I was able to pick out the miced up acoustic, was fooled every time between the plugged in acoustsonic and acoustic. Maybe the clever part in these is the pickups are the same, so they sound the same when plugged in?

Went back today to re-listen with my good over the ear headphones. May be the music I grew up with (I'm middle aged) and therefore use to plugged in acoustics, but that is the sound I preferred in every case; and that is what the Fender models and I'm guessing in part for that very reason. I play a lot of acoustic and styles and love the natural honest tone of each one of my acoustic guitars but also love them plugged in and playing for others. That mic in the demo just felt harsh in the mid tones and thin in the bass; so I guess I'd never mic my acoustic is what I am saying. Looking forward to receiving my Acoustisonic Strat to lessen the amount of guitars I need to bring (depending on the location of course). It's not a 12 string and I would not take it camping...... There's other guitars for that :-)

I got to say - when it comes to playing the guitar plugged in using the pickups they all sounded about as bad as the other (except for the Taylor which sounded great). When it comes to recording the acoustic guitars with a mic in front of the soundhole, they outshone every single other recording. I guess all this goes to show that an acoustic guitar will always sound its best when enjoyed the way it was intended to be used in the first place.
@JazzGuitarNoob5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The acoustasonic is great for live situations where you might want access to many types of tones, but it just can't compete with an actual acoustic.

@edhornby48855 жыл бұрын
There's no mistaking the mic recordings. Through the amp is a lot closer, and lets face it, that's the job of the stratacoustasonic because if you were doing the kind of gig where you are onstage with a touring band but needed the acoustic sound for the odd part you'd go for the strat.

This is a great way of making these videos, thanks for posting it! The thing is that for me the piezo undersaddles all basically sound the same and in the first and last comparison it is easy to hear the piezo and mic examples. The Acoustasonic example kind of sounds like a combination of both and I feel that is what Fender/Fishman we’re going for. Basically a sound that is mic-like but will cut and work live. The Taylor guitar surprised me, the ES-2 has a more natural tone than an under-saddle pickup but I actually preferred the Acoustasonic here! I’m hoping to review this guitar on my channel things month and I have to say I’m pretty excited about it!
@dmyers92305 жыл бұрын
Amazingly believable as the real thing plugged in and I never got it correct blind. Your mic always sounded thin with no bottom end which was curious. Plugged in and Fender always sounded better to me. Mine is on order in the first batch! Great review, thanks!!!
@daddio3075 жыл бұрын
Of course the mics sound best! That, if you haven't figured it out, was a given. It was mostly as a point of reference/comparison. The surprising (and it shouldn't have been) aspect was, except for the Taylor, the Fender outshone the other 2 plugged in. It shouldn't have been surprising because the other 2 pickups were just plugged in, whereas the Fenders modeling has already been eq'd and enhanced to sound proper plugged straight into a board. All in all a very Interesting comparison and conversation starter.
@Paschendale25 жыл бұрын
It seemed really easy to tell which ones were recorded using a mic. They sounded the best imo. The pickups were harder to tell, but I only missed the 1st one. I thought they were both the acousticasonic.

The real difference in sound for me is when the acoustic guitars are recorded with the good mic. When the acoustics go through the amp they sound somewhat electric; close to what I'd expect the acoustasonic to sound like.

For me, the real thing mic'd up properly sounded best every time - but into the AER, I thought the Acoustasonic had the edge. So you keep the posh Tayor safe at home for recording, and gig the Acoustasonic...

Got all of them right, enethough I gotta say: Acoustic guitars sound generally pretty bad plugged in (if they don't have a mic inside of them like Matons do) The acoustasonic sounded just to artificial for me, and I'm primarily and acoustic guitar player, that said, it is really remarkable that it gets all those different sounds My conclusion: nothing can beat a mic-ed acoustic (perhaps with a touch of the pickup sound added in the mix), the acoustasonic surprised me with how well it is made and how well it sounds (was expecting a piece of sh*t) but it is still not the instrument for a full on mic + acoustic + fingerstyle kinda guy

Frizor this is exactly what I would have commented myself. If you have to plug in, these weird Fender things are probably useful. I personally think they’re very ugly though, so the slightly worse sounding plugged in real ones are the better choice either way, imo.

I have to say, the Acoustasonic did a fair job of recreating the plugged in versions of the original guitars. That said... if you're going to model a sound, why not model the mic'ed up sound as opposed to modeling the plugged in sound, which is far inferior?
@okspicks5 жыл бұрын
Marc Coté because pickups
@MarcCoteMusic5 жыл бұрын
@@okspicks - I'm not sure what you mean. The sound is of course being picked up by a piezo pickup on the Fender, but it then goes through a modeling circuit. The modeling, however, seems to only make it sounds like a normal piezo pickup... why bother with modeling?
@papersquares5 жыл бұрын
The modelling is based on the live/mic'd sound from the soundhole. Not the plugged in sound. It's just not very accurate. Even with the best pickup, modelling and acoustic amp technology.

I can't claim to have gotten too much right, but at the end of it, I could sort of reason my way to them. Without detailed listening (because my ears aren't that sharp) I felt like the Acoustasonic had modeling based on the combination of piezzo system and mic, so it kinda sounded like a combination of the other two examples. It'd be interesting to have the same done with a blend of mic and piezzo vs acoustasonic. Personally I think the complementary tones of both ways to record acoustic would speak stronger against the acoustasonic, as it might be what it is trying to model, and is the best way (imo) to record an acoustic guitar.
@rodp23105 жыл бұрын
Great way to demonstrate this. Thanks. Would be a lot harder to tell without the back to back comparisons. The fender in isolation would be pretty close compared to the plugged in takes of the others. Biggest giveaway, especially for the Martin, was your playing on the fender was not as fluid - still great but perceptibly different.

Honestly, great test! IMO... the modeling tech sounds pretty good. Not as 'airy' as the real thing, but marginally better than the onboard systems in a lot of guitars, even the high-end stuff! 1st place: mic'ed up 2nd place: strat 3rd place: the on-board electrics I guess the answer is to have an onboard mic/pickup blend~ (for me anyways). Hope you all are having a good day :)

pretty easy to tell which one is the acoustic with a good mic on each trial. However, the acoustic into the amp and the acoustasonic into the amp were pretty close. It is a lot of money for any of these guitars which is the only reason the acoustasonic is appealing. It might be good for someone playing live who wants a few different sounds. The absolute clear winner was the mic. And the loser was the AER. I've played an Acoustasonic Tele into a Fender Acoustic Pro amp and I was blown away by how great it sounded. To me, the clearest difference was amplified sound versus microphone. Didn't miss a one of those. With the Taylor's shimmery tone, the two amplified samples were almost indistinguishable to me. What I haven't heard on any of the Acoustasonics yet, is your basic boom-chick rhythm. When I tried to, I couldn't get rid of the electric-type sustain. Love to see someone overcome that on a video.
@QuoVadis885 жыл бұрын
Because I had my shoulder dislocated, I can only play a Strat guitar with a thin body and a Strat neck. I love the sound of the acoustics but the Acoustasonic Strats are close enough in sound quality and that works for me. The big box acoustics are impossible to play and the big fat necks don't help. And it is also about balance, the strap button for Strats are over the 12 fret. Even a Telecaster with a strap button over the 15th fret throws off the balance for me. So Acoustasonic Strat for sure I'm gettin'.

Got 2 wrong. The Gibson & Martin sounded better mic'd and the Taylor Amped, for my taste. I do want an acoustasonic though. They are so close that its nice to have sound option for different picking. Who couldn't benefit from a 6-in-1 or however many profiles?

I did know each time which one was the acoustasonic...but that’s not the point for me... What was interesting, is I preferred the acoustasonic to the Gibson mic’ed and plugged in...I also preferred it to the mic’ed Taylor and Martin. Plugged in, the Taylor was preferable to the acoustasonic to me by a landslide, and the Martin by a small margin. I can’t believe I preferred it to every mic’ed guitar. That’s insane.

I didn't do so well on the J-45 (and I have a 60 year old J-45 in pretty good shape). After that, I could spot the real guitars when they were mic'd. That was the big difference -- none of the guitars sounded as good not mic'd up. So that worked to the disadvantage of the Fender because it could not be played through the mic only. I was surprised how similar they all sounded plugged in though. So if that's how you're planning on using your real guitars, the Fender does give 3 distinct tones which could translate to value if that's how you choose to go. I'm not a huge fan of modeling but for what it is I can definitely see some folks opting for it.
@RobCmusic5 жыл бұрын
I was surprised at how good the pickup in the Taylor sounded. The Strat sounds a bit more realistic generally than a typical piezo pickup, but you can still hear some of that "plasticky" character in the attack. For gigging I would go with the Acoustasonic Strat. Also I would have liked to hear the Strat mic'd up to see how it fares for recording in a pinch.

I got the miked up ones fairly easily, but I guessed wrong all three times when hooked up to the amp. Coming over the speakers in my iPad, both amped versions sounded...computerized? Over processed? Buzzy? That said, it really impressed me. If I was looking at it from someone who wants the various sounds and played in an amped environment, I think it does well...really well. On the other hand, I like the way acoustics feel in my hands too. I think I would just rather have one good acoustic to play at home for fun and the enjoyment of just the family, but then again, I am not a performer...

The compression on the Acoustic Pickups was the give away.... once you threw in the Mic'ed Acoustic it was much more natural sound (as it should be) BUT the stupid Fender Acous-i-strat deal was GREAT sounding; as good or better than the other Acoustics through their on-board pickups. For performing- noodling around- jamming with friends, 'home' recording and alike the Strat-o-sonic might be the best choice. If you were purely playing acoustic or doing professional recording the real deal is the obvious win. I haven't EVER aced one of the blindfold tests, but I was 9 for 9 on this one. Plugged in, the proper acoustic guitars didn't sound great but there was just a little bit of ring to the Gibson and growl to the Martin. the Taylor simply sounded "less bad" than the Fender. None of it sounded particularly good through the amp. The Martin was the biggest letdown in terms of the plugged in sound. Like chewing a nice, juicy burger with saran wrap on it.

Plugged in they all sounded similar to me, mic'd up was more obvious which were the real acoustics

The Acoustasonic did a better job than the on board pickups in the Taylor and the Martin! The mic'd recordings though were a step above. Interesting comparison though!

Great video Ben! What settings did you use for the selector switch & Mod knob in each clip?
