I like her standup but it kind of feels like her original debut happened before she was quite ready. She seems to have struggled to have fresh material at times. For what it's worth I expect this is not an uncommon problem, and one can't control when the lucky break happens either, but it can make things a bit awkward.

The joke setup itself is just a sideways dig at the fact that laws used to consider first father and then husband the person with ultimate say over a woman's agency, and instead of lingering on that, she just ran with it and trusted the audience to get that this isn't actually the case.
