In my opinion it's ment more as lightning(fast) strike instead of a lightning(bolt) as warriors don't posses magic. You could probably compair it to something like Martial Arts from other stories/games and I almost certainly agree that it's the one he trained on the cliff or a similar one.

"lightning strike" is a close translation for Stark's "Seiten Geki", but not exactly the same. There is a word "Seiten no Hekireki" in Japanese. "Seiten" means clear sky. "Hekireki" means lightning. Meaning "a lightning through clear sky" (Lightning doesn't occur in clear skies. So you use this word when something appears or occurs suddenly and you get shocked by that). Stark's "Seiten Geki" means "a strike through clear sky". I never read the manga, but it's probably an attack using Stark's full muscles and weight and his big axe striking down so fast. Linie probably didn't realize she got slashed by Stark until she dies. It's the same strike when Stark defeated the Dragon.

Actually she successfully countered the 'lightning stike', as she memorized Eisen's move from his prime age. But while she imitated Eisen's superior technique, her hit wasn't heavy enough to deliver a lethal blow or completely prevent him from doing the 'lighting strike'.

The thing is Frieren has more magic spells than Fern but Fern excels on being efficient on magic. The faster Fern does everything the faster they can make Frieren move to another place. So Fern is trained to be very efficient in doing everything faster than Frieren can. Frieren is basically multi skills mage while Fern knows fast casting. While Stark is trained to be tankier and sturdier than Eisen. Because Eisen knows Stark can outlast anyone on the battlefield and can even overpower then. Its like Eisen made a Tanky Warrior out of Stark, since Eisen is a Heavy hitting Warrior himself.

I love Stark's finisher. They portrayed the speed of his attack very well. There is a frame holding up the axe and a second frame where he has already completed the strike. There is absolutely no animation of the strike itself. Magnificent

Fun fact: in case you missed it, the knight with the cape is actually Graf Granat's son. Also the Lightning Strike is the same technique that Stark was practicing on the village's cliff before he killed the dragon.

The difference between imitating and learning. Neither Linie nor Stark is suited to fight the exact same way Eisen did - Eisen is a dwarf, pretty much a block of granite with a beard. No human or demon can match his toughness or build. But Linie just copied his fighting style anyway, even though it doesn't suit her abilities. Stark learned that fighting style properly and adapted it for his human physique.

To go a little deeper than that, she only used attacks with momentum using body rotations on stark the whole time, downward slashes and side slashes. The attack Stark meant to tank was an upward slash with minimal momentum. Small detail, however it is there.

Stark has some pretty good battle instincts, but he has too little confidence in himself. He actually chose the best move to win that fight. Having seen this scene so many times in reactions, something I noticed is Linne, for all that she copied Eisen’s technique, can’t really control it like he would. Whenever she summoned that axe, it always takes her a moment to get it under control; usually she uses this to start spinning it around and building up momentum to add weight to her attack, but if you’re looking you can generally see it drop for at least an instant. Furthermore, each ‘heavy’ attack she landed on Stark was a downward chop, generally after jumping, spinning around, or both, all to add more momentum and weight to the blow. Now compare their final clash: _Stark_ ran in and went high, forcing her to swing that heavy axe upwards, with no real time to gain any momentum before hand. Since she’d been beating on him the entire time, she figured she’d just knock him away again, or just kill him outright, but this was literally the weakest attack she threw during that fight. All because she insisted on beating him with his own master’s technique.

some play with the names, most of them are german words: - frieren - to freeze (a bit of a cold personality, so good match to the name) - fern - remote / distant (suits her well) - stark - strong (while true I don't see the strength yet) - himmel - heaven (funny to visit heaven in heaven) - eisen - iron - heiter - bright - flamme - flame - lügner - liar (also good match to the personality) - draht - wire (and uses wires to kill...) - linie - line (in a way she is pretty simple like a line) as for the anime: originally I thought it's a bad idea, following the char after the demon king is dead, but after watching the first episode I was hooked. Easily the best in the last few years. I like it a LOT more than any other including beloved hits like 1piece, demon slayer.

It's funny that you say that Stark is mad out of Iron. His name is German for Strong while his master Eisen's name means Iron. With Eisen being frightened of Stark we see that he is Stronger than Iron. With more experience he will be, like Eisen told Frieren, an incredible warrior. (Others have posted the translation for several names before.)

Stark is on par with present day Eisen. But the demon girl memorized the movements of Eisen in his prime. So Stark cant beat her at speed/techniques. But her body is weak af. So moves/counters that are supposed to be insta-kills just leave behind deep wounds. She successfully countered the 'lightning stike', but her hit wasn't heavy enough to deliver a lethal blow or completely prevent him from doing the 'lighting strike' move.

The lady demon Stark fought made the mistake of choosing whose style to copy, Eisen's style relies on his brute strength, while she does not seem to have much strength herself. She probably would have done better with a short sword, rapier, or daggers. Just personal anime-only observation, no manga or LN knowledge here

The whole episode's directing and storyboarding was made my Kouki Fujimoto, and it was his first time doing it for an entire episode. Fujimoto animated a large amount of stuff. For reference, he animated JJK's Maki raising his glasses in the 1st OP, Megumi's running and demon dog sequence in the 1st ep, Chainsaw Man's the part where they're dancing in the OP, Denji running away from the zombies in the 1st ep, a big amount of MHA's S3 like Red Riot's episode and especially Deku vs Gentle Criminal.

The huge mistake Linie that mimicing warrior she can only mimic skill only. and that why Stark flashback hit so hard. what makes you warrior is not about skill, but about way of fight, a phylosopy of warrior, a role of warrior, A tanker. warrior never fight for win, warrior fight for buy a time to cover and tank. and by those Liene lost by raw stat. Even she land critical hit she can not penetrate stark. even on any game you chosing warrior because of raw stat not skill.
