Feral cats are a completely different animal than a pet cat. They are very viscous predators that will destroy small animal populations.
@michaelcauser474Ай бұрын
I agree 100%. At one time I had a mob of a dozen or so pet cats who lived in their own large shed size wire mesh cage with a proper peaked roof and wind protection. They were so happy in there that even if you left the door open accidentally they could not be bothered with getting out. The cage was to let them have space without getting bowled over by cars or attacking the local small wildlife. Feral cats are not in the same game. They are just plain nasty. Go get the buggers Sir.

@@gamedog1snapper. My friend, please note my comments in full. They lived in a large shed size cage for exactly that reason, plus to avoid them getting run over on the roads and annoying my neighbours. I had lived in a spare house on a farm for a few hears and I knew exactly what damage a loose cat could do to the local wildlife even in the suburbs. Some of my cats were actually strays that I was able to catch and re-educate, and NONE were allowed out to play except the odd trip into the house. None were ferals as they were too sneaky to allow themselves to be caught alive, and too dangerous to try to do it anyway. As a side line, the cage was 2 metres wide, 4 metres long and 2 metres high plus a high peaked roof with flooring under the roof and in 2/3rds of the lower area , to give them more room to play.

I'd be tempted to warn the owner, and if there is no change to that situation, to slip a few 10-80 baits over the fence. It's probably illegal, but domestic cats can do just as much damage to wildlife as ferals. They need to be kept inside their owners' houses, especially at night.
@kionsplace3869Ай бұрын
Trap them as nuisance animals, have the cats trapped and sent to the shelter or pound. If they get bailed out, you could always trap them again and find a different way to make sure they don't come back. Best of luck.

I had a similar problem with the new lady next door - 2 cats, always allowed to wander at night, I'd often find it's pawprints all over my windscreen in the morning. Luckily, the 3.5 metre python that lives in my little rainforest grove on my back fence solved the problem for me!! I didn't tell the cat's owner, she has no idea, just thinks it ran away. She keeps the other one inside now.

I just found your channel and what I saw was great and thank's for getting rid of these invasive animals. I spent most of my childhood in far East Gippsland, the birdlife was incredible, Crimson Rosella's being my favourite, up to 30 in a flock. 25 years later I took my kids up to the place I loved (and still miss today), on the way from Buchan to the farm, I counted 30 ferral cats in the one and a half hours drive with a total of 130 in 3 days, all in daylight hours, Crimson Rosella's? 5! I'm not bloody kidding. It was hard to spot many other small bird species it seems as they have also been decimated by the cats, it broke my heart. Keep up the good work and if you can change one persons attitude on ferral cats from poor pussy to murdering bastard you've done a great service to conserving Aus's amazing natural wildlife. All the best.

I had a feral cat on my farm a few years ago here in Tassie. Unfortunately the rifles were nice and cosy in their safe at the time as I wasn’t expecting the intruder. The bas+@rd was about 40cm tall at the shoulder (he walked past a 1.2m gate and his shoulder was at the 1/3 level on the wire to give me the scale), jet black with a panther like face, but quite snub-nosed in profile. There is an old myth here in Tassie about when they closed the old Beaumaris Zoo, they just let the beasties go as they had no money to send them to other zoos. If I were a subscriber to that tale, I would have sworn it was an escaped panther’s descendant I saw. The ferals are getting bigger and stronger, and are phenomenal predators.

Outdoor cats suck. I've always had a cat and it's always been indoors only. People that have domesticated cats for pets that let them outdoors aren't thinking about the fact that they're expecting everybody else to let them use their yard as a litter box. Not to mention all the murdering. I have backyard bird feeders. I enjoy our outdoor critters and don't want my bird feeder used as bait holders(unless it's a hawk stopping by for a snack that was cool to see). Taking care of those feral cats is a service to everyone. I don't think enough people understand the situation. Good call out for awareness! People need to learn to look outside their own bubble of experience. Keep up the good work man.

Bless you, cats are a huge problem where I grew up. I've copped a heap off people for culling feral cats but I love our native animals they need protecting.

In 2000, having my sunrise coffee on the veranda, in the Kilmore East valley (Victoria, sheep farm) I fleetingly spied out of the corner of my eye a huge jet black feral cat, It was about 100m away making its way to a bramble patch. I swear it locked eyes with me as I turned my head towards it. I decided to not go strolling in that direction since the kitty was the size of a dog.

Good job Australian wildlife thanks you. You should make a Daniel Boone style hat out of the big cat wear it around Sydney.

Cats can be great pets, but they belong in the home, not outdoors.

First time travelling through the back of NSW and into SA. Couldn't get over the goat problem. No wonder its a battle to raise pasture stock.

I absolutely agree about the feral cats. Having a pet cat I’ve lost it a couple of times when it has caught a bird. I’ve disciplined it so it doesn’t anymore
