My interpretation was he was born of nature (coming from the tree), then man found him and tried to shape him to his will. When he turned to wood, I saw adaptation, yet as soon as man returned to the picture, he touched him and saw the darkness inside and sought to return to nature. As he returned to nature, breaking into all that the air touches to bring life, there was this reminder that nature will not be man's slave, that nature will overcome in the end. Who knows if that was the Author's theme, but that was how I interpreted it.
