These videos have been really valuable for me. I’m no mechanic, but I’ve just successfully replaced the RH diff carrier bearing thanks to your demonstrations. I didn’t have a clue where to start before seeing this. It all started with an oil leak from the 3pt linkage pin and then the job just got bigger and bigger as I dug deeper 🙂. Mine is a 1952 TEA20 that’s been in the family since new. Thanks Lance

G'day mate gee that little Fergey is as old as I am 61! Interesting that the bearings are timken that are bloody good bearings that's why they have been used on steam locos to today's modern diesel locomotives on the bogies good one lance John

G'day Lance. That one will be good as new when you get done. Do you sometimes get the urge to run out and plow 40 acres before tea time?
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 6 жыл бұрын
Well I only have 8 acres so I have to dismiss those urges,

G day Geoff, I just use a good automotive wheel bearing grease on the internal parts and a light oil on the dovetail.

I am wondering how the correct play between the crown wheel and pinion is adjusted. I am very interested how you will reassemble the diff.
@BundyBearsShed

G Day Hans, I just went through the manual and it said it can not be adjusted as there is no provision for shims etc but it is possible to fit an extra trumpet housing gasket if needed. We will not be removing the pinion shaft that I am aware of at this stage.

I am surprised. The wrong tolerances between crown wheel and pinion made my MGC rear axle sound like a grain mill. So I gave it to an expert to adjust it with new shims. I was not confident to succeed on myself. Maybe the rock solid design of a tractor's diff is less sensitive.

I recognized your very reasonable explanation that the bearing load on the left hand side is typically higher than on the right hand side. And I remember an issue in my railway industry where gearbox bearings died because the gear ran at full speed with the coupled elelectric traction motor switched off due to electric reasons. (We had still 5 remaining drives in operation.) Bearing rolers under load intend to do what shall do. They roll. Bearing rolers with no load tend to slide instead of rolling. That is one of the reasons for excessive wear. Bearing producers can tell you the reason for death if you show them the candidate. So the theory could be: Too much bearing tolerance. Or a normal death because of age, since roller sliding is the "built in stress" on the right hand side. Best regards Hans

Where are the safety thongs while you were welding? You Aussie blokes are supposed to be tough. I don't want to see a picture of you in a different kind of thong though, thanks all the same. Enjoyable series thanks Lance.
