This bass was not designed by John Suhr. Suhr's only connection to Fender is that he worked in the custom shop from 1995 to 1997, before we went out on his own again. It was an evolution of the US Plus Series Jazz Bass Plus V which was released in 1990 and remained in the lineup until 1994. The Plus had Fender Lace Sensor pickups and a Phil Kubicki designed preamp, and no pickguard, with rear-routing, but was the origin of the smaller body Jazz Bass style, which Fender continued to use up until 2009. From 1995, Fender reverted to conventional pickups, pickguard, and control plate with front-routing, and the pickup dimensions and neck heel dimensions are slightly different, but it is otherwise the same instrument. From 1998, this model was called the American Deluxe Jazz Bass V. From 2004, it gained a 4+1 headstock and Bill Lawrence designed "SCN" (Samarium Cobalt Noiseless) pickups. From 2010, Fender reverted to the traditional, larger body style.

I have a 97 Deluxe from the CustomShop with a fretless ebony fingerboard. It's been a 26 yr love affair. There's no other bass I want.

Great tone!! I have a late 90’s Suhr era deluxe Fender Jazz 4 string (all stock) that is honestly one of the best sounding Jazz basses I’ve ever heard and played in my 25 plus years as a bassist. John Suhr really knows what he’s doing when it comes to being able to capture the organic sounds of a bass in the tone.

exactly ... I love all the 5 in line headstock Fenders .. stock pickup and electronic are still natural yet practical ..

Same here. I also have 4 String Jazz Bass with Suhr pickups. Could you please share at what height do you setup these pickups?

Awesome sound, also didn’t know that the American deluxe also came with that headstock design like the Mexican, that’s always good to know

I agree, I have 2, a 97 (SLG) and 2000 (TR) inline 5 American deluxe basses. Many people don’t like them or their pre amps, I beg to differ. 🤷🏻♂️
