The critiqued about hot girl feminism not being real feminism comes from “hot girl feminism” just rebranding fitting the male gaze as empowering. When it’s really just the woman/femme playing into exactly what men wanna see while making them even more entitled to have access to it (sex/your body)

26:27 “that getting a man with money means your needs will be taken care of”, the thing is you said it, black women ARE the breadwinners in their household. The reason they are trying to mirror that mentality is because, their needs have NOT been taken care of in their own realities, so now it’s like what’s the worst that can happen? “Getting a man with money” will at least mean that at least one of their needs “paid bills” and “less stress” will get taken care of. These Women feel used when THEY are the sole providers/breadwinners.
@marhabamango3696

Yea I don’t trust men to protect either which is why I cringe every time women say they want men to be the sole provider. Being financially bound to a potentially dangerous man while having nothing of your own to leave when necessary is the scariest and most disempowering circumstance to me. I have no issue with the the rap girls and well established women saying they need men with money cuz they have their own money. But I take issue with broke women bragging about depending on men for everything 🥴 as if it could never go left real quick.

Pumpkin!! I don’t trust men to be protectors either. That’s funny asf to me I was just writing about that. I’ve protected myself and the women around me more than any man around me has. Men have been more controlling, abusive, and manipulative than they have been protecting. Women and femmes can also be that way (everyone has the capacity) but they aren’t scripted as the protectors. Men want the title so bad but continue to fail to do fulfill their roles. Reforming gender expectations is definitely needed and I’m glad our generation is being the change we want to see

This was a very insightful video and I absolutely loved it. I wanted to add something to this from an international perspective. I am african,congolese to be precise and although most of the west tend to conveniently forget it, most african countries are capitalists. And there is a certain level of nihilism in the population and for women specifically, love has taken second place to capital. Women want men who can take them out of poverty by whatever means .

Love the video, for the part when you said how Black men are faced with systemic issues that limit their ability to gain wealth and be "men", misogynoir comes thru bc people will blame Black women for somehow "emasculating" Black men instead of citing the real problem (white supremacist capitalist patriarchy) 🎃
@herbyxrevolus
@herbyxrevolus 2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree! I think it’s easier for ppl to blame Herero black women/femmes for potentially desiring black men with money without critiquing & placing the blame where it truly belongs, the structures that create the hyper importance on capital.

@@herbyxrevolus They won’t critique the structure because they like the structure. They’re aspiring to replicate it someday. They view their economic reality as temporary and coincidental, not systemic. In their minds, all they have to do is hustle for years on end to make money and finally “earn” sexual opportunities with women. By then, it’ll all be worth it. According to them, if this plan doesn’t work, then it just means they did something wrong. 🤦🏾‍♀️ Very (and I mean VERY) rarely do people actually question society or their position in it, let alone imagine a different one. Men/mascs are especially unlikely to do this because the legacy of patriarchy at least offers them the potential for a higher position, even if it almost never elevates the collective of them.

I really appreciate you expressing that you feel more protected by Black feminine energy, I don't think you're alone in that opinion by a long-shot! My mom and I recently had a conversation about Black LGBT+ history, in Chicago specifically. She said that she remembers my great-grandmother telling her stories about her experiences with Black lesbians in her lifetime, and even though she identified as straight, lesbian relationships made perfect sense to her, because "you safer with a bulldagga than you'll ever be with any man...'specially if he from Mississippi."

I had to quickly pause to comment: please do the video on toxic hip hop culture Herb. Thank you . And as always I really do appreciate how you break it down. I love any creative that makes me sit and think and go "hmm u know wha u right, u onto something there" lol. Also, my dilemma with female feminism in rap honestly, is that I agree that there needs to be a space for women and fem identifying individuals to be able to talk about our bodies and sexuality explicitly because they're ours. If anyone has more of a right to feel good af talking about it, it should be us. We have every right to feel liberated in taking autonomy with how we talk about our own bodies and what we wanna do with em. Cus goodness knows men and masc individuals have been talking about it for years and exploiting it for their benefit and literally it has become a massive signifier of hip hop culture. But on the other hand I question if every female rap mv really needs the woman to have her clothes off and busting it down to show agency and liberation. It's almost seeming now like a female rapper won't get as much attention for her skill and talent if her body don't look a certain way for most, or if she ain't at least showing a lot of skin and singing about riding di*k. What is she don't like dick? What if she's asexual? Don't get me started on the colourism topic. I literally sit here and think as well so what happens if a female rapper wants to sit in a bit ass fly t shirt like Billie Eilish does in the media and rap about various topics with a hip hop beat. Will she not get as much attention cus she ain't got her clothes off? And that makes me really question if we aren't just ultimately being made to feed the male gaze, but it's marketed as if we have the autonomy. I also think about how I get perhaps it can't be helped as we DO live in a capitalist, white supremacist society..and who makes the biggest profit of the female artist rapping about her liberation...the one who owns the label and a % of the music, usually a man. Then I'm like..it doesn't sound very feminist anymore.... then I get annoyed lol. My brain. Anywho, I'm aware we as women and fems need to take it one step at a time and even after my long af comment (sorry😅) I'm glad that there has been a space created for us to talk as explicitly as we want. One step at a time. 👏🏾🙌🏾

The last bit of this comment reminds me of an exert of a Jouelzy video where she talks about how the patriarchy basically absorbs and sanitises radical/revolutionary resistance so that it eventually exists only as a temporary obstruction before ultimately refitting its (the resistance’s) purpose to fit the status quo This is seen in in situations for instance where former activists become paid influencers or in this case female rappers who initially use their art as a form of self liberation, become hypersexualised tools of capitalism and the music/production labels that represent them. In this way, capitalism and the patriarchy have succeeded in absorbing the resistance of female autonomy and liberation and have repurposed that art in a way that furthers both capitalistic and patriarchal ideals.

First of all, pumpkin. Second, I really love that this analysis didn’t remove some of the expectations of today’s feminism from the historical context OR the socialization. Both of those things play a huge part in how we see the world and ourselves in it. No matter how many people try to divorce themselves from it(without a REAL deconstruction I might add), no man is an island.

Also Pumpkin. And your personality is gold. And to continue from my previous comment... my point is why can't there be space for all of it? Today I wanna watch a fem rapper bust it down in stripper heels and rap about whatever topic, then tommorow I wanna watch a fem rapper sit down in a big as t shirt if she/ they wanna and rap about whatever. There are so many diverse male/masc rappers, rapping about various subjects and become successful. So why not the same energy towards the women/fems. Ya get me? I don't want us to be pigeon holed. And the "it's not marketable" arguement is bullshit. It's just hella sus to me...sussss. But again imma appreciate the fact that we have reached a space where we can explicitly talk about our sexuality. One step at a time. OK. Imma shut up now. Cus again my brain lol. Thanks for the video btw. 👏🏾

Thank you for this video, it is incredible that they try to sell us female rap as feminist, when it is simply female rap that adapts to gender stereotypes that can be very toxic for society. That, contrary to being liberating, can be more oppressive, since they give too much value to the female body that it really does not have. We give beauty a value that it does not have, that is why many women only focus on being pretty, because we think that the simple fact of being beautiful already gives you value. And unfortunately, society does value women just for being pretty, which is why this whole wave of useless influencers. And it is quite sad that they try to sell us that as feminism.

I recently broke up with someone and told him the reason being, I don't trust you to lead this family and I can't trust you with my life. When I hear Bills, Bills, Bills it goes back to my introduction to that way of thinking which was Gwen Guthrie, she lived across the street from my elementary school Jerz, Holla!!! Where my home life reality did not look that way (My Mother was married to my low down gambling cheating wife beating POS but steadily pushed the importance of him being respected as a so-called man) that I did not want THAT existence. So, being on the precipice of puberty hearing "Ain't nothing going on but the rent" SPOKE VOLUMES TO ME!!! Especially, how men responded to that mantra IE Eddie Murphy's (funny it was him on so many levels) Raw. Where Women were learning one message and Men learning another was deep to try to navigate in the 80's,90's and on....

🎃 Pumpkin 💜💋 Also, just to add my 2 cents: I used to believe everyone deserved relationships and intimacy. Men taught me that's not true with literal hard knocks. I will never deal with a man who has less than I do, ever again. It's not worth it. Men are not willing to do so many things that women want in intimacy. In terms of commitment, in terms of healthy and intimate communication, in terms of self growth, in terms of just being fucking faithful half the time. The things they put us through are very often not worth the investment we put in to get with them. The very least he can do is show up with his financial house in order, because damned if I'ma put up with the bullshit many (arguably most) men come with AND ALSO fund both of us. You could also say that (for both men & women), it's not a convo about fundamental worth, as much as it is that finances are one of the few outward signs of a person's development sometimes. Not in all cases of course, but certainly in the case of the man who is broke, living off the government, and trying to make it as a rapper with a substantial weed habit that he cannot actually afford. Some men who live like that have multiple children. Just saying that, when you see the signs that someone is not in a position to contribute to your life, (including the sign of him being a "broke boy" or a "scrub") Maya Angelou's advice applies. Believe them the first time they show you. Don't indulge their fantasies so they can complicate your life with problems like pregnancy etc, that from the get go they could not fund the answers to.

another reason that megan gets looped in with the other girls talking about $eX is because she displays lyrical ability, and the expectation is that she changes routes. Leave the $eX at home and talk about the underlying message in your music. That domination bring that to the forefront u can talk about having a chokehold on his mind body and spirit but and no just about the choking on his man meat. Plus like i said the bar for megan was high but she falling down because she fell out with nicki 1 and 2 people feel like she not living up to her fullest potential. Megan is my top 3. Reason she slides into third and is eclipsed by cupcakke is the lack of versatility.

im not a woman but as a feminist who once identified with the female experience and is still affected by misogyny and is into hip hop i enjoy a lot of female hip hop and i love the empowerment in the songs especially women owning their own sexuality and asserting dominance. but i have an issue with some of the messages especially the very pro-capitalist messages in a lot of hip hop and enforcing of gender roles. male hip hop calls girls hoes and sexualises them and talks about being rich and getting money, then female hip hop was sexualising themselves and telling men to get rich for them. i really felt there was a lack of hip hop from women with the kind of feminist messages i wanted to hear. i do understand that there are cultural and racial differences i will not be able to relate to as a white person but i am thinking in the grand scheme of things how these attitudes can cause harm to its listeners. and now because i identify as a man i see a lot more clearly how these messages negatively impact men too and in return negatively impact women. and i see these messages not only in hip hop but also spread on social media. But there are songs like Queen Latifahs U.N.I.T.Y for example that i think have really good feminist messages especially for black women and i wish i would hear more songs like that in the genre. regardless still love listening to female hip hop! 💅
