0:00 Introduction: Female bladder leakage solved in 3 steps
0:20 The underlying cause of a leaky bladder
3:20 The best remedies for a leaky bladder
6:50 How to get started on keto and IF
In this video, we’re going to talk about the potential underlying causes of an overactive or leaky bladder.
Many medications used for bladder issues are anticholinergic. This means they block a particular neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine affects the pelvic floor and the mechanisms that allow you to contract and relax your bladder.
The system that controls the contraction and relaxation of muscles is called the autonomic nervous system. So the drugs used for a leaky bladder directly affect the autonomic nervous system.
Oftentimes, a leaky bladder is labeled as idiopathic, meaning the cause is unknown. However, in many “idiopathic” cases, the underlying cause is really insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance is a condition that causes high insulin levels, which leads to alterations in your autonomic nervous system.
When this situation happens, it can lead to issues with the muscle at the bottom of your pelvis, called the detrusor, and cause a leaky bladder.
Other things that can contribute to a leaky bladder include:
• Age
• Pregnancy
• Childbirth
• Constipation
• Asthma
• Obesity
• Tea/coffee
• Alcohol
• Chocolate
• Stress
The best remedies for a leaky bladder are:
1. Healthy Keto and intermittent fasting to address insulin resistance
2. Strengthen your pelvis floor muscles with Kegel exercises
3. Use natural herbal remedies
• Crataeva nirvana stem bark (Varuna)
• Horsetail
• Lindera aggregata

Kegel can make it worse. I did them for years not knowing. But old fashion squats really do help. I started a squat challenge about 6 years ago and found my problem fixed by 90 percent. I was already low carb, which had helped a lot. But the squats took it to a much better level.

I am in my late 40s going through menopause and noticed this condition a little but I have cured it by accident. I did a 48 hour fast for food poisoning recovery and breaking my fast with fermented foods probiotics and continues with leafy green vegetables with very little protein for 3 more days, no carbs/sugar of any kinds … it’s no longer a issue for me now, Dr berg is always on point with health issues, my family is definitely benefiting from your work and watching your videos everyday, THANK YOU 🙏

That's fantastic. Glad to hear it worked. But in case you were unaware of it, you DID have carbs because you said you ate leafy green vegetables. What helped me was the opposite. I ate a high animal fat keto diet with the normal amount of protein from red meat, eggs, chicken and a couple other animal sources. I usually make homemade kefir but had to buy a store brand, but it was plain (no added sugars or fruit) and still worked as a great probiotic.

Just so you're aware, leafy greens have such a minimal amount of carbs that it's not worth mentioning. You can eat a couple pounds of leafy greens a day and still never go out of ketosis. In fact kale and other leafy greens are so low in carbs it's the only thing that won't break a fast bc fiber is the main componant. @pat4005

Low Vitamin D also contributes to both female and male urinary incontinence. My mother-in-law upped her D levels with supplementation and no longer wears Depends. She noticed a marked improvement within a week of starting 10,000 IU of Vitamin D3. There is peer-reviewed research to support this observation as well.

All is better now as long as I am on point. Now I follow Dr Berg's IF/Healthy Keto. Eat 2x a day at noon-1pm and between 5-6pm. Zero snacking. I've been having bladder leakage after first childbirth and got worse gradually with second and third then with menopause. I excercise and pills with no improvements. I started healthy keto and intermittent fasting 5 months ago. Not only I lost 30 pounds and belly fats, the bladder leakage improved immensely. I almost feel like before child birth. Thank you, Dr Berg!!! I totally agree the root cause for most bladder leakage is insulin resistance.

I'm 37, i've not been able to control my badder for probably 10 years already so this started really early for me. I'm sure you right about insulin. I just make myself do this. It's really hard for me to tell myself no and not eat. Probably one of the hardest things I can do honestly... I know that is horrible but its the truth. I eat to enjoy not for the health of my body, that being said I don't take pharmaceuticals of any kind really.... I can't stand modern medicine. Im gonna have to really look into this keto stuff and intermittent fasting

Just slowly move your fasting period one hour at a time to make the transition easier. I made dinner earlier and then I skipped breakfast and made a early lunch. It’s funny but hunger is often just the body responding to a time you feed it. Think about if you are hungry and you get a phone call that a love one was in the hospital and you had to come right away. You will notice that your hunger will disappear. A good part of hunger is simply habit.

I didn't have a leaky bladder but I used to go to the bathroom very frequently and I got really fed up with my sleep being disturbed at night to go to the bathroom (usually only once) and not being able to get back to sleep. Just over a year ago after watching your videos I realized that I was insulin resistant so I started healthy keto and then introduced IF - 20/4. Within a few months I lost 17kg and since then, while continuing with keto and IF, I've stayed at 50kg which is ideal for my height. I saw some improvement in the number of times I needed to go to the bathroom as well as many other improvements. I will be 74 next month and I try to do as much exercise as I can. Four days ago I started doing stomach vacuums and already I'm amazed that I no longer need to visit the bathroom at night so I'm getting better quality sleep, and I only go to the bathroom 4-5 times a day. So the combination of keto, IF, reversal of insulin resistance and vacuums has very much improved my life.

I've always enjoyed crosswords, Sudoku and other mind-stimulating things. I can solve most games of Freecell in 1-2 minutes. I learn new things very quickly and am still very good at mental arithmetic. Incidentally, I don't have a TV out of choice because I want my mind to be active and challenged. Dr Berg. Thanks so much for your help in changing my life. I have been to doctors over the years for various conditions related to what I know now as insulin resistance or diabetes. 20 years ago I was told in passing that I was pre diabetic but not told how to fix that. So now I’m doing that. Not quite at 100% keto but have managed most days to be 50-100 with carbs & im doing intermittent fasting 3 days a week omad the other days 18 hours. Sleeping better cause I’m not in the washroom 5-6 times a night. Thank you so much

Ok, that explains it! I was just thinking the other day how much my Overactive Bladder has improved even though I stopped my Oxybutynin at least 6 months ago (the dry mouth was way too much to handle!). I've been doing IF/Keto since Ash Wednesday (a little over 3 months ago). I've lost 29 lbs so far and this is SO easy to do!! I'm doing the OMAD right now - what's not to like?? I no longer have to worry about what I'll be taking for my mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks and what do I take for lunch??!? No more of that. And I'm rarely hungry. Just like you said. Thanks Dr Berg (and Karen, too, for your recipes)!! I tell anyone who asks to tune into your channel. You rock!!

Thanks Dr. Berg! I've been doing healthy predominant plant based keto for nearly two years and lost over 100 lbs. However I still experience urgency and frequency and also noticed foamy urine. According to you this is low kidney function so I am going to be tested to see. Appreciate your info!

i would also add strengthening the ab muscles , cause sometimes it's the intestines pushing on the bladder that creates the discomfort , so doing stomach vacuums and strengthening these muscles will greatly help . do that as part of strength training program , which helped me the most with insulin resistance , so u would be hitting 2 birds with one stone .

As a side note, the short clip of childbirth around the 2:30 mark is not helpful or accurate. Birth doesn’t have to be like that. Please switch that clip with a clip of a calm and peaceful birth. 🙏🏻 I’ve birthed 4 children and will birth my 5th next month. Most births are like that, so its entirely accurate. Visit the labor ward in any hospital. Very few people have a calm birth, it's highly stressful any way ya slice it. Portraying a woman giving birth calmly would be inaccurate.

Spot on regarding the ANS. I have a chronic issue with B12 deficiency. Incontinence came simultaneously with balance issues, cognitive loss, pins & needles, numbness, vision & hearing loss. Ob/gyn prescribed Betmiga - assuming it was a nerve issue. Took years to figure out the B12 problem - will take years to recover, perhaps partially. It’s important to note if the incontinence occurs along with other neuro issues - & demand an “active” b12 test. Serum B12 does not tell you how much of the vitamin is useable. It could also be a problem with other deficiencies. And if you have iron deficiency along with b12 deficiency they can cancel each other out in the blood tests - showing a negative for anemia.
