Right there with you brother. I was 16 in ‘87 and the greatest danger was drinking and driving. While still very dangerous, and I know classmates who were killed doing so, it isn’t the almost guaranteed death sentence for a bad decision that fentanyl brings. I’d probably be dead too…

I can identify 100 percent with Cooper's mother. My daughter was older, and less than a month from her 31st birthday. A person she was dating suggested they try a substance easy to buy off the street. Yes, the worst day of my life was learning my youngest child was gone. Of course the toxicology report listed fentanyl in her system. Only a very small amount kills.

Our government and media seem negligent in this problem. I was recently in the ER and was asking my nurse about the fentanyl problem. He said that even with Narcan, they averaged about 3 deaths per week due to this deadly drug. We have seven hospitals in my city. Do the math. R.I.P. Cooper I've been using marijuana since 1994, so 30 years? I've known since i was 10 years old that pills are deadly and not once have i ever even considered trying anything stronger than weed. We lost our youngest son in 2021. It resonated that your son and mine were very much alike. Adventurous spirit, dirt bikes, snowboarding, boating, motorcycles and fast cars. My son pushed the limits and to some extent felt invincible. There is no such thing as recreational drugs……my son died within 6 minutes- brain dead. The medics tried to resuscitate him, they put him on life support. He was an organ donor, it gives me some comfort that he saved 5 people in 3 states. There is such thing as recreational drugs, it’s just that recently there is an epidemic created by the illegal status and criminalization of said recreational drug use, creating a black market of adulterated drugs advertised as safe by illegal drug dealers… it’s very very very simple , give people a means to purchase safe, non adulterated drugs, and educate young people about the effects of drug use, the meaning of addiction, and what having a better relationship and your community can do to prevent addiction. All these heart wrenching stories are published and nobody is doing anything, it’s like “here look at these people dying preventable deaths” and nobody does anything about it. Alcohol and cigarettes kill people every day and very much legal and non adulterated. This woman stated her sons drug tests after being caught with marijuana lead him to use synthetic marijuana which ultimately opened the door to hard drugs and it killed him.. maybe if he could have just used marijuana as much as he wanted, it wouldn’t have gotten as bad, but y’all old farts who think you know something, only push your children over the edge by not educating them. I don’t smoke marijuana, but I would smoke it with my son if they were interested. I would show them how to use which drugs and still live a somewhat functional life, instead of demonizing the drug use, and letting them die figuring it out themselves, because you’re totally wrong, there are recreational drugs, and most teenagers experiment with them.

My nephew died in 9/19/2021, I believe. He was 18. He was an alter boy, boy scout, football, basketball, and track player. And he was taken by fentanyl, heroin and percoset. He did not even know what he was taking. Used twice, and he was addicted. He went to rehab but wouldn't stay. He mom took him to another place for rehab and psychological therapy. But he went to the dealers place and got some 'percoset' and went home, watched college football. Had a good time with his family. He went to bed, and when his dad went to get him for church, he was dead. He lived in Ohio, where two interstates, 70 and 75, crossed. If you took a 40-mile circle from the intersection of 70 and 75, the teenagers that have died in a classroom each WEEK!!! Like you, his parents used education, 5-k runs, they will talk to the schools, private meeting, anything they think will help. I l8ve in Florida and we have fentanyl busts all the time. Maybe we should bring this to the top of the platforms during the presidential campaign? 18:47 18:47

My heart goes out to this wonderful mother. My firstborn died in a similar situation. There was more than one person who was also indulging in the drug of choice, but it was my son who died. His friends called the paramedics and the paramedics said all of his vital organs began to shut down, and he died. He had told his dad, that he wanted to get into a rehab program and he wanted to have that one hit before he went into rehab, as irony had it, the rehab called a couple of weeks after his death stating that they had another bed available, obviously, it was too late. That was twenty-one years ago, but I have written this to let you know, that I understand your pain of losing a child, God has sustained me through all the pain of losing Gerran and my second-born son he was just seven years old due to a major medical condition. You see, I know what you are saying, and the tears that fill your heart. God cares. Trust Him, and delight in Him and the Lord Jesus will see you through many soul-searching days. I know, I've been there. Psalm 3:5-6

weed can trigger psychosis in a small population ,even when it isn't "laced" did u have him drug tested to see what else was in it? I experienced psychosis or what has been called a "bad trip" at 13, my mom took me to the hospital thinking it was angel dust or cocaine, nope, straight THC. it was just strong and I react extremely adverse to it. to this day I dont smoke ive tried and every time is absolutely awful. so sorry for your son. Feeling your grief through the screen is painful, yet you are so well spoken and informative. This is what we need to get out. This is an epidemic. No one is safe. The withdrawals play games with your mind and body. I was addicted for 10 yrs and wanted to stop, but the withdrawal was devastating. Once you get the medicine (which works very well), you can begin to refocus on daily life. Your young, so take advantage of that strength.

I truly think people should have some compassion for the fact that a lot of people who don’t use illicit drugs don’t know about “street” drugs. I was an opioid addict for over a decade and have been sober for 13 years and back then I didn’t hear a word about synthetic fentanyl I only knew about prescription fentanyl. Also many people in my family did not understand a single thing about my addiction or drug use only what they were learning as they were going through my addiction with me. My doctor who specializes in addiction told me that in his formal medical school they talk about addiction briefly during one class he later took a specialty degree in addiction. Thankfully information is being shared more and more to educate people. My condolences to this family for the loss of their beautiful son and sibling.

I have two teenage sons. They think they know more than me and dismiss me when I try to talk to them. Hardheaded AND addiction run in my family. There was a kid I grew up with who died to fentanyl OD. Nick McGinnis. We weren’t friends, but in our small town everyone knows everyone. I was close with his brother because we worked together for years at the local pizza shop. we lived in the same neighborhood and rode the same bus from primary to high school. One day he just disappeared. I was a senior at the time, he already graduated. They found his body in the trunk of his own car in a different county. His friends freaked and did that, instead of call for help. It was extremely disturbing and rocked the whole town. I think about him from time to time and it makes me sad cuz all I remember is a really goofy crazy kid who’s now forever young.

I do not understand why more is not being done in relation to the drug problems from the state's side. It is as if the state is putting all the responsibility on parents and families, instead of making sure that these dangerous drugs are not so accessible and easy to get hold of for young people. And also the importance to cooperate more with parents and families of the young people who have drug problems.

My son is 22 now but he to has always been so motivated,walking by 9 mths.He loved taking apart things to see how they work.Finally he figued out how to put those things back together by 5 yrs.He moved to Kentucky at 20 to work.i still worry about my baby boy of 4 childen every day.He still uses at times like a pain pill or weed.Just because of this epidemic,Him being so far from N.C and my own Ptsd goes in overdrive if he doesn't call me for our regular call times.we are best friend and i talk openly with him about any drug abuse and my fear.I cried with you and wish i could huge you and im so hurt and so sorry for you.i hope i never feel your pain.Bless you and thank you for sharing his and your story.

My grandson is 16 and he dropped out of high school in 10th grade to do homeschooling after the second gun scare in his school by his own volition. At the time I feared he was going to miss the wonderful high school years. After listening to these stories I am so relieved. My grandson is a little bit sheltered and not as Street Smart as I was at his age but thank God he has no one in his world to give him a pill. He and I discuss this a lot the danger the cartels that do not care how many they kill and this countries inability to catch them or prosecute . There are so many cartels I can understand the difficulty , but I must say this. A lot of this fentenyl is comming out of china , we do business with them and it seems most of our American merchandise is made by them. China knows including Covid what they are responsible for . Our government does not seem to care to shut down trade with them to stop at least in this area the transferring this crap out of there country .
