When I started buying strings in '79-'80 the 8s were standard, 7 were considered light and 9 medium heavy and 10 heavy In the mid to late '80s guys were doing metal stuff drop D and D standard, even Eflat and also wanted "massive" tone so heavier strings became more "standard"

I've got a 2013 Fender Select strat. Flame maple top, SSH, compound radius rosewood fretboard, inlaid into a maple neck, rounded edges, heel carve, locking tuners, big 70's style headstock. I bought in new, off the rack at the GC in Manhattan in 2013. Out the door for $1950 us. It's my #1 now. I also felt that the .09 was a little thin sounding on the Strat so I use 9's but I swap the 9 for a .10. On the E. Fattens up the sound a lot, especially on double stops.

Great video as usual! I love the looks of these guitars, but I don’t know why I have a hard time accepting Stratocaster and telecaster with modern features… About strings: I tend to play what comes stock with the guitar, in terms of gauge. I have 9s on both my Strat and a Tele. I have 10s on my Jason Isbell Tele. And I must say: 10s are a little harder, but they’re more rewarding and the sound seems thicker.

As a Telecaster afficionado, especially those with belly cuts, I clicked on this video with interest. Well, I have to say, having studied the guitars, this finish and colour doesn't appeal to me. Does anyone know if any guitar brand has ever made a horizontal flamed top, instead of vertical ? Or maybe if i'm saying it wrong, a flamed top where the ondulations would be parallel to the neck instead of perpendicular. I'm very curious as to how it would look like.

I would love that! I'm OCD and the fact that flame patterns from each half don't match and meet EXACTLY in the middle, bothers me! 😂 if they ran parallel to the neck then you wouldn't notice where the seems are. Would be much better!
