Feisty Baby Seal Rescued

When it comes to “survival of the fittest”, we have high hopes for this baby seal. With a few 'ferocious' barks, he was ready to fight us off. With such strength and determination, he still would not have made it with such an entanglement on him. Now that it has been removed, we don’t think there’s anything that will stop him from growing to become a big seal bull one day.

After Naude said “You are a nice strong specimen” that little growler calmed down. “As long as you know it..” he seemed to say “..I’ll just give you dirty looks while you save my life”. It is sad, yet perfectly normal, in colonies of tens of thousands of pinnipeds to see dead bodies lying on the beach. Natural causes like predation, starvation, and sickness prevent half the Cape fur seal pups from seeing year one. Older animals are also subject to diseases and injuries.

Get them young and train them, "Do not pick up trash in the ocean or team OCN will find you and they WILL release you!" But you should try to avoid NEEDING release so you can join the crowd who watch the team at work. Much less scary that way!

Do the seals ever get injured from the stampede?

We would not be using these tactics if some animals were indeed getting crushed to death or even injured in the stampede. From a very young age, Cape fur seal pups are tough enough to handle adults walking - sometimes charging - over them. We do not perform any rescues from November to January when the newborns are indeed too small to swim or to handle the older, bigger fur seals running over them.
