and speed walk and he's focus even if a cat crosses the path he looks to me for guidance and I look at him like nope keep going so he does 😀 oh and my past one and present one could run along side me as I bike with no leash so that's smarts. Both the dogs know and knew who the Alpha is and who rough houses with them and kiss them and give them big bear hugs and told them and tells them there the best breed ever and that there supper studdly handsome then I squish there face and kiss it 😆 🤣 they just will sit there letting me do this 😆 🤣 then they give me a kiss back then I wrestle them and they box me 😆 🤣

Our beloved brindle boxer is a male who will be 5 years old in a few days. I've had dogs of different breeds for most of my life. I've never had one that I understood and was easily able to communicate with like him. Hands down the best dog that i've ever had the pleasure of living with. i understand whatever he wants or needs by his vocal hints, his postures and his mannerisms. I doubt that I will ever have another breed in my lifetime.

I was walking Sammy a few days ago and a guy was walking towards us. He was about 30 feet away and said to me "If that dog comes near me, I'm going to kick its teeth down its throat." A couple of replies played out in my head "That's the worst thing you could do.", "Go ahead.....if you want to lose your foot.". I told him "This is a Doberman. Not a Poodle. If you attack him, he's not going to run away. He'll fight back." The guy gave it a second thought and chose the right option. He crossed the street. I never stopped walking and wasn't about to cater to some a-hole like him.

I was thinking the same thing. I've owned both. In terms of trainability, the Dobermans were easier. But in terms of overall intelligence, they are much closer than that 40 place separation. I've sat & watched my Boxers actually problem solve & figure things out. I currently have 3 & my female watched us opening the storm door & figured out how to stand on her hind legs & push the release for the latch by the time she was 3 months old

I'm a boxer owner - I have a female that is 2.5 years old and about 55-60 lbs and muscular/lean build - Overall I'd say this assessment is pretty accurate. She's extremely playful and a great family dog for my kids. However I would say her protective side is much higher than I expected or what this video would describe. There have been a couple instances where my dog is "not messing around" when it came to another dog or human. She was/is a very effective deterrent.
@fireandworms
@fireandworms Жыл бұрын
Keep socializing her. That's a lifelong commitment for getting a boxer, I had one that became increasingly aggressive towards other dogs, especially once she hit 8 years old. There might've been other factors, but while we socialized her properly as a puppy, we didn't keep up with that. Socialization with both dogs and people is a consistent need in order for them to have the right temperament.

I have had two boxers, the first one a female and the sweetest dog you could ever have. She loved my two young children and was quite protective of them. Growing up, my favorite childhood dog was our Dobie. So sweet! Chose a boxer once I had children because, although their personalities are very similar and both are extremely family-friendly, Dobie’s are more likely to aggressively defend their family. Boxer’s tend to make noise and get “between” their people and the perceived danger, while Dobies are more likely to “go after” the perceived danger. Children often run and chase each other while screaming, and could confuse a dog. Was worried if Dobie went after a child during confusion, I might be forced to put the dog down which would absolutely destroy me. I love both of these breeds!

My Boxer got between me and another aggressive Pitbull. Luckily both were leashed, but I was impressed that my boy immediately got in front of me and chested up while the pitbull lunged at us and left his owner unprotected. My boys instinct was to protect me first, not attack. Such a good boy.

This is a very well done comparison. Never owned (or was owned) by a Doberman, but we're on our third Boxer. We first got a male, named 'Buddy' (AKA 'Bubba') as a pup, and when he was about a year old, we got a female pup, named 'Haily' -- they were inseparable. We were absolutely in love with those two sweet dogs. Haily stole my heart. Buddy died at 10 yrs. of congestive heart failure, and it was so hard on Haily to have him gone, but she was a real trooper and live to be 13 Years. After Haily passed we were so heartbroken that we went for almost 2 years without another Boxer (we wouldn't have wanted any other breed at that point). I still get teary eyed when one of Haily's photos pops up on my computer screen. Then one day my wife came in and showed me a photo on her phone of the cutest puppy I have ever seen -- a fawn Boxer with white muzzle, white chest, and four white feet -- we picked him up from a breeder in North Texas. We named him 'BJ' ('Bubba Junior') and he shares our home with our big orange cat, 'Max'. BJ is now over 6 years old, and we are getting pretty up in years, so sadly, we know he will be our last Boxer. I would not trade all the laughter and memories we have of these dogs for all the money on earth. They have been one of God's great blessings in our lives.

Personally I have a boxer myself and can honestly say, I was never after a boxer, never even considered getting a boxer just wasn’t a breed I was interested in, I was looking for a rottie but puppies were way to expensive at the time I was looking, that’s when I stumbled on a ad on Facebook of a woman selling boxer puppies, I took one look at the puppy pictures and fell in love, needles to say I’ve had my boxer now for 10 months so he is still very much in his puppy stage but has been the best decision I’ve ever made ever since I got him he has been so Affectionate and caring towards me constantly just wanting to play I always describe him as a big goofy muscle because he is so muscular and big for his age with still a while to grow I’ve also found that training is super easy with him picking up commands almost instantly and he is so gentle arround children it’s almost like he knows the size of them human and then adjusts his manners to how he needs to be arround then he is just perfect in ever way and can confidently say I will be getting another boxer in my lifetime. I can’t comment on the Doberman as I’ve never owned or know anyone who has one but just thought I’d comment as was seeing a lot of posts about the Doberman but my boxers need some love too 😊.

Oh wow, I have both a Boxer AND a Doberman right now, and a second boxer of mine passed away last year. I agree with about half of the points made in this video, but I think it really comes down to the temperament of the boxer or dobie’s line they came from. My two boxers ARE definitely clowns, suspicious of others, and definitely able to tell me right away if I can trust someone or not. By the time they were 1 years old they grew out of the naughty puppy behavior. My older boxer had very good protection instincts but he literally never used them unless someone near me was actually a threat. My younger boxer does not have protective instincts, she’s all bark and no bite. My boxers are very sweet, and have always been okay with just relaxing with me, even at the very young puppy stage. My dobie on the other hand, he’s working line, and 10 months old currently and does not know how to relax, try as I might to teach him calming behaviors. I can tell, he tries so hard to please but is SERIOUSLY a Velcro dog and is staring into my soul as I type this, and whining at me. He has to be doing something constantly. When my boxers are exhausted, they take a break, but this Doberman does not.... he keeps going. I am dying for the day he will become “stoic” as I read the Doberman to be. Boxers are definitely clowns, very sweet, yes they’re expressive, they’re just as smart as the Doberman but in different way I think. My Doberman is smart and it gets him into trouble, my boxers are smart and I trusted them a lot faster. People in general are definitely afraid of my dobie, but just as afraid of my male boxer who was 95 lbs, and TALL, and I didn’t tell anyone he was a marshmallow. In general, for where I’m at right now I think the boxers are a better breed if you don’t want to deal with a little “viper” teeth puppy stage (bite inhibition took forever, and so did house breaking with my dobie), and a psychopath around at all times. My boxers were a lot calmer as puppies, and I could teach them a command 25 times and it was solid for life, my dobie, I tell him an infinite amount of times and he still discovers a loop hole to get around to disobeying me.

Boxers have fun loving, affectionate personalities. They are extremely loyal to their owners and one of the best family dogs. I want a companion/pet. If you need a guard dog, Doberman’s are certainly more intimidating. I must be fortunate, because I have never had a boxer that drooled, but one did blow bubbles when a savory treat was offered. I have read Boxers rank 90 out of 100 for adaptive learning with up to 40x, as in how many times it takes to learn a command, but Boxers rank super high in intuitive intelligence. Once they learn to read their person, which comes early to them, they are extremely perceptive about situations. My two pups, females, almost 1 yr and the other almost 10 months, they both exhibited guard dog behavior ( standing back from door, watching, big dog barking) at an early age. I think around 8 mnths.

I was a Boxer owner for many years and never thought I would own any other breed. Sadly my Boxer passed and I couldn't bring myself to get another as I felt I would compare then to my last one. You are spot on with your description of the boxer. My boy will be 9 in may. The first “boxer” my parents owned (before I was born) turned out to be boxer/Doberman. Seems the neighbors Doberman made his way into the yard. They loved him dearly. ✌️💕

I can see where these 2 breeds were your final choices. So similar as far build , family loving , grooming etc. while the dobie is a little more intimidating, the boxer has intimidating looks as well. Both dogs are energetic and don’t shed like a GS or aren’t as big as a mastiff. Enjoyed this comparison !

Love this video! As a lifetime boxer owner, I can be a bit biased as well. ☺️ Always loved the look and build of dobies though!! Most points you’ve made on boxers I have found very accurate. One part I wanted to speak on from your video: “Boxers- Loyal dog who focused on their owner and extremely accepting of others.” As each boxer can be different, I’ve found all 4 of ours have always shown a very protective nature, and are cautious to accept others until they receive a communicated sense with the family that the threat is safe. While in comparison, our family lab was extremely accepting of others, and knew no stranger! Love your videos and content, thanks for sharing! 🐶

Subscribed. I love most working class breeds. Grew up with Dobermans and staffies, but got into Akita rescue pretty early and stuck with the breed. Them and pittbulls. Was kinda surprised to see the comparison of these two and that's what caught my eye about your video. They may be similar in physique but as you listed, so different in personality. All the stigma that comes with a Doberman unfortunately also comes with the pittbull. Both unwarranted. Great video.

I actually never knew that you were in the same place that I was at one point in time! Boxers and Dobermans are my two favorite breeds of dog, but with my current family dynamic and lifestyle I went with the boxer. I really liked how you broke down the differences and set them all out here, and I definitely liked your choice of words when it came to using fearless for the doberman and brave for the boxer: my boxer is definitely brave, sometimes too brave, but God help him if you bring out the laundry basket or try to walk past a box or tote cart on the sidewalk...he will pull as hard as he can to get away from them regardless of the commands given...but I love the goofiness of the boxer and that's why I went with him. The doberman will be the next family member when my boxer passes (which hopefully won't be soon because he only just turned 2). Thanks again for the review!

I grew up with two dobermans and had a boxer as an adult. My take is that breed descriptions can have some degree of accuracy but like with people, they are stereotypes and dogs are also individuals. Our dobermans were both female, mother and daughter, and couldn't have had more different personalities. The mother always had her eye on you, recognized my father as her alpha, and would show teeth to me and growl at me at times. The daughter was the calmest most playful, loving, dog. The mother died of cardiomyopathy and the daughter developed severe hip dysplasia both at 10 years old. I wouldn't have dobermans in a house with children based on my experience, too easy to turn. My Boxer was high energy until 3 years old, always followed you around, loved being with people, never showed any type of aggression. I am afraid to get another one because this dog was so perfect. My Boxer was also a couch potato so again, breed descriptions are stereotypes, they always speak of a boxer needing to run outside or they will be destructive but my Boxer never chewed a thing. Counter surfed, oh yeah! He lived until almost 12 which is far longer than the average boxer life of 8 years because they tend to develop cancer or the cardiomyopathy. He was a puppy mill dog (I know better now) so the cancer wasn't bred out of him, he just didn't get it. He eventually got both dilated cardiomyopathy and hip dysplasia at eleven years old. Seems to be common in the working class. The doberman was great house protection, I think the boxer would let people in the house to play if he could, lol. I think I heard him bark five times in 12 years and it was more of a questions, woof? The Doberman that had the tough personality was by far the smartest dog I have ever met. So there you have it! Depends on the individual dog beyond broad breed descriptions. Both are great choices but I do lean towards the Boxer.

The Boxer is currently in the guard and protection group, maybe not with the same intence of the Doberman. And the bite force of the Doberman is similar at the Boxer, there is not as much difference as you mentioned. I have had both breeds and although the Boxer may seems more silly, but at serious moments it's totally a different dog. And although I do not support dog fighting, but the Boxer has more aptitudes when it comes to defending himself. I am glad that you have made this video, very interestig and entertaining. Love both breeds by the way!!! Thanks!.

When I was choosing a dog to raise with my kids I was limited by two factors. My oldest son was allergic to most dogs and because I was renting, a Doberman wasn't a possibility. After extensive research I settled on Standard Poodles. Shave them down and structurally what you have is very similar to a Doberman. They are whip smart and protective if necessary. What's amusing is that when you travel with them and tell the motel you have a poodle they have no hesitation in saying yes. Picturing a toy poodle, I'm sure. When walking the dog the next day, seeing my very large, poodle they'd point and ask "what kind of dog is that!? (my dogs were on average 26 inches and 50 to 60 lbs.) I'd smile and say "that's my poodle."

I've owned several of both through the years. They are both amazing breeds. But for me, the Boxer is my #1. I currently have 2 purebred & 1 Boxer/Dogo Aregentino mix. And it's because of exactly what you said. I just adore the goofy, puppy-like antics that they carry for so long. My Male is almost 5 years old, weighs 88 lbs & is still a big puppy with the family. I tell people that it's like sharing a house with giant toddlers who never grow up! Lol But they can also turn off that silliness in a snap if they feel that their humans are being threatened.

You should also mention as far as bite goes. a Boxer's jaw is built to bite down and hold it's opponent until their owner gets to them. Where as the way the Doberman bites is more like multiple scissor types of bites.

I agree with your summary. I haven't owned a Dobie but have known people that have and they do seem stoic, elegant and smart. We've had several boxers and well, I don't think they ever grow up. Both females that we had matured about a month before passing. But I don't think they were actually mature their health just declined rapidly and they couldn't be their goofy selves. The boys? yeah funny too. They are very expressive and loving. And that's why I love their breed. If I was looking for mainly protection, I think I would go the dobie way for the reasons you outlined.

Hey John, got a question for you. Can you do a video on the registration coding for albinism and whether or not you should breed? In the akc letter I got today, it says anything with "wz" should not be bred because they have a lineage of albinism. Is this method outdated with modern DNA testing? Should the breeding standard of the "wz tracker" change to dna test compatability instead?

I have had many many boxers in my life. I have been around Dobeys as well. Your commentary was spot on. Boxers have had their original purpose bred out of them and are a more domesticated bred. They are probably safer with kids. Very protective of them but much less dangerous. There are still breeds of them that are more European when trained are very effective in police work but for home protection I would go with a doberman.

She is my only companion and I agree with your description of their personalities. I had mini doberman before her and the size factor was an issue. I also considered actual doberman but their stoic demeanor makes me uneasy. I like that boxers are more expressive and easier to read. It makes me be 100% more confident around her than with other breeds. My brindle is a 9 year old female. I plan on having a new boxer pup to be trained as a service/emotional support dog for me. I was not in a suitable economic position to have her professionally trained for those purposes. She still manages to do a fantastic job instinctively. She means alot to me.

I've always had poodles. They're quite smart as well, super trainable, very versatile, and family oriented. They need to be groomed, but they don't shed - they will get stickers and stuff caught in their curly coat though. Definitely not protection dogs, but they have a good bark (standards anyway) and will alert when appropriate. They're also pretty good swimmers, and enjoy being active with whatever activity you or your family are doing - they can also be trained to velcro themselves to their bed / pillow while company is over, just as if they were in a crate.

My Blue Tick Hound Mix scared everyone with good reason, and he was also a ESD. He took part of my soul with him to Rainbow Bridge. When I look at a Dobie, I see him in their demeanor and their eyes. I've been around Boxers, no interest. I worked at Home Depot for a time, and a Veteran came in with a Dobie ESD, and told me about a time he was about to take his own life, and with tears in his eyes, he told me how his Dobie put her paw on his gun and lowered it to his lap. The seed was sown then in my heart, and then I saw Ruby, and the rest is history. I have always been afraid I couldn't handle one. Hi everyone. I would love for some tips and advice. I've got this incredible Dobermann female who just turned one. Ive had her since she was 4.5 months and what we have accomplished together since we became a couple is just incredible. However, when it comes to the apperance and her ears we are not doing to well. She has the longer "show crop" and I am having a lot of trouble getting them to stand up for a longer period of time. Do you think they will stand, should I just keep taping or is it time to realize they wont make it? Hearing it can take longer to get the show crop to stand, but anyone knows how long? And please, dont send me videos and tips on "how to" tape, ive seen the all and theres no issue on that. Right ears stands for 3-7 days after removing tape, left, perhaps 2-24 hours if I am lucky.. They are long however and she talks a lot with her ears so the fall back sometimes. Any supplements perhaps? Lots of love and thank you all for your help

I need them for guarding mainly (it’s important for me) ,also good with kids, and can be okay with me working 12 hours a day and me being lazy sometimes on the daily exercise part with an average yard having to do for some days (i know, but i don’t have enough energy at the moment and i really have to work long hours) any advice from previous owners ?

A big question I keep on trying to answer to myself is how to slowly transition into keeping my Doberman (1 and a half years old) to staying out of the craft full time. I am only gone for an hour at a time which he is in the crate for. When I tried leaving him in an enclosed space for the first time he lost his mind and became very destructive. What is a good way to make this transition for him to be comfortable out of his crate.

I have only had Boxers in my life and I honestly could not be more thankful or imagine having any other breed in my heart.
