I'm sorry for your loss. It's unfortunate that we have many people that are tempted to steal, whatever their reasons. I suggest you put the cash register at that other end of the counter hopefully making it less assesable. That was way too easy for the thief steal.

In Latin America stores are covered with iron bars for extra protection. Sometimes the store owner asks what you want from behind bars, then you say what you want and give the money. They owner brings your stuff with the change.

Nanaimo has gone down hill for sure spent time there in the summer and its full of crime and unhoused people dirty and run-down buildings everywhere..so shocking from what i remember back as a kid in the 90s...
