I traded my Epiphone SG for a Strat about a year ago and realized how much I loved single coils. It wasn’t until I traded my PRS SE Standard 24 (a guitar I’ve always wanted) for a telecaster that I truly realized how much I prefer single coils over humbuckers. I own a 2018 "pre-player" upgrade MIM model and for the price, it's hard to beat. Only issue is that the frets were poorly finished. Fender has had some QC issues in Mexico over the years, but perhaps the most recent Player models are an improvement. But with their price approaching $800 US, there are a lot of competitive options out there at that price point...

About 2 months ago I bought a lefty Player Tele that looks exactly like the one in your video. It sounds pretty good except the high E and B string fret notches had to be filed just a tiny bit (angled downward toward the headstock) so that the strings wouldn't buzz. Also the guitar repair guy found that the Tone pot was found to be a right handed pot, not a lefty. That means that the tone (at its highest) would remain at that same degree of EQ until the knob was put down to around 30%. Then from 30% to 0% the Tone falls off in an incremental rate until there isn't any more treble. On every guitar I've ever owned the Tone knob gradually rolls the Treble off to the bass ... but not this one! Apparently, this often happens with pots that go into left handed guitars. The factory orders a ton of pots and every so often they'll put in the wrong handed pot. And by the way.. this repair guy has an excellent reputation - not some dude who thinks he can repair "stuff". This won't be an expensive fix. But it will take a bit of time for the lefty pot to be found, shipped to the repair guy, and then put in. People make mistakes! Can't wait to play it again as the pickups sounded great... and the feel of the neck is amazing.
@juhatarkka9867 Жыл бұрын
My experience exactly with the tone pot. Easy to fix though with a soldering iron, by reversing the wiring of thd tone pot. I wonder why they use right handed pots in a left ganded guitar though.

Im considering this or a Squire Classic Vibe 60's - I believe they have the same neck profile. My preference is slim Jackson necks, so either way its going to be thicker than I'm used to. If you have tried both I would value your opinion. The extra fret on the Player would be handy of course, but I wonder if tonally there is a clear winner...and if one offers a slimmer neck than the other.

These Player Series guitars really seem nice from the vantage point of a 41 yr old fella who quit playing in his mid-20s on a lefty MIM Standard Stratocaster! 100%! I know it sounds superficial, but removing the "Made in Mexico" writing just made these so much more attractive. Again, I know it's petty, but as a guy w/an MIM Strat, playing w/a guy who had an Epiphone Les Paul, which I didn't know Epiphone was made in China back then🙄, I just felt (wrongly) inferior. And then, I was playing through a '70s model Peavey LTD-400 amp, equipped w/the original 15-inch, 600-watt, Black Widow speaker, & he was playing through a newer Marshall half-stack. So it was always a 'this' vs 'that' kind of guitar setup we had... But it worked quite well sometimes! Josh would play rhythm mostly as I'd solo. He did have good rhythm instincts, man!

@carpathus Жыл бұрын
Why waste money on a Sire t style when you could have a genuine Fender Telecaster? No sense in beating around the bush messing with tele copies. Just get a Fender and call it a day. Specs aren't everything so don't let all the flash Sire specs distract you. And don't overlook Squier CV Telecasters, they are excellent for the money as well. Truth is the Fender logo does carry a lot of weight and Fender guitars tend to hold their value in the marketplace so you can't go wrong.

@Peepeestorm5 жыл бұрын
kakarot247 unfortunately like most left handed guitars that aren’t American made either the tone works as it’s intended but most often if not always the tone knob essentially works as a on/off tone why it’s a thing in left handed guitars? No idea
@geralr5 жыл бұрын
I own one of these player series teles. I actually prefer to play with the tone slightly rolled off, I think it sounds better. So in my personal opinion rolling off the sounds sounds good. To get a warmer tone you have to work a bit but it’s possible. The way I’ve done it is by the strings I used. D’Addario rates it’s string in terms of how warm/bright they sound, I once tried one of the warmer sounding ones and it does get quite warm. So warm in fact, that I replaced the strings with brighter sounding ones because I prefer that sound. So there you go :) All that being said, if you want warm, just get a humbucker equipped guitar ;)
@melvynobrien61935 жыл бұрын
I always remove the tone controls from my Fender Teles and Strats; the pickups sound fuller and clearer with all that "tone" crap removed; all the tone controls do is roll off the high end, and if you don't like a lot of high end, don't buy a Tel, buy something with muddy humbuckers instead.
@melvynobrien61935 жыл бұрын
@@geralr A Tele is supposed to be spanky and twangy; rolling off the highs defeats the purpose of a Tele. If you're playing live, rolling off the high end means that the guitar doesn't come through fifty feet from the stage. You should always have the sound onstage as high end as possible, and that way the guitar cuts through in the mix, instead of sounding muddy. As EVH said, your tone control is your pickup selector.
@geralr5 жыл бұрын
mel obrien I disagree, for some songs it will sound great with tone rolled back a bit, and for others, it will sound great with the tone fully open. Part of the fun of owning a telecaster is that it’s deceptively versatile in the amount of sounds you can get out of it. I don’t think there is a right or wrong way to play a tele, it’s just a matter of what the musician prefers for the particular piece he’s playing.

So is this the evolution of the older "Deluxe Players" Fenders? I have one, a 2008 (I think) MIM Strat w/US vintage noiseless pups. I actually like those pups, despite all the hate directed at most noiseless pups. I always bash my hand like you mentioned, with Teles, so I don't have a regular Tele atm (that's just one reason why not). Just a Dlxe style, which I don't like. Idk, I am in the market for a workhorse Tele, and it sounds great and seems solid. I use a Bassbreaker15 (very similar tone) and this seems like a great match. But the Classic Vibe series seems so well-loved. There must be a reason for that. Guess I gotta try as many as possible! Cool demo/review. Cheers Shane.

When you say "Deluxe players," do you mean the Modern Players? Those were not made in Mexico I don't think, and came in at a lower price. These are the equivalent to the old MIM Standards.

No....it's the replacement of the Made-In-Mexico Standard series; basically it's the older version of the American Standard, but now made in Mexico.

Awsome review and demo as always shane! Still I really think you could make a $20 Kmart guitar sound great 🤘🍻. They do say tone is in the hands. Might make a good video reviewing a Kmart/Target guitar. 👍
