Quick review of the BB45 from someone who has used it for over 2 years: You want Marshall 1987X? You like 80s hair metal tones? Do you want classic Marshall to play Zeppelin, AC/DC, Hendrix, Aerosmith, etc? Get the Bassbreaker 45. It may say Fender on the amp, but it sounds more Marshally than the Origin amps. Do you want the classic Fender cleans at high volume? Then go get a Hot Rod or something like that. The BB45 isn't it. I am amazed at how gainy the BB45 is. I am not exagerating when I say that it can do a pretty convincing 80s metal tone, specially at the full 45W. For a classic rock tone that sounds just like AC/DC you won't need to go past a third of the way up on the volume before you get there. What I also noticed is that the output knob that changes the amp's power also changes the amount of gain it can produce. I imagine that at 45W the power tubes are really working hard. But at 1W, the power tubes just don't get as hot or as much energy so they distort less, even though the output knob is supposed to make the power tubes work just as hard regardless of wattage. It's a really cool amp. Definitely not for home use, even if you stick to the 1W mode. The speakers are fine, but to my ears the tone is a little harsh out of the box. I use an external loadbox/attenuator with another 2x12 or into my interface, so that really helps the tone IMO. If I had to use the amp without attenuation, I would definitely want to put in G12Ms or G12Hs in there, and use distortion pedals for any kind of dirt. Otherwise it will be just too loud for home use. That being said, if you are gigging regularly and want a Marshall sound, this is the way to do it. I even A/B this against a DSL40CR. And the BB45 does classic Marshall way better than the really modern DSL stuff.

To be clear, the 18/35's first channel isn't a Deluxe Reverb with EL84's. Perhaps a Blackface plain Deluxe, as the amp is devoid of any reverb whatsoever, and has no effects loop. If do you want reverb, you're limited to old school, out in front. but then, who needs reverb anyway ;-P

@northof50now7 жыл бұрын
Pete, Mick, how did you get the clean tones from the 45? I picked one up, thanks to this vid and the one with the JTM45. But, my sample has zero headroom. I couldn't get my Strat, with vintage pickups, above volume 4 [on the guitar] without getting drive at any amp setting. I pulled one of the 12AX7 tubes and replaced with a12AT7 which helped. But the term "loud-clean" is far from what I am hearing. Thanks for any input. Love your vids here and TPS.
@michaelbell757 жыл бұрын
You have to keep the output between 1 and 12 wats (9 o clock) and adjust the volume knobs according. The more watts you start adding, the more it will compress and start to break up. The 45 has decent clean headroom but its two EL34s. If you are looking for classic Fender 6L6 or even 6V6 cleans and lots of headroom, you bought the wrong amp. These are basically JTM50s.
@northof50now7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply Michael. I would disagree that it has anything to do with the output control. [my sample anyway]. The "gain/clean" seems to be completely regulated by the Normal and Bright volume as well as the guitar volume. Also found out using either the Normal or Bright rather than "BOTH" input increases clean range. Replacing the 12ax7 tube really helped the amp warm up and removing the back opened the sound. Again, my sample sounds much better with the simple mods. Not looking for classic Fender cleans, but because is is not an array of EL84s, I was expecting some cleans. Having written all that, I really do like the amp. When I pair it with my Deluxe Reverb in a wet/dry rig-- the two are fantastic. I agree with the JTM50 comparison or maybe a Divided by 13 LDW17/39. Again, thanks for the post.
