You may be wondering why your tube amp just doesn't sound that good when playing at lower volumes. In fact, it probably sounds completely different!
In today's video I give some tips on playing your loud tube amp quietly at home. While I'm using a Deluxe Reverb, these tips work well for any tube amp that goes from 0-100 in the first digit of the volume knob, and especially amps with a "bright cap" (including most reissue Fenders) where the position of the volume knob determines the relationship of treble content to the rest of your sound.
While this approach can't help you get your amp to overdrive at low volumes, it demonstrates how you can at least get the EQ right by using a simple volume pedal, as well as make get a large variety of other sounds using pedals to make up for the lack of amp breakup. In my opinion, you can get much better sounds this way compared to using attenuators or other methods that will inevitably suck some life out of your tone.
