Our excitement to be in Singapore is hard to describe. We've wanted to travel to this region for years, but haven't been able to make it happen. In Singapore, we start by exploring Chinatown, visiting the Singapore City Gallery, and then falling asleep. The next day, we head to the Muslim Quarters (Kampong Glam), briefly visit little India, and then Heather learns an important lesson on Satay street - to always let Bill try the food first to see if it's spicy.

Welcome to Singapore! It's nice to see in foreigners perspective and do hope you enjoy your stay here. There's 1 interesting features in each temple you have visited; Thian Hock Keng temple is built without using any nails, and the circle ring below the golden domes are actually bottom of the glass bottles arranged into a neat pattern. When the mosque is being built, poor Muslim families does not have the capability to fork out money to build the mosque. Instead, they donate these glass bottles, a symbolism that no matter if you're poor or rich, you have a part in building the mosque. It's unfortunate that you missed out Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, Sri Mariamman Temple, which is located very near to Chinatown.

The red sauce is not specifically for satay. Satay sauce is the peanut sauce. The other should be for the other food that you ordered

Most tourists coming to Singapore seems to only know Tian Tian chicken rice but as a local Singaporean, I can tell you there are much better ones

@@shellamuchtar3661 I think that one is Ah Tai chicken rice. The chef used to work for Tian Tian. I don't eat Tian Tian any more. First they don't give soup. Second chilli too spicy. B1-35 stall at Golden Mile food centre is my favourite .Just something special about it .

As a Singaporean, I can totally agree with Ben. Tian Tian is just overrated and for that price it is considered rather pricey. In that very hawker centre, there are a lot more chicken rice stalls. I frequently patronise Tong Fong Fatt Chicken Rice instead.

Where doesn't have parks in walking distance? ( genuine question) I grew up in the UK on the south coast then moved to London. I have lived in Melbourne ( that's Australia ) for decades, but also have lovec in Ireland and New Zealand. I can't imagine living anywhere that had no parks to walk to. How awful!

@@triarb5790 i have to explain further, from a singaporean perspective, and something that Heather & Bill didn't mention, all our parks are connected islandwide. It is literally called Park Connector Network. you can start a journey from the east and walked to the west with very little vehicular traffic to reach the destination. of course, logistically, it will be impossible for there to be to no instances where there wont be vehicles, it is at least minimized. safe for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

There are 2 versions of egg tarts available in Singapore. The one that you had at Lau Pa Sat is the traditionally cantonese version, which many grew up eating. The portuguese version arrived here in the 1990s and is available if you know where to find it.

basically egg tarts has two variants. The Cantonese Hong Kong egg tarts with cookie base or layered pastry and the other is the Portuguese tart with the caramelised top. Of cos there are many different varieties too. Like soy bean tart, pandan tart, durian tarts. Quite a few popular Hong Kong egg tarts popping up in SG. There's a very popular Hong Kong dim sum place called Legendary Hong Kong Restaurant in Jurong Point shopping centre. Very nice and authentic HK dim sum. Their decor and surrounding shops let you feel a bit of the HK Street vibe...but is to the western side of SG.

@@darg0014 I have no idea which is the original. All I know is that growing up here during the 60s & 70s, the cantonese egg tart was a regular feature of the dim sum menu at chinese restaurants here. The portuguese version was a major hit here when I returned briefly from N America in the 1990s, I remember the snaking queues. Personally I have never been a fan of either version.

Try the Singapore zoo, CapitaSpring Sky Garden at 51st floor (I think it is free), Gardens by the Bay. For food - try Singapore Chilli Crab (Jumbo Restaurant at Riverside Point) and for the rest, try everything at hawker centres like Maxwell hawker, Hong Lim hawker (Chinatown MRT). It was interesting that you guys checked out the gallery at URA building - those couples you saw there, they're mostly having a look at the development plans in various vicinities because they're looking to buy a home! Not sure if you're still in Singapore but if you want to learn about the history of Singapore then the National Museum is where you should go! There's a permanent exhibition there which is quite comprehensive and I've been there twice myself. Thian Hock Kheng temple was for the Hokkien immigrants from Fujian province in South China. It was run by the Hokkien clan and it was common in those days for these clans to set up schools to improve education and literacy (public schools were not a thing for the masses). A few of my aunts who are now in their 70s used to study elementary school within the temple compounds many decades ago. They used to live in the shophouses in the area up until the 80s/90s when those properties were either torn down or taken back for urban development.

So nice to see you all enjoying yourselves with the sights, sound and tastes. Food is a national pasttme and there are many food which are ss the locals say "die die must try". Normally the satay sauce is mostly grounded peanuts and is a bit sweet. But some vendors use quite a bit of chilli oil (you can see them floating on top in your vids). The trick is to stir the sauce so that you get more of the peanut sauce than the chilli sauce. Yes the chilli oil on its own is quite shocking to the taste on its own. Satay is one of the best loved food around. Enjoy..............

The Portuguese colonized Macau, China - that’s where the egg tarts come from in Chinese culture and why you find them in Singapore. Also, if you go to Macau, the architecture and streets look just like Lisbon. There are even Portuguese speaking Chinese people and Portuguese expats living there still.

FYI, Portugal was the first European country to land in Southeast Asia (in Melaka, not too far from Singapore) and they brought with them not only some Portuguese dishes but also New World crops such as peanuts and chilies.

We live that place. We're going back in Feb 2023. Sentosa beach us nice. Gardens by the bay at night needs insect repellent. Food us incredible. People are so nice. Plenty of affordable places to stay and eat. Changi airport and the Jewel need a whole day to explore.

Heather, if you try the cendol drink (coconut drink with pandan flavoured green strips), watermelon, whole coconut water that will bring down the acidity/internal heat-any existing inflammation from spicy, BBQ, fried foods, balancing the yin (alkaline) and Yang ( acidic) of foods. Its very much interesting to see singapore from a tourist point of view. Singapore is such a small place you could probably explore all of it within a couple of days. To challenge your spicy taste buds, you guys should try chili crab or black pepper crab, to go with local spicy spinach and rice. There are countless of free monuments along merlion park. Sentosa is good place to visit, so is also japanese gardens. Most tourists who come to Singapore enjoy these fun and tranquil places, and the view is really worth it from the top of CE LA VI, Marina Bay Sands. Have fun and enjoy your time in Asia. Wonder whats next on the iternary = > Bali ?

Yes, Bali is awesome just a 2.5 hour flight from Singapore to Bali, I was just there a month ago. 2 Days in Bali won't cut it though you need atleast 5 to 7 days to explore most of what Bali's gotta offer, n there will be lots of walking. Wear some Good sneakers 😉 everywhere. Bali you have to try roast pork, babi guling and try local Indonesian cuisine. You got to plan like a day each to explore each side of Bali. Many friendly local drivers to bring you safely to tourist spots, if you need a recommendation, awanprasetya driver from Kuta Bali, 082236606374 here you go. Must see spots as a couple, Kintamini Mountains, look out for those fluffy mountain dogs only found there n fresh fruits with an amazing view of an active volcano and lake. Sunset Dinner by the beach at Jimbaran, Monkey forest and local art culture scene in Ubud, if you're up for it you can even get a Balinese palm reading. The rice terraces at Alas Harum are amazing n you can try the extreme swing there in the forest. Natural and secret waterfalls. Lembuyang Gates of Heaven Temple in east of Bali, along with virgin beach is fun n tranquil. Divers head out to north of Bali for some amazing scuba n snorkeling adventures, if you're lucky you can see lava trickling down the mountains at night. There are plenty of beach clubs to wind down n chill in Bali especially in Changgu, gotta visit Finn's or Potatoe Head. Both provide different atmosphere, party vs more cozy quiet music by the beach. But seriously if you're in South East Asia, you should check out Bali Indonesia as well as Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and Cambodia. All amazing n cheap tourist destinations. You should definitely go to Singapore Zoo, River Safari, and Night Safari. I honestly can say unless you went to a Safari zoo, no zoo is as well landscape than the Singapore zoo. Every world conservationist marvel at how the zoo is landscaped. And yes you should try as much local hawker center food as you can. It is the only time you will have in all of Asia. Don't need to eat at fancy restaurant or hotels. There are lots of review what to eat. And don't forget Chilli Crab and taste of Durian and many other local fruits such as rambutan, mangosteen, sour sop etc. Have fun from Wisconsin.

Don't know if you're still in Singapore, but I recommend the pandan chiffon cake at Bengawan Solo. It's a cake shop you can find in different locations, including Changi airport. So good.

Also Sambal Sting ray! best of all is to mix all the races and culture food and eat it in one go! also consider going to the heartlands like Bishan / Ang Mio Kio ( Red Line on the MRT ) for food and to see a slightly slower side to SG! very local area.

The Portuguese explorers were the first Europeans to land in Malacca, only about 2.5 hours drive by the highway from Singapore into peninsula Malaysia. Many Malaysians and Singaporeans have Portuguese surnames eg Pereira, de la Flor, de Silva and etc. The Portuguese not only introduce egg tarts but also curry puffs eg empanadas here. Many Malay volcabularies are of Portuguese origin eg bandara, Delilah, meja, almari, gereja. In Malacca, 3 to 4 generations ago they were still speaking the Portuguese language of medieval time.

Visit Malacca in Malaysia if you have the time. It is a UNESCO heritage city. The Portuguese, Dutch and British were there. Visit the Portuguese settlement in Malacca and try Malacca Portuguese cuisine. I had been to Portugal and Madeira. The Portuguese cuisine here is different.

The 'green sauce' is a chilli dip for your seafood and not the satay. Satays (and any accompanying vegetables like cucumbers and onions) are best dipped into the peanut sauce instead .. Glad you had a great time on your trip though ..

Local here. You ate the satay with the wrong sauces! The prawn dipping sauce was the green and the spicy chili combo sauce. The Satay sauce was the peanut sauce alone to be eaten with the raw onions and cucumber to temper the sweet tartness and salty mix. The wife has a good palate, she was right on the Rice in the Chicken rice had ginger, garlic, pandan(regional plant leaf for smells), salt, vegetable oil. The Portuguese egg tart you had was brought over by them decades ago and its a spin on the original recipes with the local talent/tastes. Singapore is a food haven and Melting pot. As with all food, they are calibrated for local palates to sell better for profits. Wise choice that you took the week here instead of just 2 days. As you will be travelling 11 timezones and missing out on the food jewels just a step away after thousands of miles of travel. Hope you get a local foodie friend to bring you around on your next trip!

Nice video and welcome to Singapore! Fun fact: That "batman building" Parkview Square, has a top ranking bar called Atlas Bar and I think a free art museum too. Oh I don't recall the satay stick without the sauce has any spice in it hmmm. I feel bad but it's hilarious to see someone who cannot take a bit of of spice vs another LOL. To most of us the peanut sauce with the satay tastes mostly towards the sweeter side, spice is just minimal.

Could always just eat the satay without the peanut sauce. The meats are quite flavourful as they are, and some sauces tend to be oily. But the best way to eat it is with the sauce, maybe just dip a tiny bit and not dunk the meat into the sauce.
