This really illustrates well how much of the sound character comes from the 4x12 and the actual speakers used. So basically using a Marshall 412 you can make a lot of amps sound similar to a Marshall

Not really... all three of these amps are designed to sound relatively the same... the bass breaker is designed to be fenders version of the jtm45, and the victory is victory’s take on a Marshall. They’re all supposed to sound like a vintage-y Marshall... yes speakers have some to do with it but the majority of the similarities you’re hearing here is because of the circuit design of these not the speakers

I have a Bassbreaker 45 combo. Changed out one speaker with a Eminence Govner, put all new JJs tubes, and played it for about a year. It took some tweaking but it's the best sounding amp I've ever owned. The $1000.00 dollar price range left room for small upgrades, which really helped me fine tune things. I couldn't afford Marshall JTM 45 at what 3 or 4 grand ? So Fender it is. And I don't freak out about taking to shitty local clubs. To top it off I always have the best guitar sound hands down. Lol Fantastic. amp.

I'm curious about how you say Joe B uses his rig. I recently watched and rewatched several times, while Dan Erliwine checks out his rig and and how he's set up. He doesn't seem to have anything dimed. In fact, I noticed he turns the amps backward and turns the bass all the way off to zero and the treble all the way up with mids nearly all the way up. His volume's aren't even all the way up. This is a recent StewMac video too, so it's likely to be his more recent setup. Presumably since he's been to Anderton's you guys know something we don't?

The Fender Bassbreaker 45 uses two EL34 power tubes and not EL84's. I have noticed some confusion about this before. Even today mid April 2023 I noticed Guitar Center say's the 45 watt Bassbreaker uses two EL34's and then on the same page it provides conflicting information and say's two EL84 power tubes . However Sweetwater only lists EL34 power tubes for the Bassbreaker 45. Think about it, the Marshall JTM45 uses two 5881 power tubes to get 30 watts and the 5881 is a version of the 6L6 power tubes. The Vox uses EL84 to push 30 watts but not 45 watts. The Fender Bassbreaker is 45 watts and to get tose 45 watts it uses the EL34 power tubes. I just looked up the Fender Bassbreaker 30R and indeed "it" uses "Four" (4) EL84 power tubes. Just remember they were reviewing the Bassbreaker 45 in this video and it uses two EL34 power tubes.- Peter age 73

@@lipeguitars Bull crap! I have purchased 3 brand new Marshall JTM45 tube amps and all three of them crapped out within 10 days. I got to believing that my home has electrical issues. Yet I have 15 other tube amps and not any of them have ever had any issues at all. Some of those tube amps cost around $100 new, while my Fender '59 Bassman Ltd. cost me $1500 new and now sells for $2,000. I paid $2500 each time for my new JTM45's and today they are costing $3,000 new. I am heartbroken about the JTM45 as to my ears it is my favorite amp by far and I vow some day to try again and I shall indeed purchase my 4th. new Marshall JTM45. - Peter age 73

I’ll tell you what I like this video so much I want to buy my sheriff 44 back. I wish my 25 would give this exact same sound I like the 25 a great deal but honestly, I kept my sheriff 22 and not the 44 and I do like the headroom on the 44 and certainly there’s no doubt that Was my last Paul. It was a fantastic amp, but I love the master volumes on the 25 and certainly it is better for the house. I had people down the street complaining with the sheriff lol and the 22 is a little quieter, but it doesn’t have the headroom to get those big round Pushed I also learned a new trick instead of using a 2 x 12 closed back if you really want to boost your tone to one by 12s definitely sounds way better thanks. Just thought you might like that tip. I truly do think it sounds better the one by 12 closed back like that the Friedman cabs are what I use and they seem to really push a lot of air without a lot of volumecream backs are the only way to go except scumbag lol love those scumbag speakers, man 15:20

My dream amp has always been a Marshall JTM45! I love them! In fact, I actually really like the cleans that they can do, but I'm not entirely in love with the overdriven sound. That being said, here in Mexico, JTMs are nonexistent, and even if they were, the prices would be insane! So in my endless quest to get one of them, I went into the store decided to buy a Marshall DSL40CR. But when I was there in the store, I plugged into a Bassbreaker 45 and absolutely loved it! I have owned mine for about 3 years now, and it has been great. But I agree with Mick here, I think that the Bassbreaker 45 is much closer to a Marshall 1987 than a JTM. It is very gainy! And because of that, one of my biggest gripes with it is that I can't get good cleans out of it. I can't get cleans out of a Fender because it's too gainy! Still, great amp, anyone mildly interested should check them out. Specially if you are into classic rock like Zeppelin, Hendrix, Sabbath, etc. Also, the price is quite decent for a loud 45W amp that has a built in, rather pointless, attenuator.

Best clean tone I have ever gotten was a bluesbreaker combo in the normal channel turned up to like 6 or 7, analogman germanium sunface, les Paul junior with the volume knob on like 3. I know Jimi and Stevie discovered this long ago but you still have clarity, sustain, and a bit of compression to even things out. People generally think of marshalls as roaring bottom heavy monsters. I think they shine in that clean/dirty dirty/clean area. And the old ones weren't "high gain" the way we think of gain today.

+MB215 These amps were grouped together according to their ability to mimic the original, JTM 45 tonality. As such, their foundations are quite similar-as Mick and Pete either demonstrated or mentioned, each of the more contemporary amps offers features and tonalities beyond that common foundation. The amps you have listed have nothing more than their power ratings in common. What would be the point in comparing them?

Guys, I’m looking for that JTM slight breakup tone and I’m considering both the Sheriff 22 and the V40 Duchess. The first seems more towards a plexi, harder tone, and it’s got a lot of gain I actually don’t need since I use a always on fuzz to get both distorted and clean tones. Do you think the Duchess will work best in my case? Is it a bit more JTMish, especially in voice II mode? Thanks guys

i’m pretty sure the v40 is supposed to be similar to a fender blackface on the first channel. The second channel is more tweedish if that makes sense. Anyways it’s all about your preference, so i’d recommend just going in and trying both to see which one fits your style more. On the v40 though, the second channel does have a significant more amount of saturation/gain. I’d recommend the anderson’s vid comparing the v40, milkman, and the fender deluxe. I personally thought that the V40 was the best sounding out of all 3. Cheers!

Gabe Ziegler thanks for the reply man, yes I guess the v40 is that sort of thing, where the voice II seems to have that sort of early Marshall vibe. Unfortunately I don’t think I have the chance to try neither of those amps, especially in this hard times... Anyway, I still have time to think about the best choice, but thanks again

To me the Sheriff is the winner here, i like it better than the JTM45, sounds a little bit more alive... I loved the Bassbreaker when i tried it in stores but with this comparison i guess it's not as good as i thought it was hahahaha

Luis Coll agreed on the Victory, they all sounded great (the fender was my least fave tho) but to my ears the Victory was a bit warmer and more open sounding than the JTM but it was amazing how close they could get them to sound.

Gotta admit though that fender sounds great when you consider the price relative to the other amps

Is there any chance someone knows what were the settings on the Bassbreaker when it sounded like the JTM?

Yeah but I'm pretty sure the title is referring to the 45 bit, not the wattage

This reissue is 30 watt. The original hand wired JTM45 and the clone kits are 45 watts. It depends on what output transformer is being used. Tube amp wattage output is rated at the point just before breakup, so at max volume they will output much more, some amps as much as twice the rated output. This is why the speakers used should handle much more then the amp is rated for...
