Hi Scott, the flap thing is a filler hole reducer and it dates back to when there was still leaded fuel and unleaded, It was to stop leaded fuel being used in unleaded cars as the leaded fuel pump nozzles were a larger diameter and wouldn't fit in
@Ratarossa
@Ratarossa 5 ай бұрын
WOW really that would make sense, do you think that would have been fitted to this 1982 ferrari though ?

@@Ratarossa probably not! others have mentioned spotting a Mercedes symbol on it. That is where I recognised it from. I had one on a 2004 Mercedes, I believe it was to protect the catalytic convertor

@@Ratarossa It could be a trap door for an internal fuel collector. Basically allows fuel in to the collector and then shuts when it tries to flow back out. The internal collector helps to prevent fuel starvation when you go round corners fast as the fuel pump sits within the collector. They look a bit different now but the principle is the same. There's a company in Bletchley called Aero Tec Laboratories, they sell them, they're called non return valves on their site, they sell level senders. tooo They might even have replacement tanks for you
@paulwalker993RSR
@paulwalker993RSR 5 ай бұрын
@@coxynut The one on my Mercedes was just under the filler cap and I assumed it was to also work as a valve to stop fuel spillage on tight corners with a full tank? Anyway it came loose and out of line making it difficult to put in the nozzle so I ripped it out one day in anger and binned it! LOL

@Ratarossa For the US in 1982, for sure that flap would be used. Leaded fuel was not phased out here until 1996, so it makes perfect sense that flap would be there. Best of luck!

If you've got one hose that split open because of it's condition it's probably a safe bet that every other hose on the engine is in similar shape and is just waiting to fail. Probably not a bad idea to replace all of them, along with the radiator cap and thermostat, just to give the cooling system a fighting chance of working properly for more than 15 minutes at a time.
@jkotsovolos
@jkotsovolos 5 ай бұрын
Thermostat! Thermostat! Thermostat! Change the thermostat before you blow the engine. You're pretty lucky that the hoses keep blowing, because they are old. That way they prevent the engine head gaskets from blowing or even the coolant radiator. If you change all the coolant hoses with new ( strong ), the next thing that will blow is the engine head gaskets. Do not take any risks CHANGE THE THERMOSTAT. Godspeed to you.
@gordoncompton3014

I would be inclined to agree, at least this traditional style stat can be dropped into hot water to see that it opens correctly. Also a pressure test if it were mine just to confirm the system is 100 percent sealed

Welp, at the end there I really felt for Scott and his struggles with that gas tank. Because I’m pretty certain that at this point, if it’s the head gaskets going, then it’s gonna become an engine-out rebuild. The silver lining being, it hopefully won’t turn into a full ground up rebuild and is something one can probably do in their work barn.

These Are the exact symptoms i had when my old BMW had a headgasket leak. Leak was small enough to not cause creamy oil, but it pressured the coolant system which caused hoses to blow. USE a CO2 tester in the coolant reservoir or just look for bubbles (exhaust gss) in the reservoir with the cap off.

I'd say modern cars are far more of a pain in the arse, especially as im doing it for a living. If I had a choice if rather work on things like this as opposed to engines half made of plastic and engineered to last no more than a couple of years. We live in a disposable age as opposed to being able to strip a part and service it at a component level. Even things like alternators are now an exchange replacement, no parts for it for repair such as regulator rectifiers, or brushes, bearings. Just replace a complete unit with another. And the amount of warped plastic housings I've found over the last few years is a joke. So sad how it's become, especially as we're meant to be in an age of being kind to the environment and recycling. Just toss it in the skip and move onto the next job

Eventually it well to a really knowledgeable audi tec and he found the banjo bolt that go into the fuel metering head for the main fuel filter had a tinny little filter in that was blocked. Looking at what you have just taken out of your tank I feel it will have the same types of small filter to protect the system.
