Oh Felix - that trick is so neat! How ingenious, and very well taught - I've just tried it and it really works so well - and my main blade locked safe and securely because I have the Evogrip S54 that has that locking feature, the main reason I bought the knife for! Another tip for my Playlist! 😃 Thank you so much - *Hugs* Wendi

Great video! Always found it hard making these "feather sticks" like the experts did, pushing the blade along the wood. I just thought it was because I was inexperienced or my knife is dull or the wrong type. But after watching this video and trying it myself it was so easy! Thanks

You have made it in to a work of art. Old Gypsies used to make them very carefully all around a stick so they looked like a chrysanthemum flower then sell them as decoration. Mine never come out that good but at least they work. Wonderful advice, thank you.

The serrated blade on the Swiss Soldier's Knife also makes some great curls. I brace the wood and I use the Soldier's knife at a 45-degree angle like a draw knife. The serrations make quick work of making a lot of curls because it makes many fine curls with each stroke. It's become my go-to knife for fire prep and mostly everything else.

Hey Felix. This is common sense at work. Eliminate the variables, use one action. I used to cut lacing from a leather or rawhide disc with this method. The knife is set into the stump and the lace is pulled. Takes a super sharp blade, a steady hand and a lot of practice, but like your feather stick the end result is perfect. Thank you for another informative video. Bravo.

This idea is a good one for not just using a Swiss Army Knife if you happen not to have one. Placing the cutting edge at an angle is the best part of this idea to make sure you do. Now, I just hope I remember this the next time I make a fire stick. 😂🤔

Many thanks for such an interesting video! I was aware of the other methods but yours is simplicity itself! I can see the knife has to be very sharp...I understand the weather has been very hot & dry in Europe, is it very dry in Switzerland and can you still build a fire? I noticed you appear to have sprained your wrist, hope it is better...I enjoyed how you did the video in the forest(soothing) with an ant as an assistant & the birds & the cowbell as background "music"...great! thanks again!! This actually got me thinking... What if instead of feather stick you use the victorinox saw to scrape wood and make wood dust. Does this work? I mean it would probably burn up way too fast but maybe it's a noob friendly way to go from tiny to small fire? Like you could put a base of wood dust on the base and have some smaller wood chunks lying in them. then keep adding?

Easiest way to learn to feather stick is with a Mora. A SAK is a fine secondary tool. The key is a razor sharp Scandi grind blade. And bone white STRAIGHT wood grain. But once one masters the Mora & that almost piston like fluid shave moving over to a classic size or Ranger size SAK should present no problem whatsoever

Excellent tips! I've been making feathersticks for many years and have never gotten the hang of getting those super fine curls like some can get. Maybe it's just old age catching up to me. As your video demonstrates, I have found that securing the knife as you have, allows one much more control in the feathering process. Great job and thanks for posting! As an aside, I'll have to try putting the knife tip at a 45 angle as I usually just put the tip in the log at a 90 and have at it. ;-)

For what reason should anyone make Lockenstöckchen other than showing of how sharp his or her knife is? ^^ just pick up needle sized dead dry branches and keep your knife razor sharp.
