Yes, there are some still out there but unfortunately, due to new vehicles being so complex, one issue could be caused by any number of things. There are so many sensors that are supposed to help you but often don't. I saw one video years ago where an error code was being generated, the mech tried everything to fix the issue....know what the issue ended up being? The sensor itself.

THe point about the tap and die: too right! When I built my cnc I used them constantly as I built brackets, and motor mounts and braces. I made myself a little holder for the proper bit, and tap so whenever I needed one, the drill and tap were together. To be honest, I have yet to use a die lol....I bought a mastercrap set and haven't even put one into the handle after 5 years hahaha There's a chart online you can download (if your set doesn't have one) that shows the right drill size per bolt/thread/pitch. I stuck it to the side of a metal cabinet for easy reference. You are 100% correct: one of the most usefull skills a person can have. Oh yeah, I've also used them on wood, mainly maple, you'd be surprised how well maple, elm, ash take threads.

Nice work Lou. Looks like the powder coating is getting better. The next time you order powder also be sure to buy high temperature powder coating masking tape and rubber plugs. It makes sealing off holes and areas you don't want to paint a breeze.

May I suggest using hydraulic assembly lube instead of brake fluid for installing the pistons and seals? It won’t absorb moisture as the part sits awaiting final assembly of the car, brake fluid is extremely hygroscopic and you risk corrosion starting before it’s ever used.

thanks, cheers.

@maxandfergus3 жыл бұрын
@@LouTrottier I guess my question is, would you even know if one of your pistons was seized? Seems to me that the other side would just travel twice as far.
@ferrariguy82783 жыл бұрын
@@maxandfergus Since this caliper doesn't float, only one side would apply the pad. Likely pulling or dragging would result... then eventually leaking.
@muskokamike1273 жыл бұрын
I always wondered why pistons would seize into a caliper. I thought "hmm they are being coated by brake fluid so why"? I see now there's in inner and outer seal preventing the fluid from seeping around the piston itself so you have metal on metal. I thought there was only an outer seal. What do you think of the phenolic brake pistons?
@LouTrottier3 жыл бұрын
Never heard of this oistons.
@ferrariguy82783 жыл бұрын
Brake fluid is hydroscopic, so over time if left sitting it just sucks moisture out of the air, and eventually so much it lets corrosion happen. Dirt nicking the seals can do the same thing. Phenolic pistons would be interesting to prevent heat transfer only IF they wouldn't eventually crack/shatter, and IF they could withstand the temps experienced over time. Longevity would be a big question.
@muskokamike1273 жыл бұрын
@@ferrariguy8278 I hope so, I installed calipers with them in it lol Thanks for the info about the brake fluid, learn something new everyday! That makes total sense how they can therefore corrode and seize.
Phenolic pistons are made from a composite of Bakelite and other compounds, they are typically used in 3/4 ton and larger trucks and some large SUVs to insulate the brake fluid from the heat generated by braking those vehicles. The downside to them is the outer coating wears off after 60k or so miles and when the fluid penetrates them they swell and can seize the caliper. Replacement phenolic pistons are cheap, never replace them with steel pistons.
