OMG! Your video just saved my Ode 1 grinder. A few months ago, mine got jammed with beans and I was unable to grind. I took it apart but was unable to remove all the parts, the auger was jammed in, and I could not get it out. I threw the machine out in the garage and left it. Until I watched your video, which inspired me to give it another try, and I’m glad I did. However, I had a hell of a time getting my auger out of the machine, using pliers and a screwdriver. I finally got the auger out, I then did what you mentioned in this video and sanded the shaft lightly and I also sanded the inside of the auger. Put it all back together now I’m back in business grinding coffee, almost sold it for parts…thanks.

Hats off to you folks at Fellow! I just ordered the V2 burr set and this video is very clear and concise. I am anxious to get the new burrs and confident I can install them properly because of this video. I am impressed that this company is committed to their product and customers and is offering this new burr set for a reasonable price. The original Ode is still a great grinder, but you keep making it better and allow older models to benefit from the new burr design without having to buy a whole new grinder. I wish more companies were like Fellow.

Thanks, Nick, and thanks Fellows meda team for making this video. The steps are super easy to follow and work right along side the video. Swap and calibration went smoothly without a hitch. I also have to note that going through the steps allowed me to appreciate how much thoughtful design went into the mechanical engineering and assembler ergonomics of the machine itself. So many little details that really go a long ways to prevent errors. So much design in preventing the escape of fines. I'm an early kickstarter backer, and have been happily grinding several times daily since I received it. I've never cleaned the grinder and it's remarkable how clean the grinder is compared to my past grinders. Fines stay within the grind chamber and there is BARELY any residuals to clean. Thanks for all the great work you all do! 🙏👍😊

Just finished installing mine! Super easy. Some tips I would suggest are to use a dental pick or something similar (toothpick, eyeglass screwdriver, point of scissors, etc) to clean out the screw heads. Some grinds were caked on mine and I almost stripped the screw until I cleaned it out with this. Also, the inside of the auger, I used a Q tip to loosen the grinds. I used a hairdryer on the cool setting to blow out the grinds. If you are having trouble getting the fixed burr out, use some else (I used my brush) to rotate it a few times to loosen it before using your hands.

Hah yeah i used an x-acto knife to clean the screws, and I wrapped a paper towel around a chop stick to clean the inside of the augur. Getting the angle for sandpapering and getting the inner burr out was a bit tedious but the process wasnt so bad.

As great as this video is, there's a couple of parts that are still confusing: For one, he specifies "centering" the burr when screwing it back in... this is super meticulous and I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong. Like, I align it with the screw holes and screw it in, that should be good enough but my OCD is not happy with that Secondly, the calibration. He says to turn it until it "chirps", then take it one click back. Thing is, mine starts to make a very subtle chirp/click one click before the loud chirp like in the video. So if I follow these instructions based on noise, that means that my grinder set at 1 will make a very subtle click/chirping noise, and I'm not sure if that's normal or I need to take it one more click

Just finished my install. Easy enough. Only a few issues, my auger was missing a burr screw oddly enough. I don't think it ever had it as there was no damage to the gen 1 Burr's. Also during calibration, mine didn't quite make the sound yours made, I heard them touch barely, then one more step and the made a squeeky noise.went back three steps from there to be safe. First grind at 3-4 was very uniform and the aeropress was very flavorful. Very informative video and I'll stick with your brand for a long while.

Thanks so much for the video! Very thorough and clear. I did have to break up my caked-up grinds with a toothpick before my airblow gun could get it. Put on goggles before you using an auto detailing airblower on your grinder's internals, because coffee grinds in the eyes REALLY stings. ...I say, as COMPLETE conjecture, because this is definitely not a rookie mistake I would have made personally. Nope, definitely not at all speaking from experience there. Just looking out for y'all, is all. *shifty eyes* When calibrating my burrs, there was a pretty noticeable rattling sound coming from the auger shaft. This is how I discovered that, after a lot of hard use, the auger key develops rotational directionality. My key actually has visible wear on the torque-receiving ends. So if after burr installation, you find your Ode is just a little noisier than it used to be, try flipping the auger key around. It didn't impact my grind quality (at least that I noticed), but it definitely sounds better one way than the other.

The plastic plate that holds the knob on will not seat properly and seems to be getting pushed out by some part of the "geared" piece inside, but I can't see what's happening in there once I put the plate in place. It feels like the auger is sticking out too far, but I have calibrated it as instructed.

I'm running into the same issue. EDIT: I made it work! TLDR; go back a few steps and check your auger key's alignment. Details: I essentially started from scratch. I pulled the large screws out and reexamined the auger. The auger key itself was not sitting within the slot, which was messing with my calibration. I moved the auger around a bit to make that alignment / slot perfect, and the key sat cleaning / flush within it. From there, I put the big screws back on, and I was amazed at how far OPEN my grind dial had been. It was chirping maybe 10-12 full wheel cranks before it should have, because of that auger key misalignment (and as a result, burr misalignment). Go to the chirp, step back, stop, make sure your dial cover is at 1 (not 11). From there, the cover sat really cleanly on top, and when screwing it in tightly I could still turn the dial like normal. The only other thing I'll suggest is this video, which points out the plastic impression within dial cover. That could be another issue you're running into: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYXKfaCvjK1jrMk

Hey Nick, I just wanted to follow up post-burr installation. BTW, the new burrs are great! I have subscribed to the Fellow Drops program. At the moment, they're offering grind sizes for the V1 burr set, as well as SSP burrs. I'm wondering if you have a specific offset in mind, in terms of clicks, that I could apply to the Fellow Drop recipes, based on whatever the V1 burr setting is?
@nickterzulli89122 жыл бұрын
If we recommend a V1 burr setting, I would start by adding 3 to it. So if Ode V1 burrs are a 2, I would start at a 5. For SSP burrs calibrated 5 clicks off of chirp, I would add 1 to the recommended setting.
@mcignatz2 жыл бұрын
@@nickterzulli8912 Thank you for that info, Nick, and hats off to you and the rest of the design team! The new burrs are insanely good! And for anyone with V1 burrs who think that adjustment number Nick has cited for the new burrs is big, I can attest to the fact that the V2s grind muuuuch finer.

Hey Nick! I'm curious if you or anyone at Fellow has a standardized adjustment/translation for setting the dial on an Ode with V2 burrs so it grinds at the same micron size as a Comandante C-40 at most any given Comandante click number (barring espresso grinding). Asking because apart from the Fellow Drop videos, most recipes that I see online are giving the grind setting only for the C-40 and I'd love to be able to get my Ode close to what's being asked for vis-a-vis the C-40. I did have a question related to installation but of the ssp burrs. I installed the gen 2 burrs but also just picked up and installed ssp mb burrs. Both installations are similar except for the calibration step. Why are ssp burrs 5 clicks from chirp and gen 2 1 click?
@nickterzulli89122 жыл бұрын
The SSP MP burrs require more torque to grind at lower settings than the Gen 2 burrs. If you calibrate the SSP MP burrs 1 click off chirp and try and grind very lightly roasted coffee that fine, Ode can rock, shake, and potentially jam. This is why we recommend calibrating the SSP MP burs 5 clicks off of chirp. It will guarantee smooth operation of them in Ode. With the Gen 2 burrs, they were designed so that grinding 1 click off of burr touch will be no problem for Ode's motor. Hope this helps.

@@nickterzulli8912 why does it literally on the website when you buy say “preinstalled” if it’s not
@nickterzulli89122 жыл бұрын
@@joeygrimes8891 We offer 2 types of burrs preinstalled. The first is the original, standard burrs (named V1.1) and the second are the SSP MP red speed burrs. The Gen 2 are brand new, and we have not started selling Odes with them preinstalled yet.

@@nickterzulli8912 I am so confused by you saying “you offer two types preinstalled but the second ones are not yet sold preinstalled.” Which is it? Are the red speed burs preinstalled ?
@nickterzulli89122 жыл бұрын
@@joeygrimes8891 On our site, you can choose which burrs you want. Either the originals we released 2 years ago, or the SSP MP burrs. Only those can currently be chosen to be preinstalled. The Gen 2 burrs are brand new and are only available to purchase as an accessory. The “standard brew burrs” are not the Gen 2 in this video.

Pleased to advise that recalibrating the Ode 2 was easier than I expected. The only comment I make is, respect to the "small" phillips, be sure that it is a well made one so that you don't accidentally strip the little screws as they come from the factory very very tight.

I've got to know where to find that vacuum! what is it?
@charlesflynn48502 жыл бұрын
Nick should be able to confirm what the air duster is, but to me, except for the number of lines of text below the logo, it appears to be identical to the Svinkal Air Duster, Amazon ASIN B098LQ3F8Y. I could use it to clean radiators before the start of the heating season. A vacuum cleaner cannot quite do the job. I just installed the Gen 2 burrs, and was surprised at how much bitterness is simply gone from the brew. The upgrade is definitely worth it. One faceplate screw fell on the floor, bounced, and disappeared. It has to be here somewhere. I was amused by the fact that the written installation instructions have 39 steps. I have not seen the Hitchcock film of that name.

I just love buying a 400$ grinder and sanding it. This should not get a requirement for maintenance

I loved my Fellow Ode first generation grinder, so I made the terrible mistake of attempting to upgrade it with the second generation burrs. My first attempt at removing the auger was a smooth one. The auger came out very easily without me having to pull it out with plierss/sand the chamber. However, for whatever reason that I still can't understand, the calibration did not go as smoothly and the side if the auger key that goes into the auger got slightly damaged (cosmetic, not structurally, as customer service assured me when I contacted them). After contacting customer support, I was told to effectively pull out the auger, clean out the chamber again, re-insert the auger and the auger key, and try to calibrate the new burrs. With great difficulty, I was able to successfully pull out the auger and clean/sand the chamber. I contacted customer support again asking for clarification about a step they had recommended re: the calibration (which, the customer support agent indicated was for a SSP burr and not the gen 2). Didn’t hear back so, so resumed my attempt after two days of waiting. I followed their advice. Needless to say, the calibration was unsuccessful. I just pulled the dial out to discover that the auger and the auger key were had become unaligned during calibration. I simply don’t know what to do any more. I understand that everyone else seems to have had a great experience upgrading. I’m glad for them, and hope that you too, dear reader, will have a wonderfully easy time upgrading. But I think it’s worth sharing all our experiences-the good and the bad.

I'm sure it'll be obvious when I perform this procedure myself, however... fyi, one cannot see the auger key when you hold it up against that big ol hipstah beard of yours. In the next scene you're already putting it down to your left. Oh well... Looks like the thing pops right out when you depress the auger?

I followed every direction and everything is definitely not okay. It’s spitting out bits of silver everywhere.
@nickterzulli89122 жыл бұрын
Something went wrong during your install. Metal bits come out when the auger is not making contact with the internal spring, which means your dial bearing is recessed. The auger spins against the back of the dial plate and causes scraping. Please make sure that 1) the spring is still installed in the shaft, and 2) the auger key fully seats as you reinstall the dial. If both of these are good, all you need to do is calibrate the grinder. After that, run coffee through it to clean out the shards. The surface that gets damaged when this happens does not impact grinder function at all; so you will be good to go once calibrated.

What a miserable nightmare this turned into!😡 There are TWO sets of 4 screws accessible on the very first step (under the faceplate). One set of 4 is very prominent and the 2nd set of 4 is recessed. I didn't even notice the recessed screws and removed the prominent ones . OFF COURSE, where the wrongs ones and created a HUGE problem as I tried to figure out the mess in front of me. Of course, I was now randomly dismantling things and I got sticky lubricant goo all over my hands, tools and work space (creating a big problem for the rest of the process). WHY couldn't Nick simply make it clear that one needed to remove the (less obvious) recessed screws instead of expecting people to be able to read his mind?

I really like to small form factor of the ode. But if the users have to potentially wrestle a plier with the augur / augur key, and still need the users to SAND PAPER the augur shaft... OMG... This is really a terrible design in an engineering standpoint and UI/UX perspective. So sorry to say this
