Just wanted to say thank you for doing this comparison. We really tried to get the "sweet spot" of the Gen 2 burrs to be around 3-5 to address the feedback of the Gen 1 burrs not being able to grind fine enough, and watching this video just kind of brings it home that we did a solid job!

As the guy that requested this comparison, thanks. This was informative, and very weird how one 11 came last and one 11 in the middle.
@AlternativeBrewing Жыл бұрын
You bet! Thanks so much for suggesting it. SHOUT OUT TO YOU @meatgeorge 👍 Looking back, I'd say, the SSP has very high clarity, and no doubt a far greater uniformity of grind distribution. So the SSP at 11, is a true representation of the extraction at the 11 setting, whereas the ODE, more likely has more fines involved in the cup, that are giving it some ooomph in flavour. And imagine fines being represented as a % of grounds that are smaller than the setting you're on, not necessarily a specific micron size ... this would lead the setting of 11 using ODE burrs to give me fines somewhere, let's say in the vicinity of perhaps the 5 settings (theoretically speaking) .. this might impact the extraction and show up in the cup. If I recall correctly, there was one particular bowl that had a very unique flavour note in it, that none of the other bowls had -and I promoted it up the order bc of this, as well as it having all other good attributes. I cannot recall which bowl that was, but it might have been the 11 Ode.

Always nice to see a “budget” version of something performing as well or better than high reputation/expensive version. Granted, I’m sure performance will vary when actually ground for a specific brew method, i.e. Aeropress, V60, Orea, French Press or whatever. It’d be fun to run the same experiment using several different brew methods. But that’d be a super deep rabbit hole!

Great video! I had very similar results comparing the SSP and Ode G2 burrs in terms of flavor profile and my preference when I did my comparison video. I prefer the Ode G2 burrs most of the time vs the SSP and the Gorilla Gear burrs. For the money they're hard to beat!
@AlternativeBrewing Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! 100% for the money I was shocked ! The SSp has very good clarity, I think I was a little leaning towards a cup that had a bit of everything - so good sweetness, acidity, some clarity - but also body, texture and finish. What stopped the 2 SSP cups from being the best was this BODY & FINISH, and equally, the last three cups being SSP just dropped off the pallet very quickly , versus the ODEs in the middle that still had enough body to carry some lingering flavour 👌

I have been unhappy with my pour overs since upgrading from my Kitchenaide burr grinder to the Ode Gen 2. First off .. thank you for the excellent video here but also just in general. You’re starting to become my go to channel for coffee equipment information. The effort you put into the testing for these machines and the clear, detailed analysis you provide - I genuinely appreciate it 😊 Keeping that in mind .. I was hoping to hear your thoughts on a purchase dilemma I’m facing right now. I can get the DF64 here in Canada right now, and get a FREE add on of the SSP MP burrs 😮 It’s an AMAZING deal. I really wanna get it because of the value itself, but I’m a little confused after watching this video and your Varia VS3 ones. I’m now thinking maybe get two grinders instead of the one stop shop DF64 : Ode Gen 2 for filter and VS3 for espresso and the occasional filter. The price difference for the two grinder setup would be around $200 more i think but I don’t mind that in the grand scheme of things. What are your thoughts? Have you played around with the DF64 With SSP MPs ? Do you like the espresso and filter it produces ? How would you compare it to the VS3 for espresso ? What about workflow ? Id love to hear your thoughts! Cheers man !
@AlternativeBrewing Жыл бұрын
Ooooh! 😂 If you had just ended the question with " the DF64 With SSP MPs ? Do you like the espresso and filter it produces ? How would you compare it to the VS3 for espresso ? Without mentioning Workflow - I would say the DF64 with SSP Burrs, will ultimately produce a better tasting coffee, filter or Espresso - after you get the feel for the burrs - and the sweet spot for both methods. HOWEVER - you mentioned workflow - and for this - I just don't think you can go wrong having separate Grinders for brewing methods. Dialling in and grind adjustment - I find, when jumping back and forth with Filter and espresso - especially espresso - there's always a greater chance of being off the ideal grind setting. When I dial in a bag of coffee, I accept there's a dose or two I may waste due to dialling in - but once dialled in, the Grind setting I have rarely changes much - if at all, and I'm consistently brewing the dialled in coffee. Versus, if not, then you'll be wasting a dose or two more here and there still throughout the bag, and that's not cool. This goes for Filter too. So neither the Varia VS3 or the Fellow Ode could individually beat the DF64 with SSP, but I think - as a combo on the brew bar- collectively they do 👌.

Hi! Great review. A couple of coffee nerds started discussing if doing a cupping to evaluate a grind profile makes sense. Basically some people say that with inmersion brewing the grinder makes little to no difference as the coffee will be extracted to the same level after some time. Obviously you did notice differences but whats your opinion on it ? Thanks !
@AlternativeBrewingАй бұрын
Thanks - it would only be my assumptions on an extraction theory I haven't really tested fully - but I would say, given different burr produce different quantities of fines / boulders and mids - and as each of these sizes extracts at a different rate - so will the overall bowl. So, - as each grinder has, not only a different mix of these grind sizes, but grinds specific geometries of these grinds, this also plays a role in the extraction rate. Ghost burrs for example - if you've ever seen grounds from these - you'll notice they're weirdly close to being geometrically symmetrical - although they also produce quite a large portion of fines as the trade-off to this. Get rid of the fines and you have some incredibly consistent extractions. So, I would say, no doubt there are other and perhaps better ways to compare - and I'm open to testing these out - let me know what you think may produce clearer results - that even cupping is a great way to compare different burr - Hope that sheds some light on this 😀

what a great and extensive video. Nevertheless you spoke about the settings 3,5 7,9 and. Would you say the setting 5 on Gen2 is similar to the 5 on the ssp? I would assume the ssp needs to be set coarser. How much coarser? So maybe the 4 on the ssp would come near to the taste of your Ode 3 setting.
@AlternativeBrewing Жыл бұрын
yeah that's about right 👌 The SSP 5 was a little back from the Gen2 #5 setting, and yes you could almost match a coarser SSP grind with the finer Gen2 grind. however - trial and error is the way to go with this - and the coffee you are using. You could do your own experiment with 2-4 different grind settings and the beans you have - and see which setting works best 👌

so you would say 5 on ssp is like 4.1 on Gen 2? @@AlternativeBrewing

Installing them is very straightforward to do this part. It's not, when it comes to calibrating them though, but follows an easy step-by-step process to align them correctly. Then once done, I made sure each burr was touch on 0, and went from there.

I loved the Cast Lab Sweet over any other burr - that's personal preferences - though I was very pleased also with the Ode Gen2 burrs. SSP are great - but between the HU and the MP, you really need to be either espresso brewing (HU) or Filter brewing only (MP)... and still the differences are in clarity of flavour - at the expense of body and texture (mainly MP) and I find an easier time dialling in a great brew with the aforementioned burrs - CS Lab Sweet & Ode Gen 2 👌

But bought it, with the mind to Change burrs If necessary. The ode gen 1 now is about 200€ the gen 2 burrs 90€ SSP burrs 200€ and the gen 2 is about 350€. So it was worth the risk for me to buy other burrs later but so it is an fair prised start in Filter coffee. Before i tried pour over with my Eureka Atom 75, timemore C3 and 1Z presso J max.
