Bingeing-on whatever your choice of drug is-is simply the malnutrition of your emotional needs. -Helene Philipson, TedXPeterborough Now THAT is something I HAVEN’T heard before. And I’m so appreciative.

YES! Oh my, what a talk! This “On the outside I got bigger and bigger, but on the inside I got smallet and smaller” was so on point and “I was struggling to find my place in life, and killing my self in the process” gave me goosebumps. Absolutely one of the best TedTalks. Thank you so much for bringing light to this topic. I’ve had disordered eating for awhile and only in the past year became aware of how much of it was attributed to emotions I was unaware of. I often say we are all addicts, because we are all using something, whether it’s drugs, eating, or lashing out on people, to cope with our stress. Hopefully more talks like this can help us realize that’s the reason we are falling into those bad habits. I love your message, please keep sharing and we will see change in the way our society views weight and addictions

Oh my goodness… Ms. Phillipsen… THANK YOU! I cannot begin to express how much this has resonated with me and helped me put words to what I’m going through. I appreciate your willingness to be vulnerable and share your story so that we can all learn and improve our circumstances. “Emotional malnutrition” - YES.

What was the problem that made food my solution? As a child my dad used to beat up my mom. He was so occupied with his stuff and his anger that whatever my brother and I thought - we weren't allowed to speak in fear of getting beaten up. My mom was busy at work and busy at home trying to survive and let us kids survive. We never had money for anything - except food. I used to have a very unhealthy relationship with food and I guess I've always been an emotional eater. However I only started to become obese once I got 26. I lost all the weight at 29 years old only to gain all the 30kg again... and just like the woman in the video I had to notice that it wasn't about the food at all. I know exactly how to diet and how to lose much weight. It's just that willpower isn't enough. I'm still struggling, I still have no solution and I still haven't learned to cope with my emotions. Also struggling fibancially, having ended up in a difficult relationship/marriage and being a full time working teacher doesn't help I guess.
