It seems counter productive to their cause to basically get anything shut down when a woman is put in place of a man? I mean if it was cat woman holding a gun to jokers head then it would be okay? It should be okay either way because 1) FANTASY and being 2) Equality... Right?

the problem is not even feminists, it's the double standard of political correctness from the self-righteous people on the left. This is a political issue between the so called progressives (anti-free speech) vs liberals (pro free speech). The comic audience ignored all these political bullshit and that's why this is happening. I'm sick of these feminists who think they're feminists but are really whiny little cry babies. I read the New 52 story arc of Death in the Family. *SPOILERS AHEAD* In that story Joker torments the likes of Batman, Catwoman, Robin, Red Robin, Red Hood, Nightwing and Batgirl. He has the entire Batfamily tied to chairs and their faces all covered up and smeared in what looks like blood. He then makes them believe that HE CUT OFF THEIR FACES! Each cover of the characters story arc which interlinks with this story has said character (Batman, Nightwing, Red Robin etc...) either tied up by Joker or with Joker style faces and grins. Why does no one talk about that? If the Batgirl one is so "contraversial" then what about these ones? Because they're male? Because it's 100% ok for Red Robin and Nightwing to be tormented by Joker but not Batgirl?! The entirety of the Killing Joke story is more contraversial than that cover you cry baby feminists!

The issue with that "not all feminists are like that" is you get Into a gray area. This isn't directed at you in particular but quite often we bump into a no true Scotsman fallacy where someone isn't a real feminist once they do something like this. While I believe the intentions of feminism long ago were more focused on equal rights back in a time where I truly think women were more disadvantaged than men were, modern feminism has failed to account for the issues that men face and that women face and accurately solving the source of the problem. One of the big divides that people fall into is of a patriarchy exists. this is a common feminist belief, unless you fall into equity feminism, which a lot of people don't agree exists. I identify as egalitarian and I believe whatever intentions feminism originally had are completely gone now thanks to the new wave that is around. Does the definition of feminism change due to the people that are using it, or does the definition stay the same and simply people are misidentifying themselves? That's the question you want to ask yourself that will decide if you want to use the label feminist or egalitarian.
@proudguardofwhiterun57709 жыл бұрын
"Everyone" or women? Because if you want "everyone" to be equal, then you are more than a feminist. That is called "Egalitarianist". Just saying.

Yeah because hating men isn't feminism, it's misandry. People need to stop getting these two mixed up. And btw "equality for one side" makes no sense.

I would like to point out a few things that may not be fully considered when talking about the variant cover and "sexual assault on batman". Of the Variant itself, personally I like it. I think it is a great homage/nod to the Killing joke and for those versed in the lore/understand the reference it makes a lot of sense. However, if you are coming into Batgirl, or have just seen the cover out of context, it looks pretty bad. A terrified teen/young woman (i forget how old she is in this comic) with a creepy older guy in a dominant position paints a VERY bad picture when you are marketing your comic to young women. As a business it makes TOTAL sense for DC to not put that out there as its akin to shooting themselves in the foot with the primary reader base (of that comic). The artist and DC were, as far as I can tell, already in the process of pulling this before things blew up (more on that below) As to "Why aren't feminists talking about batman comics (as per the examples)" that is easy to answer. Male heroes (comic or otherwise) are more relate-able when in the throws of adversity. I won't read Wolverine for he dialogue, I read for the ass kickin he does that goes with the story. Very FEW superheroes get you on the ground floor without the violence/struggle to pull you in. Female superheroes on the other hand fall under the same problem Women (in real life) have a problem with. Seeing a woman get the tar kicked out of her is something society shy's away from (same with women who are super crazy killers, think mama from Dredd but doing the actual killing). Better writing and pushing forward through the fog with those in hand would really help (in general) to get better female characters/stories written and produced. Lastly, the whole debacle of how this was handled online is just sad. One side lamenting the virtues and situation of a character they may actually know nothing about besides "It has to do with Batman because there is 'Bat' in her name) while the otherside (in typical fashion as well) throws every virtrol hatebomb they have in their arsenal like that some how is going to change things. the TL:DR version: They were already changing it because it didn't go with the vision they have for a Batgirl comic aimed at teens/young women. Everyone started shouting, and DC said "F it" and shut it down.
@HappyPotat9 жыл бұрын
And to be fair about Spider Woman; 1) Spider woman is supposed to have spider powers. 2) Not many people have heard of Spider Woman (though saying that I'm sure feminists will now use that as an excuse). When you think about it, most of the time, radical feminists are actually more sexist towards women than others.

Sai22 i think this whole sex change of characters shit has gone to far, bat woman, Thor, and now this... superman even got ripped off... why don't they make more independent female superheros and villains instead of taking an already existing superhero and making him (always him, never her) lose his masculinity. seems more sexist for both sides if you just remake them... also, static shock is Black Thor but didn't look anything like Thor and wasn't even in the same universe (kinda) and guess what... SUCCESS. i can't stand hearing the name bat woman because it makes me think of failure to much.

The Joker is a bad guy so by that logic you're supposed to feel somewhat uncomfortable by his antics however entertaining they may be. He isn't portrayed as a role model nor should he be. What I see when I look at that cover is a reference to The Killing Joke where Joker shows up at Barbra and Jim Gordons house and shoots her through the spine paralyzing her. In The Killing Joke he paralyzes her, kidnaps her, strips her naked and takes pictures, and shows them to Jim Gordon in an attempt to show him how easily someone can go insane and become just like Joker. Im paraphrasing but thats the gist of the story. Its a reference because he's holding the same gun and wearing the same clothes as he did when he shot her. Something that bothered me about the Joker/Batgirl cover is the narrative feminists endorse. Batgirl constantly has nightmares about the Joker coming back for her. What I don't get is how depicting a villain doing something is promoting or condoning that something. So, okay, let's say the Joker actually is a rapist... what's the problem, here? He's the villain. Bad guys do bad things. That's WHY they're bad guys. And when the bad guy does something, naturally, you want to do the exact opposite. If a bad guy rapes, that's saying "Don't rape, or you'll be as bad as him!" Why don't the feminists see it this way?

I don't understand how people can't understand that this cover makes sense due to Gordon being tortured by The Joker in The Killing Joke. If people didn't like the cover, no one was forcing them to buy it.

5:50 but he did, then he cuts her to bits and stuffed those bits in a refrigerator, granted it wasn't a very good version of the joker, ask linkara about it - but the fact is that HE IS THE VILLAIN, even if he did it you could write it off as the writers implying that the act is morally reprehensable, but NOOOOOOO, the feminists have to forget about that obvious detail.

There's a cover of "A Death in the Family" which features Batman grieving over a Robin who had been beaten to a bloody pulp. Yet I don't see anyone of these women screeching over that.

I'm a woman and I wouldn't mind seeing another woman in a seductive or sexual position. How do you know I'm not gay, pan, bi, or demi. Hell I could be streight and still like it. However, according to femmenazis all woman are streight and don't like seeing other women look good.

the reason that the killing joke cover was pulled was because the artist did not think that it fit the storyline and did not think that batgirl would look that scared on her own comic cover. the artist also said he didn't pull it because of the pressure it was simply his own editing. kind of like when a scene for a movie doesn't look the way the director wants it to look he edits it out.

Damn you hit the nail right on the head, feminism specifically almost isn't the entire issue at hand here, but rather the idea that it is now possible for any piece of art to be banned or unreleased just because some deem it to be offensive. Where does it end? At what point are we not allowed to express ideas because we're afraid of how those ideas might be perceived?

its the fucking Joker the same guy who blows up hospitals, filled entire cemeteries, beat Robin to death with a crowbar, etc. and that's some of the more mellow shit that he's done, i mean the dude went SANE from going into the lazarus pit

Had no idea there was feminist outcry over this cover, but then again, I'm not surprised. I just thought the objection was over the fact the Batgirl comics tend to be lighter in tone, and that was a fairly dark cover.

The only thing I will say about Joker being an abuser is that he was physically and emotionally abusive towards Harley aside from that he tries to kill everyone for his own gain.

thank you for this video and sharing what was really going, for i didnt really know or understand the full story. I do hope they release the book because DC or every company NEED to realise is that the group of people who are complaining about this "problems" is not their demographic or their fans. I bet every comic fan / DC fan would buy the book and have no problems with the cover. im very confident that DC sales on this comic wouldnt suffer at all. i bet all these people complianing about this picture does not even read comics to begin with, they must not even know that this story of the "killing joke" was already made back in the day. These people are so ignorant that they will say anything and never back it up with research. Just talk out of their ass and what they feel at the heat of the moment or what they feel at the moment, than THINK ABOUT IT. LEARN what it is all about. ETC. in the story there is no rape. so how can it be making young people want to rape. the bad guy gets punnished for what he has done so why would anyone read this and say "if i do bad things ill get punished, i should go do bad things.." it doesnt make senese.

Men aren't objectified anywhere near the level women are in the media, so it's not surprising that the first thing plenty of people think when they see these covers is sexualisation and what not.
I'd agree that instances of male specific gender roles on TV, along with scenes in which, if the roles were reversed, would lead to controversy but are otherwise fine because of gender, (e.g. a woman comically slapping a man, flip that and you've got something that could only be perceived as assault), aren't anything to be content with, but to equate this to misandry in the media appears a little far fetched. I'd argue that the prevalence of the objectification/sexualisation of women in the media has far more damaging consequences on society, portraying them as little else than sex objects.

If I remember correct the writers of the comic book actually pulled it when they were choosing which papers to use as variant and thus lead to the cancellation of that variant, however it was released later on from the book makers, as for when Rafael(If I remember the artist name) also wished it to be pulled during the time of the harassment on the people who wanted it pulled.

I don't get why people keep apologizing for pissing off these wannabe feminists who seemingly have nothing better to do. I think I'd either get mad and tell them to fuck off and that I don't give a shit about how they feel and I'm not responsible for it, or I'd just take it easy and not reply.

Honestly, i'm offended by that Harely Quinn cover. Batman's chained up with his crotch up in the air and Harely looking insane with a mallet in her hands. Looks like she's going to have her way with him, then smash his junk. Oh, silly me! I forgot that to feminists it's funny when a man's genitals are mutilated.

I'm a feminist and I like that variant cover, the artist did a great job, I love art and there should be freedom in artistic expression and honestly I like the portrayal of women in comic books, they're not victims they're badass and who cares how they are being posed or if they have cleavage. Feminists fought for the right to be able to wear what they want because women have the right to and who cares what they wear as long as it's clear that the character chose to wear that and as long as women keep on having these badass personalities x

I don't know, some feminists don't understand that feminism actually means equality of the sexes, not more power over men. Women are sometimes obviously objectified which can be bad, but just because a woman is portrayed "sexily" doesn't always mean it's a bad thing.

If anything I'd say the batgirl cover is more to do with her age than her gender well to me at least. the sense of fear doesn't come from the fact that she's female it's that she's young it would be the same if robin was in her place, they aren't prepared enough to take on the joker type of thing

About the cover, it's supposed to be THE JOKER! You would think a madman who literally dresses like a clown might do something to batgirl if she was held hostage and it's not like he's on the hero's side. You can sympathise with him at BEST.

The Joker is a villain. Even if this cover hints at domestic violence or rape, the Joker IS AN EVIL MAN. No one says, "Oh, DC had a comic where Joker shot someone! They're promoting gun violence!". Anything the Joker does is pretty much a bad thing. So I don't see why this "implied" whatever means that DC is being misogynistic. From the animated TV shows we already know that the Joker abuses Harley Quinn. So while it's not a stretch to say that this cover depicts domestic abuse, there is in no way an approval of that abuse. If batman was replacing Joker in this scene, I might have some issues. But a villain doing villainous things? Hardly head turning.
@Sargumphigaus9 жыл бұрын
In a way, I wish the joker were real, just to see how he would screw with this trend of thought process. Well no,not real, that'd be terrifying, but it would be interesting to see an issue published where the joker were subjected to people like this. I'm sure it would be hilarious, dark, and damn entertaining.

It sucks that the artist has to apologize to these NON-FANS. I'm a girl and I'm not offended by this art. It is a well drawn and color drawing. The artist use of the cool tone colors and isolating the two characters by making them the focal point (with nothing in the background, just black) convey the danger that Batgirl. Being rape by the Joker never came to mind!
