Great video-- even 3 years later I'm rewatching it LOL! I was one of those guys of the mind that these amps were just too expensive in the world Katana and Catalyst. However after having played the blonde Deluxe-- I was sold-- actually took that amp home with me. Now I'm looking to add either the Twin or the Super... kinda leaning toward the Super at the moment. Unfortunately, none of our local stores have one in stock to try out. Thanks again for the great content!

I have both amps. I love big hall reverb, and long sustains; my favourite guitar is a 335. I exclusively play at my home apartment. I like to noodle down the neck mostly, playing along with my favourite tracks. It’s a tough call, but the twin is my favourite between the two because of the headroom; it has a more robust sustain. When I do go visit family out of town or go to my buddy’s place to play in the city, I do prefer taking my deluxe, but that’s mostly because of the size, and slightly because of the weight, but not a huge difference there. I have been thinking about replacing the deluxe with the Princeton, I just haven’t committed to it. I feel portability is the main reason I use the deluxe, so Princeton may be the better compliment to my twin. **The only issue I have with my twin: the front grill and front face of the circuit board arent as tight to the box, as the deluxe, which is nice and snug all around. I was surprised by this, but it looks like the deluxe is just finished a bit better. I haven’t had this issue with any of my other fender amps; so I was surprised.

I have two TM Deluxe Reverbs. One stays at rehearsal room, other I take to gigs. Great amp! Plenty loud enough and sounds great. I prefer the TM Deluxe over the Twin because the Deluxe weighs 23 pounds, the Twin weighs 33 pounds. The weight of an amp is very important to me.

The Twin, hands down. Here’s the reason. Once you start pushing into breakup territory, the Tone Master doesn’t do well with some pedals. The Deluxe has trouble keeping up with a Loud band, as it is. With the Twin, you can always have the volume to stay under breakup. I play my Twin on 1 watt, at home, with the vol between 7-10. It’s absolute breakup bliss at a reasonable volume. My personal opinion is that, unless it is strictly for home use, the Deluxe & Princeton TM Amps arent versatile enough to be worth the price. I’d spend that money towards a new Princeton Teeed tube amp or stretch for the Twin Tone Master or super

Yeah, seems to me that one of the reasons people back in the day went with the DR was because the Twin was just too heavy. With the Tone Master series, it makes more sense to me to go with the Twin, especially with the power “attenuation” feature.

I bought the Tonemaster Twin Reverb, I’m in no hurry to buy another amp. No pedals, an e335 copy, and it sounds great. Plus you don’t need a chiropractor after you move it. I flashed mine to the Blonde, it sounds great, and the fact it sounds great at low volumes, due to the rear switch 1watt-80watts is a huge massive benefit. I think it’s the way of the future, all things considered.

I’ve been debating between these two amps. The main quality I’m looking for is a full 3 dimensional sound and full frequency range sound. I know the Twin would give me what I’m after, with its two 12s and just from what I know about its reputation, but it is pretty much overkill for the home-use I’d be using it for. The Deluxe seems the more suitable choice, but I just worry that with it’s smaller cab and single speaker, that it will suffer from small amp syndrome; the boxy midrange-forward sound and lack of bass that’s so common to small amps, and that I’m trying to avoid. I’m glad you brought up that factor when you said that both amps have a good 3D projection. That makes me feel a little less worried about going for the Deluxe. I mean I could just go for the Twin - it’s not much more expensive and I know it would have the sound I’m after, but I worry that with 85 watts, even attenuated down to its lowest setting I might not be able to turn it up to a sweet spot and would have to keep the volume at like .5 or something where it would sound thin and weedy, which would defeat the whole purpose of buying a 2x12, full frequency amp.

Great video! I went to the music store planning to buy a black Deluxe and came home with the blonde Twin. Point is you need to try them all out before deciding which one to buy. By the way, I’m a tone snob and the Tone Masters all sound amazing. There’s an almost indistinguishable difference between these and the tube versions at peak volume but these sound better than the tube versions at low volume. Main point is though, you have to play the Deluxe, Twin, Super, blondes and brunettes in person to make the right decision because they all sound different. Hope this helps somebody

Shane, I thank you so much for demonstrating the CLEAN tones of these amps!!! So many "reviews" are stacked with all kinds of pedals, and some of us can't even begin to learn the actual amp tones!! Likewise with pickups! I bought a Tone Master Deluxe reverb almost three years ago, and could not be happier! We play 4 or 5 shows, 6 -8 rehearsals, several hours of practice, and a few hours of picking with other musicians every month, and it has performed flawlessly. The attenuation makes it so I can have perfect tone in any size venue, and then load it effortlessly!! A few days ago, I finally tried the direct out, and wasn't thrilled with the tones thru the PA, but I put a SM57 in front of it, and sounds great!! (This is for using in-ear monitors) We don't play loud, so have never even had call to turn it up to 22 watts (and I play clean 99% of the time). Aside from tonal preferences, unless you play VERY loud, the DR should work fine, and if not, a 57 in front will take care of it!

I am renting a TM twin and was loving it and about to buy it until tonight when I did some recording. I ABed the xlr out to an SM 57 and the XLR is muddy sounding and nothing like the 57 it is barley usable, also there is no real difference between position 1 and 2 on the IR switch. Do I have a malfunctioning unit, or did you or anyone here have similar experience or an idea of how to fix this?
@JillandKevin
@JillandKevin 2 жыл бұрын
@@JaffaRoad Yes, the direct out is pretty weak on my TM DR, but quite easily solved by using a real SM57 and short stand (same cord). Records just like tube version, and the light weight and attenuator alone still make it a much better choice for me (we play two+ shows a week). After changing tubes and dealing with worn out caps, and carrying all the weight for over 50 years. If it costed MORE than the tube version, I still would have bought it, and am extremely happy with it after more than two years of constant use! The ONLY drawback is that my old American Deluxe Thinline Tele's 3rd Generation Noiseless pickups sounded terrible thru it (but no other guitars). I've solved that by building my own (Turbocaster Electric Guitars) guitars, and use EMG Pickups exclusively in ALL my T and JM style guitars. (Best CLEANS EVER!!!)

@@JillandKevin Thanks that is helpful to know - part of the appeal for me was to be able to turn the speaker off and record multiple sources at home with better isolation. I was a bit concerned though b/c some reviews I have watched show only subtle differences between the IR and a real microphone, still even if the IR is not useable the other features are still maybe worth the cost. When you play live do you mic it ? or have you ever found a use for the DI / IR? ( I was hoping to love the DI / IR as much as the other features - but it kind of sucks - which kind of surprises me.....)
@JillandKevin
@JillandKevin 2 жыл бұрын
@@JaffaRoad I haven't actually used the direct out yet. I've tried it on a TV show when we needed to go to the board, but wasn't too thrilled. I've mic'd the speaker a few times when we use our in-ear monitors, but hate having to do all that, as we play mostly small venues (Jill's hearing isn't great). I've isolated my DR in somewhat soundproof rooms when recording, with a 57 in front, which works great IF there's a semi-soundproof room, but that's not always available. I'm pretty sure I heard that Fender has a software update that improves the out and cab sims, at least on the TM Deluxe, but haven't actually tried it, so don't know how good it is. Another thing you could try is turn the attenuator to lowest wattage, and then mic it. Not completely silent, but you can get the sweet spot at a pretty low volume at least. I'm extremely happy with the TM DR, and having the direct out working good would be icing on the cake!! Good luck!!!

I'm about to turn 72 next month and the TM Deluxe has been a savior for my aching back and knees. With a trio and a tasteful drummer, I can use it on the 11 watt setting; otherwise I'm at the full 22 watts. With that said, I do wish they would make a Vibrolux TM. At 40 watts, it would hit the sweet spot of the old Bandmasters, Bassman, Pro Reverb. Super Reverb, etc. In over 55 years of playing, I never needed a Twin.

My dad just gave me his TM twin and it is one hell of an amp. It’s cool that it can be powered all the way down, but set on the highest setting with volume about 5, it just shines like I didn’t know an amp could. It responds really well to picking dynamics and the volume nob on the guitar. It has that beautiful sparkly sound they’re known for. And it is really really really loud! In a good way of course. I’m sure my neighbors hate me. It’s cool I can turn the power down and get a great saturation, but it sounds a little squashed. I have pedals for crunchy sounds so that’s ok.
@steverolfeca

I always answer the “how much is enough” question the same way- how loud is your drummer? Filling the room isn’t your problem, that’s what the DI out is for. But if you can’t hear yourself over Bam-Bam and don’t have adequate monitoring, that’s an issue.

My Marshall valve amps however have the valves housed horizontally thus the heat escapes harmlessly through the top ventilation grill. Now then, where were we 🤔

People do not generally query the longevity of things such as Kemper, Helix, Katana, Roland et al ... So what is all the fuss about the longevity of the Tone master amps? I have had a crappy Vox valvetronix since it came out years ago ... and has been utterly thrashed ... Still works like new, no issues. Similarly, Got the Blonde Tonemaster when it came out ... use it for many gigs ( very unfriendly environments ) and at rehearsals and home ... STILL EXCELLENT, No problems whatsoever. Hi Shane! I haven't had a chance to try either amp. But I enjoyed the video just the same. Your improvisation at the end sounded great. You've always been a very tasteful player. But isn't it awesome how your playing can grow when you have more time to do it? I used my Bandit on my gig tonight with my new Pod Go (4 cable method). I now have a Classic 30 (with a Vintage 30 speaker). The Bandit has the stock Blue Marvel. They both sound awesome! I really don't need anything else. I have an old Marshall Valvastate 50H that needs to be repaired. Once I fix that and get a cab for it I will definitely not need another amp. You should try one on your channel some time. I would recommend pairing it with a fairly dark speaker. They are very inexpensive and they sound great.

I've got a slew of amps, including a RI Twin, a early 70s Twin (sold 3 other ones recently) and now my Tonemaster Twin. It don't sound exactly like my other Twins, and my other Twins don't sound exactly like each other. None of them weigh the 33lbs the Tonemaster does. My George Benson Twin was 50lbs and sounded really good, but it's gone now. Looking for a used Tonemaster Deluxe (23lbs) which will probably become my main gigging amp. My Princeton Reverb (RI western tolex 12") wights slightly more then the Tonemaster Twin. That's pretty incredible to me. I love the XLR out and power reduction on the TM Twin. Why didn't they add a loop since the back isn't exactly traditional?

BINGO! WAY overpriced. They slap the classic name on them and charge twice the money. The Champion 100 for example does more things, looks like a twin, and costs half as much. I’ve had Solid State Fenders, Peaveys, Marshall’s etc from the early 90s to this day and I’ve never had any issues that couldn’t be fixed with a little contact cleaner spray or an occasional blown speaker. I had a Peavey Bandit 112 and a Fender Princeton 112 plus that I regret selling them both. Worked flawlessly for 20-25 years. And now that this tube crisis is happening, tube amps are gonna be the problem makers for as long as this war crisis is going on and maybe even for ever until American starts producing tubes again.

Great informative reviews. I got the Twin Blonde for me the cleaner sound works. It sounds beautiful for home use and out loads of headroom. Man on full on power it will blow glasses off the table. The weight is not at my old back limit to one hand across the parking lot. I wish they made a half twin for grab and go. The Deluxe sound is not my gig although I like the weight better. But the twin sounds so beautiful with all my different guitar types I will deal with the extra weight.

As I understand it, effects loops are for two-gain stage amp architecture. They are placed between the preamp stage and the master volume so gain doesn’t mess with delays, reverbs, etc.. These ToneMasters are single gain-stage amps. There is no spot, electronically, to put in an effects loop. Fender COULD put a fake one in the rear chassis with I &O sockets & an adjustment knob to satisfy the widespread review comments, whining about “no effects loop”…but then real amp builder/critics & electronics engineers would be flooding ToneMaster reviews about such a massive corporate deceit!
@BillMcGirr
@BillMcGirr 3 жыл бұрын
@@rickthomas393 Correct… why put an effects loop in to avoid a problem that doesn’t exist. Just put your effects in the old fashioned way. If you’re using so many effects playing live that you need an effects loop… This probably isn’t the amp you’d want anyway. Any other application and the board will have an effects loop. Instead of having a solution to a problem… People are creating a problem in need of a “solution”. 🤷‍♂️👍🥃

Servicing is never taken into account, how long will Fender have the PCB's available.. The draw to tube gear is the components can always be sourced. When the CPU in the TM series dies, will a new one be available from Fender... will they only be able to be found with a licensed service center? The true test of an amp is how long it will be repairable and in service.
