Ferrari 348 - The Cold Shift Myth

I had the cold shift issue when changing from 1st to 2nd initially, but after changing to Redline 75w-90NS shifting has improved drastically. If you give the synchros about 1/4 of a second to spin up, you'll have perfect shifts every time without ridiculous methods such as having to skip gears or let the car warm up before driving.

Palm trees, sun... Outside temperature and car sleeping in a warm garage helps. Try that with zero degree celsius in Europe on a 348 sleeping in an underground garage : ) +1 on the vid but there's nothing "ridiculous" about switching from 1st to 3rd for the first few minutes: that's how many owners of old Ferrari do it since forever. On my 1992 348 I do skip the 2nd when it's cold (haven't tried the oil you recommend that said), no matter how slow I go between the gears. Even "double clutching" (don't know the term in english) doesn't help (going from 1st gear back to neutral, re-clutch, try 2nd gear). Only thing that works is 1st to 3rd.

To be honest I didn't have colder winters in mind when making this video (close-minded, I'll admit), but it's awesome that you still drive it in those temperatures and don't tuck it away for half the year. I would do the same. If you do try the Redline oil, I'd love to know if it made any difference or improvement in cold shifting.

My thoughts when I saw the wether, In the U.K. we don't see the sun that often. I have used the 1st to 3rd method for the last 10 years , I only takes a few miles until the gear box is warm enough to work.

Are you running the Redline 75W-90-NS gear oil he recommended? It worked cold wonders for my car.

What worked for me was switching to Redline MTL, worked much better than 75w90NS. Mine is a 91.

I had a Ferrari 348 TB for 19 years and it was always difficult in 2nd gear until warm didn’t take to long to warm up if you found a hill a lot quicker To warm up I never found it a problem, great car can be quite expensive to up keep, the 3 year engine out service a real pain to ownership, I learned a lot in 19 years about the car, sold just to buy a modern fast car ended up with 991.1s good luck to all Ferrari 348 owners a car with a lot of history for Ferrari itself
