That's right, it's our final day in Singapore! We had so much more we planned to do, but we ran out of time. It's always good to have more to do when visiting somewhere! We briefly stop by the National Museum of Singapore before heading to a hawker center for one final chicken rice! 😭
Then we visit our main site for the day - Haw Par Villa. We had heard this place was different, so we felt mentally prepared, and yet we were still visually overwhelmed by everything we saw. Wow! Plus Hell is there - who knew?!? The colors of everything in this Asian theme park are vibrant and dynamic, and everything is well signed.
And in the evening, we felt absolutely lucky to get reservations at Artichoke. Look, it's not Malaysian food - but we heard about it from one of our favorite TV shows and had to try this "least authentic middle eastern restaurant" in Singapore.

Some history about the place. When the two brothers were young, they were very poor and couldn't play in the parks as the parks then are only for the white colony masters. When they made it, they decided to build the Haw Par Villa parks for everyone regardless of race or wealth. They built two, one in Singapore and one in Hong Kong. Their translated given names are actually Tiger and Leopard ( Haw & Par ) and their cars in the 30s were moulded with at tiger and a leopard. Colourful characters they were.

Quite a shame you didn't visit the Hell museum, it's the most iconic/ main attraction of Haw Par Villa. Most of us Singaporean were brought there as a class trip when we were young, and been traumatized since then 😂

A pity you guys didnt go to the Hell exhibit! IMHO thats the best part of the park, and for tourists it's an eye opener into the religious beliefs of the chinese and their interpretation of the afterlife! I think you guys would appreciate it most out of all the other travel vloggers! perhaps next time you guys come again you can plan a visit! fun fact: the Ten Levels of Hell in Haw Par Villa is also said to be one of the known portals to the nether world in Singapore... So stick to the opening hours! fun fact 2: You mentioned that the chicken is served cold/room temperature in singapore. This is only for Hainanese Chicken Rice, as there is a specific cooking step where after the chicken is fully cooked (emphasis on the fully cooked part), to keep the moisture and tenderness in the meat they blanch the chicken in ice water to prevent overcooking of the meat. this cools the meat down to room temperature, and also causes the fat under the skin to gelatinize giving it this unique jelly like bits under the skin that you cant get from other cooking methods. So to put to ease anyone who was alarmed by the room temperature chicken, it is fully cooked and safe to eat!

Nice to see that you guys took up my suggestion to visit Haw Par Villa, glad that you liked it!!! It's really weird place for foreigners, with dioramas & strange creatures and wondering what's the background stories. It's really a bummer to miss out Hell, as there are LOTS of even strange statues and dioramas in it and shows the consequences of you after death where your sins are being judged by the King Of Hell Yama. Legend says that these dioramas come alive during the night and the "Gate of Hell" opens their door when clock struck 12am during our Chinese Hungry Ghost Festival, so people will always avoid that place. The door of Singapore will always opens to both of you and hopefully you'll visit us soon! Safe travel and continue showing your tales!

Hi 30 years ago when Singapore was simpler this place was a very popular attraction. Every weekend it was super packed with many Singaporeans bringing their children riding the boat through the hell and other things I forgot. I have not been there for almost 30 years.

If you come to Singapore a second time, you would have to visit the Hell part, that’s the MAIN part of Haw Par Villa, although I visited it once as a child and haven’t been there again though because it was honestly *really traumatising* as a young kid. But I wouldn’t mind going there again, as long as it’s not during the Chinese 7th month and it is during the day (I’m a superstitious scaredy-cat, but there have been stories!!!!!!) Your video was recommended to me so I just clicked on it and did not expect to watch all the way through your Singapore playlist in one sitting, it was so entertaining (my KZbin was set to 1.5x speed and it was just right for your videos!!) and definitely made my day, and I was having a couple of very bad days, so thank you very much😌

Oh if you are worried, you could go to a Taoist temple right after you visit “hell” (which is based on the Taoist religion), in fact, there’s a special Taoist temple in Singapore with a Taoist deity that can only be found here (normally you can find temples in Taiwan and China with the same deity e.g. Guanyin, but not this deity) The story (long story short) was that during WW2 there was a group of Japanese soldiers stealing things from the villagers in a small village here, and one of the villagers suddenly got into a trance-like state and then, started speaking perfect Japanese to the soldiers which was bonkers because none of the villagers knew Japanese! Originally, there were three "Haw Par Villas" in the world - the other two are in Hong Kong and Fujian, China. In Fujian, the garden was never built. In Hong Kong, the garden was destroyed but the Mansion was preserved. In Singapore, it's the other way round. The mansion was destroyed but the garden was preserved. Notwithstanding, you are right in that there isn't anything like it in the world today.

Haw is actually pronounced as 'Hor' and not 'How'. Good video and glad you enjoyed your visit to Singapore. Haven't been to this park in a very long time. You could just walk into the tunnel where the Hell exhibits were previously. I would avoid it every time I visited. I found it really terrifying for me as a child and even as an adult. I'm glad it's covered it up now so it's a good excuse to avoid it altogether if visiting. 😊

It is not just chicken stock. U need to stir fry the washed rice with ginger and shallots (optional) with chicken fat. Chicken fat is the key ingredient. Thereafter add chicken stock to steam in rice cooker.

Meanwhile, enjoy Bali!

Some years ago, Haw Paw Villa was revamped to be like a theme park with boat ride and a gigantic dragon mouth as the entrance. I was invited once to attend a talk by a devoted Christian speaker. He made derogatory remarks about people going to the park and compared it to entering the mouth of the devil

Ugh, we both feel there's a place in the world for all religions. Not all christians feel that way! That said, if I was entering a giant dragon mouth, I would probably feel like I was walking into hell - but it would also be kind of neat. 😂😂

I walked away from the talk wondering if he served justice. Anyway, someone related to him replied to my comments saying I written nonsense. But I remember it well.

The Chinese mythology of Hell is different from the Christian concepts. It is a place of judgement and it is neither good or bad but a karmatic rewards awaits those entering the gates. The story is to learn and correct mistakes and obtain virtues of life. Unfortunately, interpretations by right wings religious missionary group over the centuries that have no concepts or wanting to know of native cultures have over write and superceeded a lot of cultural beliefs and replaced with anglo-saxon beliefs which most parts are not even religious but a fear of the unknown and a need to create a bogeyman. After all, it is so easy to blame the devil for everything than to look and improve on oneself. We tend to give more credit to the Devil than he deserved.

There used to be a boat ride through the many levels of Hell.. I remember being super creeped out by the gory figures they had in there, as a child. Oh, and enjoy Bali. My family and I used to head there for our annual March holidays (the kids get a break from school for a week) but Covid put an end to that. It's great for relaxation. My husband likes to sign up for a day of mountain biking and he always has a great time! The people are friendly, the food is great and there's many interesting temples to visit.

We love biking as a way to see places when we travel. We have biking adventures planned! And I need to look up this boat at Haw Par Villa. A number of people have mentioned it used to be there!

@@TalesFromOurPocket They may have taken it out to make the boat ride bit as walkable instead. The boat ride existed when I visited as a child. The last time I visited was in my teens when my cousins visited Singapore from NZ and they even had something like a log flume ride. I suspect most of these do not exist anymore.

But unfortunately you guys didnt visit hell so viewers cant see what hell is (because its expensive), and can only can imagine it Hahahaha The depiction of hell in HPV is really scary, blood curdling and will deter anyone from committing evil and make him a good person in this life. It will scare the hell out of anyone lol. Should have paid hell a visit, or paid to visit hell when you can......... .... Even if Singapore is expensive as hell to some.
