Great video. You did a great job describing spot lights. These lights are also known as ellipsoidal or Leko lights. Their ultra sharp focus and 4 cutting blades are great for cinematic lighting. You can shine a bright light on a very specific area or object. They also project a long distance for wide shots. A note about beam angle. The companies sell different lens barrels with different beam angles. The truth is that a single barrel can do all of the beam angles. The barrel casting has different slots cast inside for where you place the lens pair. The closer to the front, the narrower the beam. The closer the light element the wider the beam. You can change the beam angle if you want by disassembling the barrel. You have to remove some philips or hex head screws and the two halves of the barrel come apart. Do this over a soft surface in case the glass lenses fall out. I recently bought a pair of Altman ellipsoidal theater lights and that is how it works for this light. I don't see Aputure or Godox making different aluminum castings for each beam angle.

I just got the Godox 36 degree spotlight attachment. The cutters are really hard to move at first. I thought I was going to have to return it but after a few minutes I was finally able to get a full open circle. The cutters are made of metal and they rest right on top of each other so there's a lot of friction you have to combat against. I also had some difficulty sliding the gobo inside. Again--a tight fit. If you can deal with some minor frustration, the Godox produces a wonderful light beam. I used it with a GVM-branded 300W light without issue.

Here’s a tip. Got the Godox spot Mount on sale at B&H with 36 degree and iris on sale as well. With a little cutting of the formed foam in the bag, got rid of the lens bag, kept the lens attached to the unit, I could then attach a small profile led light to the back of the unit and it all fits perfectly in the godox bag. Just pull out the light and you are ready to go. And there’s room for batteries and other accessories Something the Aputure case cannot do. The Godox works great.

I have the Godox Spotlight and when I mount an Aputure light on the Godox Spotlight, the Aputure light mounts at a slight angle since the Bowens mount pins for the Godox are in a different position than the Aputure Bowens mount pins. Thank you for the comparison, I think it's the only video that does it on KZbin. I have a question about the light's max output compatibilty, Godox mentions that it can only support lights up to 300w while Aputure claims their 600D still works on the Aputure Spotlight. My question is do you really think the Godox only supports up to 300w lights? I mean, perhaps they are just being overly cautious. I am asking because the Godox's light quality is way better than Aputure's but the light max wattage compatibility is also a strong point for the Aputure. I hope this makes sense for you.
@FellowFilmmaker Жыл бұрын
I have not been able to test this or get that info from Godox, so sadly I can't say for sure. Wish I could be more help as I too would like to know. My guess is you might be able to use the Godox with 600w if you were not to max it out?

I love this video! You are amazing! Thank you for explaining this! I was just left with one question. It has to do with the difference between the 26° and the 36°. Are there any cons or pros of choosing one over the other? If the 36° is a bigger spotlight, then wouldn’t it be best to get the bigger one and then control it with the iris? Do I risk a sharp edge if I get to 36° instead of the 26°? From your video, 4:25 it seems the higher the degrees the more powerful the light needs to be in order to get sharp circles

Unfortunately, the godox spotlight mount is not compatible with the amaran 300c. Those 3 bowens mounting pins are slightly longer than the usual pins (for example, on a standard reflector) and the spotlight mount simply does not fit completely into the 300c housing.

Hi, great video! One question. Couldn't I just buy the 36° version and then the iris modifier to decrease the spotlight size, to get to the same size as the 19°?

It decreases the power output dramatically

Thanks for the review! Do you happen to know if the Godox unit works with the Nanlite series, like the 300Bii, 500Bii and 720B? I'd love to get one unit that I can use for both Nanlite and Aputure units...

I was wondering if the gobos from nanlite projector would work on these godox vsa spotlight kits, since theyre both circular? I think the godox gobos are quite limited and hoping for more designs

Hey. Great vid as always! Easy to follow but full of great info. Can I ask, what do you make of this tip from Daniel Brockett at Digital Photo Pro when deciding between 19, 26 and 36 degrees? "The 36-degree Spotlight Mount throws the largest image circle of the three lenses available. Instead of shelling out an additional $500 to acquire the 26-degree and 19-degree lenses, I purchased the Spotlight Mount Iris for $99. This allows me to simply crop the largest 36-degree beam output to whatever size I need if I need a smaller pattern than the 36-degree lens can provide. The internal cutters on the Spotlight Mount provide you with a considerable degree of flexibility and control that until you’ve experienced it, you can’t imagine how precise it lets you be with controlling your light."

A good thought in the comment for sure. It's what I had in mind when I grabbed the 36 from aputure. I've heard from Aputure, I believe, that the 36 is wider yes, but also has the most issues with quality (aberration, distortion, etc.) The other benefit that I can imagine to having the different lenses would be with the strength of the light. Typically the tighter the beam the brighter it will be. So the tip is good in the sense if you just want to control the beam size over any distance. If you want to factor light pollution/distortion or brightness into it, then those might be reasons to consider other lens sizes. Most folks go with the 26 because it's right in the middle. I like it alot myself. :D Hope that helps and makes sense. And if I happened to be wrong on something, well I apologize, but this is what I know at this time.

Thanks for the video! So if I were to use a spotlight mount with a third party light, the only option would be the Godox with a bowens adapter, corect?
@FellowFilmmaker Жыл бұрын
That is correct
@ridni23882 жыл бұрын
It's all good.. However you shouldn't compare the light quality of two units with different lenses on... I personally bought the aputure 26 degrees for the simple reason that the 36 degrees has distortion... I assume the same is true with godox, no wonder why they sent you a 26 and not a 36 degrees version...

The LED's on the Aputure LS series jut out more. It's the same reason the Nanlite Fresnel modifers work on Godox VL series lights but not Aputure LS.
@FellowFilmmaker2 жыл бұрын
It's part of the issue, but not the complete issue. The Aputure spotlight mount does not have a mixing lens like Godox has in the unit, so it's a totally different outcome
