A is the pedal. It sounds fuller, yes, but the hint is in the extra noise such as the pick scrape, pick attack, hand noise and string noise. A direct signal makes them much more "pokey" with thicker transients which makes them much more audible in a mix. I've found it's a pain in the butt to deal with if the guitarist doesn't have really good control. In contrast, when the guitar goes through an amp into a decent microphone it somehow mellows the unwanted noise and helps it disappear into the mix in a desirable way. Shane is really good rhythmically, so the problem is not as obvious here.

I listened to this video without actually watching. That we finally have affordable guitar pedals that have gotten this close to sounding like actual tube amps is a glorious accomplishment. But I totally get that some guitarists aren't going to be satisfied with anything less than plugging into a dimed tube amp. Its all about upholding the legacy of live playing...respect. The Joyo American Sound is my 'always on' base tone. I like edge of breakup with classic Fender fullness. However, I also like to layer on top either Marshall style cut through or Vox AC30 Top Boost midrange rasp, courtesy of different settings on a Vox Cambridge 50. Modeling has come very far, even in the 'budget' range. I can affordably enjoy making hybrid tones, with Joyo pedals and the Vox Cambridge.

impressive pedal. For me, I knew straight away which was the pedal and which was the real amp because I could hear the air from the speaker HOWEVER, plugging through a PA speaker would obviously remedy this or, if recording, adding a clean speaker impulse response to an IR reverb plugin. very cool

I write without see the older opinions... :-) Absolute amazing! Really really I can't distinguish one from another! The conclusion for me is always the same: today, to record at home or in studio, or to play straight to mixing desk, there are pedals like these by Joyo and many others (Tech21, Carl Martin, Line 6, Ax-FX, etc. ) with which you can sound like a real miked amp. The difference is always the dynamics and sound pressure (RMS) that you feel with the amp very close at home or in rehearsals, and this is still unbeatable by any pedal. But otherwise, the similarity in this blind test is quite surprising. I really have a hard time choosing one of the two sounds. I will say A almost randomly ... :-)

The tell is on the bridge pickup at 1:45 ... there is a little bit of breakup at the high end. I have the American and the trick is to find the balance between gain and voice while not letting things get too gainy or you get the break up. Adore the pedal though. Use it regularly to convert bad tone into good and it even sounds pretty decent live through a PA.

I use an American Sound that I modded to have a switch that cuts out the cab sim (and in that position I added a cap and resistor to dial back the volume and the highs just a little since its much louder and brighter without the cab sim). I run it in front of my Marshall DSL100HR right before the amp after all my fuzz, overdrives and compressors. I am really blown away how accurately I can create a fender amp sound with this setup (tone wise and breakup wise). The A.S. reacts so authentically to volume changes from the guitar also which is killer. I could run the American Sound preamp directly into the Marshall's power amp bypassing the Marshall preamp but it sounds better to run it into the Marshall's clean channel first in my experience. The American Sound works great with and without the cab sim engaged and it's really a shame that mod doesn't come stock. I build pedals, guitars and amps from scratch and even I found the American Sound cab sim mod to be a pain in the ass. Absolutely doable, just a pain in the ass working with the tiny SMD (Surface mount) pads and the tiny SMD components. If anyone owns this pedal I highly recommend the mod but you should add that cap and resistor to balance each setting a little better (ask me if you want the values I used and I'll check for you). The actual Tech 21 pedal this is a clone of comes stock with the option to bypass the cab sim which is how I was able to figure out how to implement it on the American Sound (uskng the tagboardeffects layout as a schematic). Its not a subtle difference but again both ways with and without the cab sim sound great. But some sounds and situations just work better without the cab sim which can make things less lively when its engaged.

More of these video's! Really Good ! I think A is the pedal. The ringing out of chords at 1:50 gives it away. 'A' struggles more with the tone and harshness. B is more relaxed. But I can be wrong, wich I like. Many folks claim the opposite, which says enough about the exceptionnel quality of the Joyo clone.

A has more bottom and less crisp. If, as others have said here that that is the Joyo, then i wonder if (on the pedal) you dialed the bass back a little and raised the treble, whether you would be even closer? Also what speaker (and Amp) are you running the Joyo into? And what guitar are you using?
@jeauxl4051

A is the pedal. I can tell because of the extended low end thumps which you just don't get with a miked up amp unless you eq it in. Also, the Deluxe's voice came thru on some of the single note runs. Can't explain it, but having built one for myself with mostly correct vintage parts, I know what to listen for.

Wow, they sound so close! I reckon A is the pedal and B is the Fender amp, as I can detect a bit of shimmer at 2:04 to 2:07 which made me think which was which (I could be wrong). If that pedal had reverb & tremelo built into it, then it would be sweet.

It's so hard to hear the difference that no one will notice if you used it on a recording. Especially if there's a full band playing (drums, bass, keyboards, vocals). No one will be able to tell if it's a pedal or the real thing. JoYo did an awesome job on this one. Have two other pedals but this is the best one.

I was very positive about the joyo, and I have one and use it as a clean platform for my (many) drivepedals. But the tones at the break up point (clean but not really, driving but not really) are still eluding me. And after listening to this blind test I can tell that I prefer 'B'. By a lot. These clips helped me understand and describe the difference between the two. 'A' sounds like there are two sounds. Clean and then shortly followed by some dirt, but it seems seperated from the clean. Not what I'm looking for. B has the smoothness I'm lookin' for. I keep searching for an amp pedal that delivers this.
@TheDilligan
@TheDilligan 3 жыл бұрын
I think B is the real amp because I know he mic'd it and there is just a little noise on that one, while the DI is noiseless. But as far as Tone, I couldn't tell you. Analog Amp Modelling as opposed to DSP, is really where it's at. I want a 100Watt amp that just has the Joyo American, British and AC built in as channels, then maybe an effect section with tremelo and real spring reverb. Then put the Cab sim on a Line Out/Headphone jack and it would be an unbelievable amp.

i find this stuff quite intriging- cool demo great tool to use and mobility but all of us that have cranked an OLD handwired small tube amp with a drummer know there is no sub (which sadly alot of guitarists prob haven't the opp. yet) my 5E3 jumpered & all dials on 11 or my buddy's old SFVC with all dials on 10 (xcept tremolo) KILLS! Play a note light and clean or strike it into poweramp distortion and yeah i have noticed how the newer simulation stuff now has this somewhat down, but there is something still not right Of course the sound quality is good enough to gig with and the flexibilty of sounds/effects + the mobility is awesome. SO all is good, we just love that power amp breakup distortion -thanks & sorry for the rave

OK I'll go the other way/ A-amp B-pedal. That's just a guess because I can't really tell!

That's because the one the drv has that this pedal doesn't is tubes for a pedal to overdrive

My guesses (I’m a drummer by the way! 🤣): A = Amp B = Pedal They are both good but A has something about the low end (could even be proximity effect from the mic) and a little more open sounding (less compressed?). I prefer the A sound but B is sooo close. If B IS the pedal, I would have dialled a touch more bottom end. The last music example, both A and B sounds are good. Very impressive either way!

Not bad pretty close if B was the peddle because the sound seems to shrink if so lacks a little punch and bite but close

Both sound good, but I like B better (the amp) as it has that legit tube warmth and air that you just can't imitate with a pedal like that. A (the pedal) has no warmth at all, rather it attempts to imitate that tube response - though it does so pretty well, it still sounds flat as it's just a DI signal being affected somewhat.

hey, great video! I'm looking around for an option to use my guitar straight to the PA to avoid carrying an amp and these seem incredibly cheap (compared to a SansAmp GT2 for example) and also seems pretty good for a clean tone (something that I'm also looking for) I only have one question - are you using a soundcard input with a preamp? I think you are, and I was wondering how different the pedal would sound if connected straight to a mixer... any feedback is greatly appreciated! cheers from buenos aires :)

It's not quite as good as a real tube amp. the funny thing is with foldbacks the sound is coming from in front of you rather than behind. Otherwise the front of house sounds like you've got a marshall stack happening :) It sounds quite big on a decent PA system. I use it for one gig we do and no one complained about the tone :) (plus the drummer was loving it for a change haha)

I say not quite as good only in the context of performing live. For recording, it's so much better in my opinion. :)

@@intheblues I want to run a stereo acoustic pedalboard and I want to get these two, a doubler from tc electronic and pan them hard left and right while my acoustic is miced up in the middle. Should I get all my pedals in front or after the amp Sim and then into the PA?

I hear that A is more thick and warm, and B is brighter and a little hollower. That much is clear. Not sure which is which though.

wowh, I thought A was the fender amp - totally lost ... thanks so much for this Video, I will buy it. Btw, it ist the first review-video where I am really sure that this is not an distorsion pedal :-) I watched a lot of videos and was wondering, asking myself: Does it have a clean sound? Because thats what I need most. Thanks

yes it does have a clean sound, so does TC Electronics MojoMojo and Tomsline Dumbler, I just love my Yamaha Pacifica 112Vs: their necks, their nuts, their saddles, their frets, just dont use the trem arm and tune them to Ee a whole octave down and replace the orig springs with a strong and a light and youll be fit forever ...Daddario strings: 009-0115-015-024-032-042, having bought 4 022w s , there might be a slight differnce, luv! Can you suggest any tube pedal / peamp / amp to add to the American sound Joyo for adding the tube dynamic to the sound? (on the cheap side I mean) ps : I play direct in the audio interface

I would say A for the amp and B for the pedal; as I feel A is a touch warmer and fuller. Top blind test - not a lot in it!

Hi! I just have a question. What is the difference between a "Preamp" and "Amp Simulator" pedals? I have a cheap solid state amp (Kustom KG112) and I want to have a great tone. Should I buy a Preamp or an Amp Simulator?. TIA Great review by the way.

Preamps generally seem to be boost/drive pedals, whereas amp sims generally want to be a specific amp sound. So I’d suggest an amp sim if you know which amp you wish you had.

Well when I want to get that DELUXE sound I'm goin for the JOYO. Any pedal that can really approximate a tube amp that well at a cost comparison that is beyond insane has opened my wallet. I cant wait to get the JOYO amp pedals for marshall, mesa boogie, standel, gibson, ampeg, magnatone, hiwatt, etc. so I'll have a whole fully stacked amp room that I can carry in a briefcase!!!!!!!! Oh Yeah baby, at what cost? probably less than a grand.

That's exactly what I did! California for Mesa, American for Fender, British for Marshall and Oxford for Orange 😍 Not sure if I'll get the AC Tone which is supposed to be the VOX. I think I'm pretty well set. This became my stacks and just use a few others, a Tube Screamer, Compressor, Delay, Reverb & Wha-Wha pedal for those few instances 😅 Love that I can get amazing sounds from just pedals that can be directly patched to a PA and it sounds like the real deal. No more amps to carry around 🤣

To me, it seems like A is the Joyo Pedal and B is the Fender Amp, but only because it's more noisy and seems to catch some of the room noise. And somehow, I even prefer the A recording :)
