Here's my take as I have both burrs in the Ode 2: Imagine a Thanksgiving Dinner: SSP will further differentiate individual flavors and separate them as served one item at a time each on a separate plate with a sip of water in between each dinner item. The Ode 2 standard burr will put all of those on a single plate.

I think refining my technique will probably yield better results than changing my burrs out again. The Gen 2 are a fantastic choice! Honing your brewing skills and understanding of what impact different variables like water temp, water quality, flow rate, grind size, thermal mass, etc. will greatly improve your coffee… but that’s also really nerdy stuff that some find daunting, myself included. There are some great resources out there like Jonathon Gagne’s book The Physics of Filter Coffee that go pretty deep in that topic. But if your getting good coffee you’re already happy with, that’s half the battle! Happy brewing 😊☕️🤘

As long as your coffee is tasting the way you like then you’re good! There’s no right or wrong, grind size is based on personal preference. Grind finer and finer until the coffee starts to taste bad to you then back the grind off a little. Also your water quality and brew method plays a role so you should consider those variables as well.

Hi, just got the FO2 and I'm really happy with the consistent grind. Just figuring out the dial setting now, for a natural and light roast it seems that I have to go coarser not to get a muddy slurry in my V60 (I use 18 grams for 320gram of water). With Moccamaster I do get a really nice cup on setting 4 and 2 bars (500 gram of water). Would you recommend to go courser for the V60 to get a better slurry and less draw down time (now about 4 minutes which is quite long)? Thanks!
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
Hi, congratulations on getting a Gen 2! I would recommend going courser if you feel your brews are over extracted. If you’re getting cups of coffee you like at those settings then I wouldn’t change anything. Even though they are helpful data points to understand what’s going on with your brew, flavor is the most important over brew time or the look of your coffee bed. But again if the brew time is long and you feel the cup is over extracted then yes I do recommend going courser and trying again! 😊 ☕️🤘

Hey guys! I got my Ode gen 2 for a month now and have been really happy with the taste profile. It has a rich fuller body when it’s hot but it gets thinner as the temperature cools down. Whenever I’m drinking Yiragcheffe which is more tea like and fruity, I tend to let it cool off a little in order to experience it brighter. Here’s my question: does the SSP give you the tea like profile right away while it’s hot with its acidity? If that’s the case does it get super acidic once the coffee really cool down? Can you say Gen 2 burrs get super close to the SSP burrs once they are both get cool down? Finally, I have been thinking it lately whether if it’s a waste of money to buy another Ode Gen 2 with the SSP burrs pre-installed. But then again, I can always buy a set of SSP burrs to have it installed myself, then I think about cumbersome job about the alignment and potentially wasting a great set of Gen 2 burrs once the SSP burrs is installed. The Gen 2 burrs set is pretty much useless then, but however if I chose to buy another Ode Gen 2 grinder with the SSP burrs pre-installed then of course I will have two grinders that can do two different styles of coffee without having to swap the burrs set back and worth as the grinder isn’t designed for users to do that unlike the Niche Duo which users can easily and effortlessly swap burrs between espresso or filter burrs. What do you think guys? Is it stupid to buy another grinder machine with SSP burrs in it or just buy the set and install it yourself? Thanks! If I do I get another Ode Gen 2 grinder, I will chose the white variant with SSP which symbolizes brighter and high clarity profiles as I already have the black variant Ode Gen 2 with the stock burrs that has the warmer and cloudy profiles.

You can do turbo style shots but the ode won’t get much finer than that with the gen 2 burrs which is what’s stock in them now. If you have upgraded burrs they will grind fine enough espresso if you have them calibrated too but the motor in the Ode is a little weak for espresso grinding, that’s why Fellow doesn’t recommend it 😜

Have you had experience with an 804 Sweet? Would an Ode with SSP MP give me noticeably different pour-over coffee compared to same coffee from my 804 Sweet? I am seeking it as a different option, so I would not want it if it overlaps much. I assume since an 804 Sweet is driving middle notes and balanced cups, the SSP MP would give noticeably thinner and cleaner coffee, in which case it would be a compliment option for me. Thoughts?

I had SSP Casts in an Ode which are supposed to be comparable to the Lab Sweet and the MP has much more clarity and you are correct the body is thinner. I would say it’s a good compliment to the Sweet, a nice contrast.

What were your grind settings looking like with the Gen 2 Ode with SSP?

It depends on a lot of factors, the roast level and density of the coffee, the dose amount, and the brewing method. But for a general 15gm dose pour over brewed in the V60 with a medium/light roast I’d say somewhere between 5-7. You just have to experiment and see what gets you the results your happy with 😝

If I remember correctly we were on setting 5 with the SSP MP and they're setup just off chirp at setting 1. I just ordered and received my Ode Gen 2 with SSP burrs pre-installed - the grind distribution is visually much tighter than it was on my old Kinu Phoenix (which I've had since 2019) and while I'm still working through learning all the tricks of this new setup, I have made some cups of coffee with it that really outshined my best efforts with the Kinu. My question though is how to be sure that the correct SSP burrs were actually installed in this grinder? The box it was shipped in touts the 64mm Gen 2 burr set and I initially just assumed that there is only one shipping box, but it's been eating at me a little. Do I need to actually open up the grinder to check? Did anyone else who has ordered the Gen 2 with SSPs pre-installed also have theirs come in a box that is labeled with the 64mm burrs?
@coffeenerdaaron2 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question, I think the only way to know for sure we be to open it up and take a look, or look down into the hopper where it enters the grind chamber with a flashlight and see if you see the gold of the SSP burrs.
@carsonpoltorack91772 жыл бұрын
@@coffeenerdaaron I opened it up and did see the gold SSP burr set! While I was in there I took the opportunity to zero the burrs as well. Interestingly they were not zero-ed when shipped, I didn't pay too close attention but it was around 3-5 clicks from zero - this isn't what I was expecting at all because I already was having difficulty with longer drawdowns than expected at their recommended grind size for filter, and now the recommended numeric setting represents an even finer grind than before after zeroing. With the newer machine and the a large amount of grams do you think being at a 7 or an 8 is extremely too high? what number do you think it would be best at without me losing coffee.
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! My first question would be are you happy with the taste of the coffee? That is the most important vs what number your dial is at. The grind setting chart under the lid is not very accurate especially with the upgraded SSP burrs. I would not reference that as a guide to where you should be grinding. I’ve made some 15gm single cup brews ground at 8 on the SSP burrs in and Ode, so it really depends on a lot of factors, the dose amount, the roast level, the density of the coffee, the brewer, etc. I wouldn’t focus too much or worry about the grind setting, focus on the feedback you get from the cup, the taste is going to tell you everything that’s important. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions, and thanks for watching! 😊

I guess it depends on you and your preferences. If by average you mean someone who buys bulk or commodity coffee at a grocery store (which there is nothing wrong with that if you like it) then I would say no. Upgrading things like grinders and burrs really starts to unlock and express a coffee flavor characteristics in a different or more interesting way, but if your not really drinking coffees with interesting flavor notes then it probably won’t make much difference. I don’t think it will make your coffee worse, I’m sure it will be better, but it’s not going to be a crazy improvement or impact your coffees taste like it will with a coffee that already has uniquely inherent flavor notes.
