Must watch for every sister and parent. As a sister, What I learned from this debate, as a summary, is that we sisters have to firstly stick to our priorities, our roles in Islam (I.e. family obligations). Everything else (talents, studies) comes secondary. By all means, pursue education (Islamic and non-Islamic) or maybe even career, if need be, as long as it doesn’t override our true priorities (raising families in a strong, stable Islamic background) and we don’t have to be in a constant mixed environment with the non-mahrams. As Brother Daniel said, we don’t have to go down the same lizard hole as the west to pursue an education, there are other possible means to achieve it. I hope I understood it, or at least some of it well. The feminist/Islamic clash can be very confusing. I just recognize my priorities, and imma stick to them, in sha Allah.

I'm honestly angry. The endless slander towards Daniel, prior the debate, during the debate and after the debate is sickening. Wallahi, I'm sick. As a 20 year old female, I'm scared and I'm really really sad watching how Muslim women carry themselves these days. Why are we like this, even when provided with evidence especially from the Quran and Sunnah, we still shake our heads and nod to the western ideologies merely because it makes us feel empowered. Edit : I'm not against women going to university btw, there's nothing wrong with women gaining knowledge. Daniel's arguments is full of what ifs, it's all built around assumptions. She will be educated and arrogant, standard of man gets raised, she will become a feminist which is so stupid. I'm from a third world coutries girls here couldn't give less crap about feminism. This whole argument shouldn't revolve around religion. It's just a personal preference/opinion. To me it's a waste of time because I know what I'm gonna do. It could be good for others.

I'm a muslim women in my final year studying Architectural Engineering. I was pressured by my family and society to go into higher education without really grasping the reality of the journey ahead. The system of higher education is designed for you to feel constantly stressed while simultaneously not learning much at all. It was only by my third year that I actually started to learn any valuable engineered skills, and by that time, I had already wasted so much of my time and energy learning abstract ideas that I could never really utilize in my day to day life. Most women (muslim and non muslim) in this major complain about the work load and struggle more in comparison to our male colleagues, all while not having to raise a family. This is because it goes against our nature of working/thinking like a man for long periods. The higher education model, especially in the field of engineering, does not benefit women in the long run. It does not prepare her for raising children, managing a house, cooking meals, etc. These are skills that are NEEDED to raise the next generation of healthy Muslims. But when that is lacking, and all you have is a degree in a field that is designed to make a women feel constantly exhausted, then you know that it's a failed system.

I'm a highly educated muslim woman and let me tell you this; WE HAVE BEEN BRAINWASHED. I remember after high school been sick and tired of school, and just wanting to take a break. But my mom basically told me that I would be a failure if I didn't go for higher education. Unfortunately I listened, and the irony is that it has taken me longer time than usual and I have yet not even finished. Also the job the degree leads to is not even something that I want to do (even though it pays well). I have in recent years realized that it's just unrealistic for women to have children, be career women and to be good wives to their husbands. At one point or another one has to compromise, and it's usually the family that is being neglected. Another thing that I've noticed is that a lot of women (both muslim and non muslim) who have children and who are working, seem to always be stressed. These type of women would also constantly complain and tell others how lucky they are for not being married. Because think about it how fair is it really that women are the ones bearing and nursing children, and on top of that are expected to do the same work as men in the work place. They are suppose to just forget that they pushed out a whole baby a few + months ago and come back to work? Like how does that even make sense?? Not to mention being on your period as a woman every month and the pain and discomfort associated with that. Reality is women face many challenges that men doesn't in the work place. And for some weird reason we're not considering those things at all when women are being pushed to work. So what feminism has done is to make women miserable and stressed because they simply can't do it all. My point with all this is that people shouldn't listen to all the nonsense about female empowerment. A lot of these feminists will probably end up miserable and bitter. Because the thing is men and women are built different, and that's what Islam takes into consideration unlike feminism. Hopefully more women realize this before it's too late. May Allah make it easy for us! Edit: To some of the comments; I have never said that women can't have hobbies etc. In fact if you're a stay at home wife for example you probably going to have more flexible time compared to if you're working. Moreover at the end of the day people can choose to do whatever they want to. If you feel like higher education is for you, then be my guest. I just wanted give my experiences as someone who has spent most of my twenties studying and working, and tell you just how stressful and depressing it really is (especially as a woman).

@Go Transcrie thank you for this. It was indeed eye opening. My whole life I was taught Jesus is the son of god. I dont blame god or jesus for that..I blame the pastor. I held a lot of anger in me towards the church and how corrupt it became...and even to this day refuse to go back. Islam has definitely caught my interest though. Theres a pureness to it, warmth and love that I feel from it that feels genuine. I used to feel that with the church when I was a kid, but as I grew I saw how corrupt the whole system is there, and how people twisted the word of god to fit their narrative. It felt broken. I come to realise the inherent problem with high level of education for women specifically to gain material wealth. The chasing of status can truly be addictive causing most women to delay marriage, as they find it harder to find someone who can be above them in the status game, due to this, family values and having children take the back seat. You're basically just describing an economics problem. The issue is, as you are experiencing, that you don't really have a choice about whether or not you need to provide for yourself in lieu of having someone who wants to provide for you. As such it must be possible for women (like men) to provide for themselves economically at least until it is feasible that they no longer need to. If you have no means to generate any income then you are *forced* to sell yourself into a marriage with whoever is willing to save you from your economic crisis. That economic force of distress creates unfulfilling marriages which exist out of economic necessities rather than any genuine desire for each other. Daniel can say it's all woke feminist post modernist marxist propaganda and throw in all the other buzz words he likes. But the fact of the matter is we all live under capitalism and if you want food in your stomach and a roof over your head you need to have the option to earn a living for yourself. If you want to give up your career once you've found a person you love because they want to provide for you, that's fine. But if women don't have the ability to earn an income while they find their husband then they are just forced into the first available option which Islam then prohibits them from leaving. That's a marriage based on economic necessity rather than anything genuine. That's the issue.

@@sockpastarock7082there is truth in this. These men want largely disempowered, economically suffocated women who will always be 'obedient' to them in return for 'financial security'. The remarkable thing is it appears, from the comments, that Muslim women WANT to be in that predicament.

I saw many Muslim patients and I felt like I was making a difference, not just working to earn money. I wasn't married. It was fulfilling for me. However after I married, especially once I had my first child, they became my priority. Motherhood was first. Mh husband has the financial responsibility and I am homemaker. Do I miss work? Sometimes yes as I want to help people, I enjoyed my job. There many people saying women never enjoy work but I did. But I know my priorities. Kids and husband come first. Once kids are grown in sha Allah I would like to go back to my field of speciality,if my husband allows. I remember once meeting a Muslim patient ans she telling me how glad she was to meet another muslim doctor as she felt more comfortable talking to me. Nothing wrong with getting education and using it with good intentions. Just don't let it interfere with primary responsibilities.

And I was viciously opposed by the society to have that innate opinion, Its great to watch this eye-opening debate, now that I witness how it is so true women in our societies are growing old without marriage, and the married ones face divorce very early, mostly because of their desire to pursue careers that they have worked so hard to get an education for because of social pressure. That part at the end regarding cats is so sad and so true, seeing 2 of my closest relatives, one ending up divorced twice and one without a marriage, both leaving Islam and seeking deism and atheism, both ending up raising cats instead of children, I pray to Allah to guide them, and grant them good husbands.

Daniel is not exactly saying muslim women shouldn't be educated, he is saying if you are going to do education, don't make it a priority in your life. Make marriage and being the homemaker a priority as a woman. If you're gonna do education, do it with the correct intentions in the most halal way possible. Make sure you are trying your best to do maybe an online course/degree from home (not going to the university where it's mixed genders) while the food is cooking in the oven and the children are napping and once the house is clean for your husband to come home from a busy, stressful job to a peaceful home instead of a messy house. Your intentions shouldn't be that you are doing it to get some sort of security or independence or female empowerment. It's the husband/male relatives/the imam of the community it's the men who are supposed to provide security, money etc for women and children and we have to embrace and love and submit to the fact that Allah has made it so that we are supposed to be dependent upon men. Gender roles are real and we need to be following them based on Quran and Sunnah.

Except this is a fantasy. In the event a woman's husband dies/or divorces, the male relatives/community very rarely if not ever, support the woman. She becomes a dependent on the state. What does she do then? She could marry again, but again, I'm sure you know men very rarely will marry a widow/divorcee in these times. And the scenario you've given of a woman studying from home ,looking after children, the home AND cooking all herself is absolutely preposterous. She's a human being, not a robot. Think objectively, not of your own desires. Furthermore it is up to a husband and wife how they choose to run their household, no one else has the right to judge or speculate how they do so. Woman are not meant to be cooped up inside a home, this is how you end up with repressed men leading to all sorts of fitna. Lastly, it's very rare now that a man can run a household, and provide financial for his wife AND children, hence why unfortunately a second salary is needed. Not sure where you're based but in the west , especially the UK cost of living has had a disastrous effect on everyone. Allah hu alam

Thank goodness the women in my family all have jobs, otherwise they would never have been able to escape the domestic abuse by their men because they weren't doing what they were SUPPOSED to do, and cheating on their wives! Everyone should be able to earn some bread, you never know when times get tough. This privileged commentary on women not having to work only serves the elite class that doesn't have to worry if 1 person's income can pay for their child's diapers, food, and school fees. They should talk once they're homeless and hungry. I really don't want a person sitting in the safety of four walls and a ceiling in a crisp shirt to tell me what's good for me. And talking about marriage, it's from Allah, he destines people to get married at a certain time with a certain person. What should women do by then? As a woman i appreciate daniel speaking on this matter, no one (from whom i watch) else is. Ive always wondered what to do career wise, as ive been taught i had to have a career or else id be looked down on and may suffer under a husband. It never sat right with me and i always felt depressed thinking about having a career than feeling empowered. Yes outwardly it seems empowering but the reality is when you work outside everyday, it becomes so mentally draining. Ive worked for some time and altho the jobs were respectable and “fun” i couldnt get myself to like working. I tried hard to trick myself to like working but eventually i started being real with myself. I hated having to work with nonmahram men, i hated leaving my family, i hated using up so much of my time just to work, i hated being a corporate slave, i hated that my societal status depended on my career, it was mentally draining to force myself to be assertive (because thats the only way to survive and grow in a workplace. There are even studies on how men get more work opportunities because theyre naturally more assertive than women). Women are able to trick/force themselves to have careers despite this but not without a toll on themselves, their family, and society. Now what i want is to be a house wife who also volunteers her time for the muslim community (teaching the deen, etc). This is what i deem as empowerment, to be there for my family and ummah rather than have a career just so that i can go shopping and vacation all the time. Women (and men) should seek islamic knowledge. And theres nothing wrong with women seeking worldly knowledge, but no doubt society has taken things too far where women put their family/islamic responsibilities over worldly matters. That being said, men are failing women too. So although i want to be a housewife it scares me how men have given up their responsibilities as leaders of the home. Men have become weak and unable to lead and care for their wives properly. Recently i read daniels article about this topic and it made me feel better but the worry still remains. At the end of the day if a marriage goes wrong women suffer most. So we really need to educate the ummah on this topic just as much as the dangers of feminism.

@AC I've known both practicing and non-practicing Muslims. One thing that was told to me, is that despite claims of equality that Arabs are on top of the pecking order. In large part, due to Arabic being the language of Islam. Khalid Muhammad for example, constantly complained about Arabs looking down on both American Blacks and Africans. I find myself in agreement with Muslims in the west, as they are willing to push back on "Skittles". Especially with "Skittles" being pushed in the schools.

She was the definition and product of western feminism. Education for women is important in Islam but not based on the ideologies, curriculums and goals of western education structures. But In all honesty, we Muslims at large have failed to come up with a different, compatible, and secure education system for our sisters. MashAllah great job explaining this brother Daniel. I couldn’t agree more and I wish there was more content for traditional Muslim women out there. I am revert of 10 years married to a man from the Middle East. We both have 4 sisters. All of my sisters are in their late 20s-30s, have masters degrees and “good jobs” but they are all single (with a history of terrible partners and emotional damage from past relationships), on multiple psychiatric medications for depression and anxiety and are all unhealthy from a western diet. They don’t have religion and struggle every day with loneliness and will likely grow old alone with no children or stable life with a husband. After my parents are gone they will be lost and they likely won’t have a family of their own due to their reduced fertility and distaste for marriage. Out of five daughters I’m the only one married and currently expecting a child iA. I pray my family accepts Islam. On the other hand, two of my husband’s four sisters are happily married and have young babies of their own. They are much happier and emotionally mature and live a simple Islamic life. They finished high school and study Islamic sciences through womens groups at their local masjid. They raise their kids together and with the help of aunties and other women in the family. They are NEVER alone and always have family around. They don’t eat processed foods and are not overweight or suffering any major mental health issues. Yes they have less money and material wealth, less “freedom” and less education but they have way more fulfillment and contentment raising a family that no career or degree could fill. His other two sisters are studying at womens university (their majors are home and religious sciences) and hoping to get married soon. Personally I would prefer my daughters to have the latter life. I used to believe the feminist lie but since leaving school and work I’ve never been happier being a housewife. We need a movement of Muslim women (similar to the Christian “tradwife”/traditional femininity movements) that helps younger women connect to the their womanhood and to better understand their deen, their fertility, and the at-home feminine arts.

Im a muslim woman with absolutely no debate skills but as a former feminist, I think I would have been able to come up with better rebuttals. Unfortunately, most of her side of the "debate" was a cleaner version of "its not fair! how can you say that? Im so offended!". After being born and raised in the west, I had to ask myself one day why I had so many issues with Islam when I was in my 20s. It was because I was raised to not only think I was equal but also fulfill the same responsibilities as men in the outside world and all the responsibilities of traditional women at home. I felt that bc my muslim family left me with all the work that Islam was unfair, even though Allah never put that responsibility on us in the first place. It was only after I read the verse "the male is not like the female" in the Quran that I understood Allah never made us to be equal, we have different biologies therefore different responsibilities. Everything I learned for 25 years was a complete lie. Now that my heart has FULLY submitted to Allah's commandments, I no longer feel "less than" for our role as wives and mothers. We dont have equality or equal responsibility but we do have equal reward for the same deeds of fasting, salah, sadaqah, being kind to parents etc ... Our other works will be rewarded according to Allah's wisdom. Im so glad I left that feminist mentality that rotted my heart. Ladies, we need to accept that their is no cherry picking in submission, your heart either submits to Allahs commandments or it dosent. There is no partial submission. Our hearts will be questioned, our intentions will be examined. we can't escape our deeds on the day of judgement. Imagine showing up for reckoning thinking you have all these works that didn't count for anything bc you kept competing with men and left your role behind? How sad would it be that the same thing you were expecting reward for was something that Allah only wrote for men while your wife/mother rewards were left in the dust bc you filled your worldly life fighting submission? Dont sell yourself out. Ask Allah for understanding and study Islam. May Allah guide us all Ameen.

Sister, hear something from a male's perspective, you're going to be an excellent wife and a perfect mother, in sha Allah. Your role in the family is no less than what "your man" has to offer. Both men and women are superior to their counterparts. Depends on how we perceive things. Your "job" as a wife and a mother is going to be the BEST job in the world. Even your father and your future husband are going to be admitting it without skipping a beat. I have a slightly offtopic question here, Please ignore it if you don't feel like addressing it. I always bring this topic up to understand what different sisters think about the following opinion, _For most men, the positive masculinity (having superior protective power and taking care of a woman mentality) goes away when THEY empower themselves above the normal threshold (what feminists do). That sensitive, ladylike behavior is gone (some of the cases). Men feel weak in front of a woman to show their masculine side (I'm talking about the good men; not the vile, toxic ones). The status makes THEM more superior than their man._

Assalammualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu. Jazakallahu khair brother Daniel for his good effort in explaining Allahhumma barik. I am a Chinese revert converted into islam together with my Chinese husband in year 2020 الحمد الله after researching about islam together for few years after married. Allah guides whom He wills سبحان الله we always get to see the best of islam and came to an agreement that Islam is undeniably the best guidance for us all mankind and we would like to embrace islam completely إن شاء الله "O you who have believed, enter into Islam completely [and perfectly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy. (Quran 2;208)" We both came from secular education background, given we met in university seeking secular education and “fall” in love, then we got married 3 years before we converted into islam. We are the only child at home so we grow up in get-all-we-want environment. Despite the “good” life we have, we were never content, and the narcissist in us, thinking we are always “superior” because of the “education level” we had. Until we found islam, to realise if the blessings we had is only make us arrogant (like the syaitan) then it is not blessings but only calamities. Last few weeks, my family visited us, and finally meeting after 2 years of lockdown, we announced to them our conversion. I am not surprised, my mom responded: "what is the point of you studying so high all these years to just became muslim?!" After knwing I wear complete hijab, she even said the "modern" Muslim no longer cover their head...just so, she asked me to do the same..I insisted on my hijab, and she stopped contacting me. A relationship that is not based for the sake of Allah, super fragile. And after knowing that I decided to be a stay-home wife, preparing to give birth to a muslim children and homeschool them إن شاء الله she showed me a face of disgust.. My mom is a “modern” mom, feminist, and have been working all her life. I don’t remember having memory of her spending time with me growing up, but only my teachers and friends, who now no longer with me because of each responsibilities in life. I answered her: While my husband is out there putting a fight with the world to bring food on the table for our family, I will not leave my lonely children to school by going to work, letting the teachers in the school to hug and guide them, while them having a mom- a muslim mother. My mom was laughing at my thoughts and looking at my dad as if it was a shame to be a mom. My mom mentioned she can get all she wants because she is independent, without the need to depend on my father. One more point, I grow up thinking my father is useless because mom is independent and she is strong to get what she wants..And this is the last thing I want my children to think of their father. Naudhubillah Islam changed my husband and my life..الحمد الله. He no longer jealous of me having lunch with my male colleagues in the mixed environment, or me out-performed him because my male employer prefered my work than the other male colleagues or me being the party butterfly and not home all day…I am at home now, seeking ilm to equip myself to be the first school for my children إن شاء الله, while my hero, my husband working to provide the best home for our small family.. إن شاء الله I don’t know what is the good being “empowered” woman, but if being one means to be an arrogant one, or to stay away from home while Allah commanded us to be good mom and wife mixing around with many sexes (males, female, transgender) in the world of fitnah, slandering, showing off…then what is the point getting so called “education”, higher position, higher income, and to gain the wrath of Allah? Even though you see me inferior to you in wealth and offspring, perhaps my Lord will grant me ˹something˺ better than your garden, and send down upon your garden a thunderbolt from the sky, turning it into a barren waste. (Quran 18;39-40)

Twice he tried to put words in her mouth, and she didn't take the bait, he tried to confuse her, she didn't flinch, there is nothing she accused him of that couldn't be verified, or I didn't know about it before, that others didn't accuse him of. The moment a person uses PowerPoint slides for the rebuttal section of the debate, they already lost the debate. PowerPoint slides are made BEFOREHAND and it makes sense to use them for your intro. Not for rebuttal. If you're using slides for rebuttal, then you're not really rebuttle-ing, you're just extending your intro into the rebuttal. Only people with a weak understanding of the topic resort to this tactic. Harris did this and got humiliated. Other atheists also use the same tactic.
