FENDER STACK! Dual Showman Reverb - HUGE GRAND PIANO LIKE TONE!!

Amazing 1976 Fender Dual Showman Reverb STACK! The speaker cabinet features two JBL D130F Speakers. This rig has a sparkling almost piano like quality but at the same time a brutal rock and roll tone. This must one the perfect complement to a middy Marshall stack in a two guitar player setup. We're playing it using a 1978 Fender Telecaster Custom (Single coil and Humbucker) and a 1978 Gibson Les Paul Pro (P90).

This is not a 50s-60s amp. This amp competed with huge hiwatts and marshall JMPs,.among others... Huge stadium rock. The GD wall of sound PA system. 10 or 15 year earlier, yes, your comments accurate.

Growing up I had a 70’s Peavy Musician 400 head and 4 x 12 cab. That thing was just as big and holy cow was it loud! I still have the head and the speakers for the cab. The cab just took up too much real estate and taking it to shows was like asking your friends to help you move. The bass response of that cabinet would rattle the floors and your ears! It was a solid state amp, but man was it crystal clear and took pedals amazingly! Thanks for this Johan. I never knew Fender made such a similar amp. 👍🏻 🎸

kkash72 I had one from the early 80s , I have to admit it sounded pretty good, channel switching, reverb, mine also had phaser and combine, were you could have both channels at the same time, weighed a ton , pretty reliable, but after years of gigs,it started having fuse problems and other electronic bugs, and I sold it to a friend, who still has it, he doesn’t use it , but back in the day it was a wall of sound!

A couple of years ago I helped a friend to sell some of his amps, a Musicman 65-212 and a rig like this. He couldn´t stand people trying to negotiate on a good price so I promised to help him. I sold the Musicman quite fast to a price much better than my friend expected, but the Showman seemed difficult to sell, so after a while he gave me an offer I couldn´t resist, as he knowed I had fallen in love with the tone. My friend passed away last year and now this is one of the things that reminds me of him.Everytime I get into my music room. I still adore the tone. It is as you say like a grand piano, every note really jumpin out from the JBL-speakers and it is hard to put the guitar away because of the glassy sound.

As always, a very nice demo! Great that you include the drums and multiple guitar recordings so you can hear how it sounds in a track. Just got an original D130 for my '74 Dual Showman Reverb (had Eminence Legend 1518's in it) and it sounds great! Excellent description with the 'grand piano' tone. Before I got this one I didn't think a Dual Showman would sound so different from a Twin. Excellent review!

Man, what a fantastic amp & tones! So gratifying to see you two demonstrating this rig! Someone pointed out that this was Peter Green's setup (at one point), but if I'm not mistaken, this was also the same head & cab that Steve Howe used in the Yessongs era (Fragile tour)--would love to hear with a with a Gibson-humbucker equipped guitar sometime. But I must say, VERY cool to hear the Tele Custom--I play the same guitar (Mick Green anyone?)...mine's a '75 w/ maple neck. The P-90 LP is sweet sounding. Excellent groove Johan & Simon! Tusen Tak!

People don't realize how many great rock tones were recorded with silverface showmans and twins. Back in the day alot of touring bands didn't even travel with their own amps when they toured the US, they just used whatever good amps they could rent in the city they were playing in, and they were usually twins or showmans.

He was a drummer and we would play so loud the neighbors could us! It broke down in 2014 (beyond tubes) and I sold the head and eventually sold the the cab as well. It was huge!! Since then I’ve been through a handful of amps. Man I want another silverface amp now. That was my sound.

The real 'holy crap' effect of these kinds of amps is when you're in a room with them. With them turned up loud, big chunky low notes on the neck pickup are just unreal. I've got an '81 Twin Reverb which is the last year of the silverface -135w ultralinear and all that. Some what similar to this Dual Showman in terms of sound and power. I've plugged it into a Traynor 8x10 cab I have here and the experience in the room is just unbelievably huge. It's really tough to translate that to a recording though. Oh and if you put a bass-heavy distortion through them, stand back. Utter madness with the low-end fidelity you get compared to British style amps. Also this DS - JBL setup would sound amazing with bass!

Dick Dale’s sound was a 85 watt brown face era blonde Showman not the later blackface 100w Dual Showman. Dale had a heavier transformer added that became the predecessor to the Twin/DS design. Although, Dale did use a Blackface DS in the late 60s, his famous recordings were largely done 1960-1964 using the 6G14/A blonde/brown amp.

Hey guys, the amp takes pedals very well... and if you do the channel loop trick, even without an overdrive... ! Look out! Having a 66 black face non reverb I may know a little bout it. Ha ha These get very loud, but can also make 12” speakers do good things! I Love mine! ! ! Hey... it’s just Love talk...

Johan, you ever check out Ampeg V4s? Something different from Fenders and Marshalls, and one of the greatest amps ever IMO.

My Fav amp of all time! Next is the Ampeg VT-22 or V4 and them the Magnatone MSeries that had tubes, pitch shifting vibrato, and reverb. The Dual Showman is the gem though. PS, I also dig the shit out of Marshalls too but that a different story!

When I first saw the picture of the fender I thought: nasty uncle Ted (Nugent). And I was not alone. Ted used 4 of these in the mid seventies. Take a look at CalJam 2, he even used 6 🙄. What did you say? 😱
