Another 'affordable' guitar grabbed all the playtime this week as we checked out the Fender Squier Classic Vibe 60's Mustang. We all agree that these little 'offsets' are amongst the coolest looking guitars of all time... but do they sound as good as they look?
If you don't like the talking or the playing on this video we've made it easy for you to skip along to the next chapter in case something more interesting is happening...

Hands down the best review you could ever watch on this guitar. I have exactly the same one and have been using it for the past year. It has to be the most versatile and yet underrated guitar there has ever been. There is an a screw to tighten on the tremolo to stop the trem arm falling out and it is possible to get them to stay in tune by adjusting the spring tension. Great review thanks.

@Phil Dale Thanks for comment that's much appreciated... and we have found that screw so thanks to you we may not lose the tremolo arm after all! - will pin this comment so that others can also benefit. Cheers!

Extremely great guitar for the price. Excellent tones. Can get that crisp glassy tone, out of phase quacky tone, and also that smoother smokey tone. Takes distortion(especially on the bridge pick up) surprisingly well too. I just recommend turning the tone down a tad. Recommend using the tremelo bar just for "slight tremolo". HIGHLY recommend using 10 or 11 gauge strings. Preferably 11s but 10 is fine.

Todd Rundgren was very keen on these for a while. In my early days of electric guitaring start of the 1980s I mistook his mustang for a strat and bought a strat type to be like him. I only realised my mistake last year and bought one of this model (in sonic blue). Great sounding instrument; I love it. Sounds and feels very different to a strat. I am trying to set the trem up properly so I can achieve Todd's quite extreme use of it but that set-up is proving tricky despite some YT advice on the subject.

Great review! Just to show how flexible the Mustang is, another player was John McLaughlin (later of the Mahavishnu Orchestra) who played one on the classic Miles Davis albums around '69-'71 so that includes Bitches Brew, Live Evil, On The Corner and, best of all for guitar, Tribute to Jack Johnson. (I'd always assumed it was some kind of Gibson as he used a Les Paul and the SG Doubleneck with Mahavishnu but I was, as usual, wrong.)

Take the time to swap the trem plate out with a fender one and change the nut to a graphtech one with a proper set up and you got your self a damn good guitar that's gig worthy. If you're like me and hate buzz, put some lil 59's in them they sound like the stock pickups just no hum.

Mustang trems are no way POS - the key with Mustangs is to screw the cigar tube down until the bridge is locked and won’t rock and then gradually loosen it until you have the right tension. The Mustang vibrato system keeps tune really well and is very cool. Also there is an internal screw that you have to tighten to keep the arm in place. Another tip is that Allparts replacement Mustang springs are higher tension than Fender ones and make it easier to get tuning stability.

@@elliotvernon7971- Correct. It just takes a few seconds to open a bag and extract the allen wrench. It’s like not plugging a guitar into an amp and then saying that the guitar doesn’t work because sound isn’t coming out of the amp. 👀

Hey D, this is perfect guitar for beginners... or even better choice could be the Squier Bullet Mustang which is half the price and will do all those things but is more stable for tuning. There is also a review of that on this channel. Cheers!

THE TREMOLO BAR NEVER FALLS OUT if you take the included medium-sized allen wrench out of the bag of allen wrenches and tighten that screw that points towards the ground just on the end of the chrome cylinder that you stick the trem bar into. You may not like the trem system, but the bar never falls out if you just take the 20-30 seconds to install it correctly. 🤷‍♂️

Hey Justin, yes it was as easy as it looked really and stayed in tune fine afterwards... but I think there's also some more permanent things you can do if it does prove problematic so I wouldn't worry too much. Hope that helps, Cheers!

1:52 No they're not rubbish when they're set up properly! The tremelo on that Squier is not set up right. The tremelo arm is supposed to be parallel to the body and the tube is not supposed to be touching or that close to the plate. The bar doesn't just fall out, there's a set screw on the side that locks it in place. I think the biggest misconception about the Mustang is they don't stay in tune because of the Tremelo. Ask Todd Rundgren about it! He was a mad man with the vibrato on his Mustang and he could go a few songs without having to tune it using the trem regularly.
