38:26 "When you grow up you feel less joy" This is setting up for Inside Out 3, where Joy has gone off the grid to live as a hermit in Riley's adult years and the gang has to go on a quest to find her and pull her out of retirement, à la The Force Awakens. Because, just like the commercial success of Disney Star Wars, there's no way this isn't getting a sequel.

@@randomcat7246 honestly, i'm really glad for that, because inside out 2 pulled on my heartstrings so hard, emotions overwhelmed my enjoyment of the movie and so i couldn't even begin to think about the actual plot without being biased because of how the movie connected me with anxiety

I’m also neurodivergent and loved this movie for the most part but I have one huge gripe with it- how quickly Riley recovers from the panic attack. Panic attacks are brutal and the effects will wrack you for the rest of the day if not more, sucking all the breath and life out of you. They way she just picks herself back up cheapens the actual lingering horrifying experience of a panic attack
@Confetti_onkers3 күн бұрын
@wisconsinwintergreen6296 Honestly you're right, the panic attack was oddly short, but that can happen. Feeling bad for the rest of the day though is definitely something that should've been added, it felt kind of fake in a way. Nobody noticed Riley as well, and that really gave me a weird feeling.

As someone who, as as a child watched Inside Out REPEADEDLY I can confirm Inside Out 2 did not suck as much as any of the other modern sequels did. I was genuinely worried that it would be like Frozen 2 in the sense that stuff would be forcefully written into a world that was long finished.

OK honestly Joy saying "you feel less joy as you grow up" does represent her in the process of understanding the true message of "as you grow up happiness is something you seek out not a constant state of mind" so it isn't wrong for the line to be put there. The rest of the arc just could have been developed better
@CarrieTooTired2 күн бұрын
it's not a bad line if it was in the middle of the movie, but they had it right before the climax where your character is supposed to learn the thing that changes them 👀 in the first one, it's when joy learns abt sadness' importance, but here she's saying that you feel less joy which doesn't help anything in terms of stopping anxiety's panic attack it may not be the film's final message but the script structure is highlighting it as one
@randomcat52622 күн бұрын
@@CarrieTooTired I agree the placement isn't the best (in fact, I think the line should have been in the first film actually). But it, for me at least, isn't portrayed as the final message. That is "we don't get to choose who Riley is" said during the panic attack scene. There is a further realization by Joy of some kind, that is.

Music can be used to influence emotions if done right. It's why so many people say that if you listen to depressing music then your gonna feel depressed. But if a movie adds so much music that is supposed to make you feel something. If can often feel forceful and feel fake. I am no psychology major but i know that people are smart enough to know when they are being told how to feel. Good video tho

35:15 ish While I do think a scene where the Firehawks and Riley’s friends reassure her would have been incredibly moving and powerful, I also think it would’ve been a little strange. Keep in mind that they are all _teenage_ girls - they might struggle with Anxiety as well, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they know how to properly deal with it, or even know how to comfort someone having an anxiety attack
@HellfireComms4 күн бұрын
Exactly, they're not adults. This was, sadly, an experience Riley had to deal with on her own this time.
@TabbysDolls3 күн бұрын
The thing is... They didn't do anything at all. From what I remember they didn't show much sign of concern. And did not stop the game to go get the coach/an adult for help.
@ImTooOldForThisNonsense3 күн бұрын
@@TabbysDolls Considering that the coach is stern and strict to the point of collecting everyone's phones, I'm pretty sure the coach would've just told Riley to "get it together." And even without that, Riley is now at an age where she's developing independence to the point of going on trips away from her parents - so showing Riley handle the panic attack on her own is in line with her character. (Plus, I once had a panic attack that lasted throughout an entire high school exam, and nobody noticed or cared. So Riley having to deal with panic attacks on her own resonates with me.)
@TabbysDolls2 күн бұрын
@@ImTooOldForThisNonsense oh yea, I totally get that(and I'm sorry you had to go through that), also Riley didn't handle all of it by herself, it was mostly taken care of but her friends helped her recover from it a bit.(even though, like stated in the video, I think it would've helped if her friends apologized too)
@NA-jz6nv2 күн бұрын
True, but even just having one of them purposely get sat out so they could just sit next to her and offer a hand would've worked. Maybe it's just me but if I saw someone was having a emotional moment and didn't know how to handle it nor believed I could get help from someone else, I'd at least showcase solidarity and that I care. Having a moment of one of her friend(s) awkwardly trying to help would show that they still care for her would've been sweet and better than just her being fully alone in that moment I think

35:40 i feel like by the first movies rules this should have been a core memory moment, but if it had been then...shed have learnt something kind of bad for her wellbeing in the long run from it. Like, her first panic attack, the culmination of the real shake-up of her understanding of friendship, her first moment seeking out her own emotions to choose how she wants to live her life, yet a core memory of it would have left her feeling certain that like her own pain isnt as important to anyone else as their deserved apologies. And...yeah, people exost who have learned that lesson from even one pivotal moment in their life that stuck with them, and either had a hard time unlearning it later, or suffered the rest of their life. Within the world of the movie were supposed to think that everyone is a good person and her friends are good friends etc but Inside Out and now its sequel are a lot of kids first introduction to these sprts of ideas and not going to be good if any of them take that on board as well, that if they have an experience like that theyre just supposed to suck it up after and act like they didnt just go through something awful

A nitpick I had was that Envy didn't really seem to have much benefit. Anxiety helps to plan, Ennui and Embarrassment help to regulate social behaviour but I found it unclear what Envy does to help. You could make the argument that Envy helps Riley to aspire to do more but Anxiety is the one who really pushes for that anyway.
@ImTooOldForThisNonsense2 күн бұрын
I saw Envy as a way of trying new experiences as a way of both bonding with friends, and the desire to reach for the life that you want. For example, "I want the excellent results that my best friends get!" "I want that necklace so I can fit in!" "I want to go to that rock concert so that my cool friends will still like me!" "I want to keep up with every trending video on KZbin so that I can talk about something cool with my friends!" Something like that.

Like that's the only thing you feel through the entire movie. Which, okay they're making a movie that is /literally/ about anxiety, so it makes sense to make the audience feel anxiety, but it just made it really unpleasant to watch... there were just no breaks or breathers from it, it was a physically painful watch and not enjoyable at all. For a kids movie that seems pretty hardcore.

My biggest and most fundamental problem with Inside out 2 is anxiety. Inside out is supposed to be researched by a group of psychologists and psychiatrists for the creation of it. And that is seen clearly at the first. But in the second one. Is terrible how basically they scratched up all what they had presented about Riley mind functioning. This has the porpoise of as they said to "re invent" the concept. But my biggest problem is not that, but how they did not consulted any professional for the inclusion of anxiety as an "emotion" in inside our 2. Anxiety for the first most is not an emotion. Fear is an emotion. But anxiety, is described as a deproportioned response to fear, which then evolved into mental illness. Anxiety is a pathology. Fear is a natural reaction that keeps you alive. The survival instinct. If for example someone breaks into your home at night. You feel at first, a rush of fear, adrenaline, perhaps panic. But that will keep you moving and surviving. Without fear you would not even survive much. Not even as a child. Small children seem to always have the necessity to place themselves in mortal danger because they do not have fear of the stove, fire, an open window ten floors below. Is with their parents that learn that a hand in the stove burns you. A fire can cause a bigger fire that can harm. A fall of ten floors below will kill you. Is fear that keeps you alive fundamentally. Anxiety is feeling that fear, and panic response without any stimulation that would merit feeling it. If you have panic attacks. Suddenly you can react the same way you would react when been at your home in a fire. Or be chased by a lion or been about to be railed over by a trailer. That panic that is triggered by literally, anything at all. Or without any stimulus. For some is going out to buy groceries and is the so tremendous, and despeoportionate panic response. That is an example of what is anxiety. And anxiety is one of the most, harmful and vast formation of mental disorders. See to PTSD and OCD for example. Desrealization and despersonalization, agoraphobia-You can name the whole chapter of the DSM V that are disorders caused by anxiety or co related to it. Anxiety is not something that as is portrayed at the movie you can place aside in a chair. Or that is "Good" And only wants the best for you. I think that inside out 2 can actually be quite harmful for adolescents and parents of children. Which if their child or themselves as children are experimenting anxiety. Instead of starting to go with psychiatric and psychological help, they would try themselves for control it. Is the same as trying to "really mean" to cure yourself from diabetes or cancer or schizophrenia for example. Anxiety is a mental disorder. That needs attention as soon as possible, because as soon as is attended and recognized. The pronostica of the treatment will be better. Is one of the most debilitating mental disorders, and is because of how harmful and quickly can evolve. Is not of stigma to recognize that anxiety is a real mental disorder. And that is need of having care and attention, and never judge. Ir would be as judging someone for having an illness that is organic. Anxiety is not an emotion! And of course not to the pathological extent is portrayed. Is something that does angry me, because Pixar does has a responsibility of creating a movie about well, the mins. As has a tremendous influence in the audience. And is directed to the whole family. I would rather said it angers me how they did not had any care in the creation of the movie. In inside one 1. They had that responsibility in seriousness. Exposing that all emotions are good. Reprehending them and bottling them up. Of judging them as bad, is harmful. As happened with Sadness and Joy. But if recognizing them and giving them all their place. Of the support that is needed for all, and Riley experiencing essentially depression. But in the support of her parents. Overcoming it (After Riley escapes and returns) It does has that responsibility in a clear mind. But inside 2. I believe it can be very harmful.

I mostly agree with your criticisms, but I feel like Riley's public panic attack needs to be mentioned. I once had a panic attack that lasted throughout my entire high school exam in Year 12, and nobody in the classroom saw or cared - teachers or students. I had to handle the circumstances on my own. As for the movie itself, Riley is now at an age where she's developing independence to the point of going on trips away from her parents. While she's anxious, she's now at a stage in her life where she's independent and is expected to do more on her own rather than still have adult/parental guidance. So Riley having to experience panic attacks the same way I did, especially at a much younger age, is both personally resonating to me, and in line with her character.

Inside Out 2 honestly made me appreciate how tightly-written the first one was. Yeah it has a few hiccoughs but I sincerely believe that Inside Out 1 had no wasted scene. The sequel on the other hand, while faster paced just feels like events happening at you. Like you said, the character progression was kinda hampered in this movie, and yeah I thought the new soundtrack was generic just like you did. Pretty disappointing sequel in my opinion.

Honestly, I didn't even notice the music score when watching this movie, so the soundtrack doesn't really bother me.

I never really heard the soundtrack in the environment I watched this film in, but I still thought it was one of Pixar's better sequels. I went into this movie with really low expectations. Pixar's history of pumping out sequels for money has made some really mediocre movies at best, and terrible movies at worst (*Ahem Cars 2*). I'd have to rewatch it alone to hear the soundtrack, but I honestly thought the movie was good and had a strong emotional connection. I didn't have a ton of anxiety as a teen though, maybe like 1 or 2 panic attacks total in all those years of my life (which I felt the movie portrayed quite well) but my experience isn't really strong enough to say whether or not the resolution of the film was appropriate other than I liked where the characters ended up.

It failed because people didn't know to hate like how can a film exist with a villain and only gave an antagonist.

@@Hannah-w1p are you sure about that? She literally said that during her junior year she experienced frequent panic attacks. You clearly didn’t watch the whole video. This is also why you don’t make assumptions. If you’re looking for the timestamp, she talks about it at 26:20.

Biased. I am biased. I has issues with inside out 1. BUT OMG, SO MUCH ABOUT THIS MOVIE BOTHERED ME. ANXIETY???? NOT AN EMOTION? THE OG THING IT WAS BASED ON, THE STUDY, WASNT USED IN PT2??? LOOK YOU CAN LIKE IT BUT DAMN I CANT GET OVER IT

i'm going to be honest as much as i love the representation of depression the first film gives i love this film 100% more the first one isn't terrible at all i just find the film ok all the way threw especially cause i don't care about bingbong and a lot of the set peices they go threw just didn't feel unnessicary to the story i get it's world building for how brain functions in this universe but i just find a lot of the first film padding
