👆 Fender Bassbreaker 30R Guitar Combo Amp - tinyurl.com/y6pdr6q2
Fender Hot Rod Deluxe IV in Black - tinyurl.com/y4xgfw7v
A highly requested video, Rob & Lee pit two mighty Fender amps against one another; the Bassbreaker 30 and the Hot Rod Deluxe.
Fender’s latest addition to their popular Bassbreaker range, the 30R, is a mash-up of the Bassbreaker 15 and 18/30 models. Fender have taken the reverb and high-gain capabilities that made the 15 popular and put it in a 30-watt, two channel amp. With great clean tones and impressive higher gain sounds that you usually don’t expect with Fender, the Bassbreaker 30R is a true workhorse amp.
The Hot Rod Deluxe is one of the worlds most famous and popular amps and has been for a long time - and for good reason. What makes the Hot Rod Deluxe such a popular amp is the fact that it has enough headroom to get a fantastic clean sound at high volumes. In turn, this means it takes pedals incredibly well. It gives all pedals a great platform to truly shine and sound the way they were designed to sound.
Which is your favourite? Comment below!!

When I was in he market for a new amp I tested the HRDIV vs the III and the Bassbreaker 30. I'm a pedal guy, so the HDRIV won hands down. Love that amp. What suprised me though was the difference in the perceived build quality between the HDR and the BB was huge, the BB just felt way cheaper. Just me, or has anyone else noticed this?

@Nintariz yeah, but heavy spring never really plays nice with heavy distortion, hall reverb does. On top of that your argument can also be used against you, look up analog spring reverb pedals and you can buy one of those. And cleans are subjective, if someone prefers the cleans in the other amp suddenly you have a sweep in favor of the other amp.

Weird thing here: With the new Mustang GTX out, I pulled out my old GT 200 and started making up presets. When I tried out the Bassbreaker models, I was drawn to them instantly. They reminded me of my old Traynor twin, not so much the sound itself but the tubey matter-of-fact openness of the clean sound. Oddly, none of the factory presets are based on any of the Bassbreakers. I like the sound of this amp (in the video). Unfortunately, I already have "too many" amps, so happy trails to anyone who buys one.

I had the most fantastic idea for Chappers & The Captain! Have you seen any of these Sound Healing videos out there on the youtubes? Tuning forks, singing bowls? If you added a few candles, put on some 2112 robes, and put someone on a massage table with a couple marshall stacks aimed at them... "well we tried the vox ac30 with a Brian May special but we could tell it wasn't hitting the 3rd chackra so now we're running a les paul through a fuzzface into a 200w marshall. We're pretty sure this is going to clear any chakra blockages..." Brrrrrrrrrrang!!!!!! Cut to the poor subject between 2 massive amps with Chappers & Captain to either side (soft ASMR voice...) "sometimes rotovibe therapy is neccessary to clear away sharp cutting chi" and they both blast away each randomly changing their rotovibe pedal positions causing massive My Bloody Valentine phasing. So many possibilities! A triumphant Anderton's sound healing video could very well break the internet itself! Watch one of these "tuning fork healing" videos that are out there and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I have both of these amps. My HRD is a USA 90’s model. Since getting my 30r the HRD is collecting dust. That said I still like the HRD; particularly with my pedal board. It’s just a pure sounding classic Fender clean. BUT the 30r is just so musical sounding...it inspires me to play differently every time I plug in which for me is the hallmark of a good piece of gear. I also have the BB15 which as Lee says doesn’t have a lot of clean headroom but I still love it too...

Not even really close piece wise but those amps are killer. I would say the supper sonic takes the best of hrd and the bass breaker. You get those classic cleans on the vibrolux/baseman Chanel. And then you get those sweet juicy gain tones. I’m looking to buy the 60 I would get the 22 but I don’t think the clean Chanel has enough headroom to play with a drummer.

HRD drive channel secret-drive no higher than 3. Then crank the master to 6 and up. Sounds tons better. I’ve owned 3 HRD amps over the years. Tubes make a big difference. Got the cash? NOS RCA Blackplates make a difference in the preamp. Currently I have one with 12ax7’s v1+2 and the other has 5751’s in v1+2. Power tubes- I’m using the GT6L6GE tubes that sound excellent. Don’t forget to play with their rating system. I’ve used every thing from #1 (quick breakup) to #10 (super clean). You can hear the difference. Never had a power tube failure. Great tubes.

I own both guys and personally I’d take the Bassbreaker over the HD! It does have less power (30w opposed to 40w) but I feel the sound is better! The only complaint I have of the Bassbreaker is that there is no Level Control for the High Gain feature. I find when you have the Normal Gain Level where you want it then kick in the HG for Leads it’s TOO MUCH VOLUME!! I’ve spoke to Fender and they told me that’s the Number One Complaint they’re getting. So I use an Overdrive instead of the HG in the Amp. Other than that I LOVE the Bassbreaker and would choose it anytime over the HRD. Nice Demo! Please keep up the Good Work and Cheers from the US!

The BB 30R might be my first valve amp. Ive only owned solid state but always wanted a tube amp, and am in no hurry to get one, but this one calls to me, only other one that beckons is a Vox AC15 maybe.

Would love a demo if the George Benson HRD. I searched the channel, but couldnt find one. I'm more into driven clean or dirty blues/southern rock, I'd never use the second gain stage on the Bassbreaker.

Maybe you guys shoud try to use room mics more often when demonstrating amps, I feel like it helps better with getting an idea of the amp's sound (sorry if my english don't (doesn't ?) make sense)

Moreover, while using the room mics, they should talk over them when discussing volume levels. Humans are designed to be able to judge the volume of human voices by their sounds, and, as such, having a comparison between amp level and unamplified voice level would be immediately instructive.

Hotrod for me. I recently part exchanged a Bassbreaker 45 head for the latest Hotrod Cuts through the band sound everytime. Last gig I stayed on the clean channel and used pedals. Im so pleased with my set up now. Have a Katana Head going through the BB212 cab. Amp nirvana for me at this time...

So you mean the Bassbreaker 45 didn't cut through the mix?
@hollandjasper

Moritz Lienhard The BB45 is a great amp but it needed a lot of tweaking everytime i set it up. The Hotrod has been gigged 3 times now and sounds great straight away everytime. Thats my experience I also have the amp on a tilted stand which helps im sure!

SHOOTOUT IDEA Amp gain vs pedals I’ve always been a 2 Ch amp guy for gain, but have gone down the rabbit hole of single channel amp & pedals in recent times. Could you do a vid on this? I remember Rabea talking about only using his Kraken back in the day rather than pedals. Keen to hear if you guys think amps are better than pedals.

Bassbreaker 30r is my amp too. With the channel switching it's able to cover a lot of ground. IMO it's the best drive channel fender has ever made. I've owned a prosonic and this 30r tops it, to my ears

I sold my Prosonic head and bought a Bassbreaker 30R - no regrets ...BB is great with my small pedalboard ... I have a HRD4 that I use with my big pedalboard. 👍😉

Question for Lee and Rob. I have a HRD (3 I think) and thinking of upgrading to the Mk4. Sounds better to me, what do you think. I tend to go for the strat as it gets the 'quack' sound and is great for Sultans of swing. The Tele sounded good here though (I have a thinline). What do you think works best with a HRD? Love the playing and contrast between your styles :)

Love my bassbreaker 15r, but I wish it had spring reverb. I'm considering a Hot Rod Deluxe, actually. I don't like pedals. But the bassbreaker is so close to a bassman that it has an awesome out of hte box tone.

Why the heck dont you like "pedals" ? There are so many different pedals oit there that do gorgeous spring reverbs. And they are very different. I think its stupid to buy an extra amp just to get spring reverb... When in reallity pedals can do it just as well
