I'm so glad you managed to find one of these. A more raucous uncivilised version of the later 512BB - I remember seeing a road test for this at the time and loving the little pull down sunvisors! It was the bogs dollocks at the time. I was later lucky enough to own a carb 308GTB - can't believe how stupid I was to sell it. The crackle from those carbs with the drivers' window cranked a couple of inches was sublime (Rhd version)

I am not normally a nostalgist but the boxer is still my favourite car , it is totally outclassed by modern Ferraris but , for me it retains that indefinable something that has lasted with me these many years , the harsh bark of the flat twelve , the side profile and the rear end view all have lasted as a desirable enticement to buyers of classic Ferraris and this car is indeed a great classic.

Good commentary on the high-profile tires. Plus, those tires just look RIGHT on these cars. The suspension would not cope with low-profile tires. I know you lose some accuracy in steering with high-profile tires, but I just put a set on my MINI Cooper S and it really works for the car. But my MINI is a bulldog compared to that 365 GT4 BB.....beautiful car.

Henry is lucky that the car he got to drive has a big steering wheel spacer fitted. This gives a much better chance of achieving a comfortable driving position. Great review by Mr Catchpole. Isn't it odd the more "advanced" new cars get,the more car nuts long for the cars of yesterday. That "it" factor's been designed out of them now.

Most modern sports cars look more like advanced kitchen appliances than anything else, with their over-abundance of ugly, geometric, details breaking up the lines of the car. The BB, and the Lamborghini Miura, that it was a response to, are just svelte with the barest of design details that complement the look of the cars rather than distract from them.

@Kneedragon19628 жыл бұрын
I believe those early BB cars were quite lovely to drive at medium speed, but they became a bit of a handful if you tried to push them. As mentioned, the engine was on top of the gearbox, which was not ideal, and like the Countach, manufacturers hadn't quite worked out what the suspension and alignment settings should be yet... Correct 'normal' front engine dynamics was pretty well understood, but getting a mid engine to work right was a bit of a new thing...

+ianiva I'm right there with you, never knew this existed. Talk about an automotive unicorn. Any idea what the differences between a 180 degree V engine and a boxer engine are? I know BB always stood for Berlinetta Boxer so i just assumed it was a boxer engine, but he made sure to say it's not one but rather a 180 (flat) V12
+damieg82 Basically in a boxer engine each pair of pistons operate "in phase", so the opposing cylinders ignite simultaneously. In a 180° V engine each pair of pistons share a crankpin, so they fire "out of phase" with each other (when one goes up, the other goes down).
@ffcracker8 жыл бұрын

@HenryDavidFloyd8 жыл бұрын
+damieg82 Boxer has every single piston with its own connection to the crankshaft, in an alternate fashion, meaning opposing cylinders fire simultaneously, "boxing" each other like fists. 180 degree V, each pair of opposing pistons shares a single connection to the crankshaft, so they are always moving in opposite directions, not "boxing" each other.

The reasons why the car never sold in the US had nothing to do with Enzo. FIAT was running the road car division with zero input from EF from 1970. The marketing connection of this car was to the 312 F1 motor, and no one in the US cared about F1 in the 70s.

@cjones78548 жыл бұрын
If just the accelerator is worn than it could be from the owner starting up the car and revving it few times once a week or something. That would keep the car running without putting miles on it. I would guess you're right if the brake pedal shows wear though.

Shape. Boxer is as the name suggests basically a square box while a V is obviously in the shape of the letter 'V'. 180 just means its rotated
@inkno7018 жыл бұрын
altern8ive Thanks haha! So all it means is boxer engines have a separate crank journal for each piston versus flat V have two pistons per crank journal.
@inkno7018 жыл бұрын
CyberTigerCro You should read altern8ive's link
@HenryDavidFloyd8 жыл бұрын
+CyberTigerCro Nope, you actually got it completely wrong. 180 degree V engines are shaped exactly like boxers, with all of the cylinders lying flat (180 degrees apart from each other). The difference is more technical: a boxer has every single piston with its own connection to the crankshaft, in an alternate fashion, meaning opposing cylinders fire simultaneously, "boxing" each other like fists. 180 degree V, each pair of opposing pistons shares a single connection to the crankshaft, so they are always moving in opposite directions, not "boxing" each other.

With the Dino being a six cylinder and V8 coming down the line, the switch to a liter and engine number nomenclature makes perfect sense. 512 is a five liter 12. 246 is a 2.4 liter 6. Makes perfect sense Henry :) Also, in the real world, not what journalists said, the 512 is a better car than the 365 as one would expect from a car that has evolved from the 365 much like a 355 is better than the 348.
