Part 3 of my Fender Jaguar 1965 Vintage Guitar Repair/ Restoration in my Luthier Workshop.
After installing the new Truss Rod and glueing in the new skunk stripe I have to prepare the neck and the new Rosewood Fingerboard for glueing them together. There is a lot of woodworking going on in this Part of the repair. Everything is done by handwork because there is no other way to get this vintage neck playable again. I will also take care about the electronics and the very corroded Hardware of this Instrument. And I have found something very extraordinary in the routing of the Tremolo....
You can follow the full process in this Video.

I like the idea of that reverse radius slab board over a bent veneer. It seems more stable. And i like the fact that you glued that Tone Bee back into the vibrato cavity. Tone bugs are usually fly's, but a Bee seems so much more appropriate.

It's a fine line, in my mind between restomod and resto, even in guitars and you have done such a fine job. This guitar will go another 50 years, maybe more and while I never really liked the shape of the jaguar... I love this guitar. It's probably because I have a sunburst strat, white pickup covers with tortoise :) To me that says. "Fender". Looking forward to part 4 because one day I am going to replace the fingerboard on my G&L bass and I am soaking this in.

Thank you so much for you positive feedback Tommi. It’s always a lot of brain work involved in such a process… how to make it as good as possible? How to keep the original specs? And also how optimize details to make it work better… Often it’s more a „Gut Feeling“ that shows me the correct way of doing something then the logical analysis of the brain🥴😉 Best Regards Nik

It’s very therapeutic to watch you work. Jaguars are my favourite guitars. It is so satisfying to see the hardware come up shiny and almost new. You made me laugh. As kids, we loved to do DIY with our dad. One day, my brother wanted to polish something up and my dad told him he needed a little polish and a lot of elbow grease. He responded, “Dad. Where do you keep the elbow grease?” Great days. Thanks for posting. I’m really enjoying seeing this gem of a guitar come back to life. Your work is impeccable.

I was interested to see how you made the round fretboard. I once had a hard time replacing the fingerboard of a 1978 Precision Bass. I made a big mistake. The maple near the center of the neck was dented by the fretboard clamp. The truss rod groove was deep in that area, and the thickness to the back of the neck was only about 2 mm. You should be careful too.

The whole slab board thing definately got confusing a few years back, but seems to be coming back around to stability. Ppl use to make it out like they only did slab boards in the 50s and 60s. When reslly the veneer board seems to be more rare. Pretty much all guitars are slab boards now. But ive seen ppl call veneer boards slab. And i just got a mustang vintera 2, which advertises "slab board" in the specs, which is funny because its no different than any other guitar,so its not really a feature. Its just accurate to the time period, but so is pretty much the whole guitar.i use to think the veneer just meant thin, but ive seen guitars with both, that where both thick and thin.i have 3 bullet strats, one has a very thin rosewood board. The side dot markers just barely touch into the rosewood. And one has a normal thickness rosewood board, while the other js actually really thick.it seems the revelation came in the last several years and ppl finally corrected it when talking about it. It seems to me that a veneer board is really quite rare to see or find on any old guitar

Thanks a lot for sharing all this interesting facts Mate. Yes arte totally correct there are a lot of variations made and I always assume Fender made it because of lowering the production costs. But the only guy who really knows the reason might be Leo Fender himself. Best Regards Nik

@@anguslavy9521 Thanks for your Feedback. That's absolutely correct you can't convert a veneer Neck to a slap board neck because the Truss Rod Screw is located in different position... And I also like to keep it original. Would be less work if it will be a flat surface...🙂 Best Regards Nik

When your wood pieces slide around like rubber, thats whats called using too much glue. You want the woods to adhere to each other, not have the neck, than a layer of glue, than the rosewood sitting in top of that. Ppl are always using wayyyy too much glue.
