This has been going on for a long time and not in just the US. My grandfather told me a story that he once deposited his Ferrari 400i at Ferrari of Clermont Ferrand in France for some repairs. A salesman decided to take him on test drive of a customer's 512. It came up during the test drive that the dealer would roll back the miles so the customer would be unaware his car was used for marketing purposes. It sent a cold down my grandfather's spine as he wondered if the dealer was doing the same thing to his car.

I think you're giving some Ferrari dealers too much credit. I'm willing to bet that some dealers who took a used ferrari in trade rolled back the odometer to get more on the resale. Even if the dealer is selling on consignment they have a motivation to rollback to increase both their profit and the private sellers profit.

When I was a kid I stole $20 from my Dad and got caught he was mad but after 6 months went by I figured he forgot about it. Then one night we were eating with some company at the house and our family friend took his wallet out of his pocket and put it on the table. My dad said from across the room don't leave your wallet there my son will take it and explained in front of everyone what I did. Later that night he lectured me for a long time and explained that when you get caught in one lie you will forever be labeled a lier. After that day I never let anything like that happen ever again. And it has been huge for me in business today I buy real estate and can go to my investors anytime I want and borrow millions of dollars. Some of them don't even ask where the property is I just tell them the terms and they sign the check. Your word is everything never lie, cheat, steal or take shortcuts. I see it all the time in Real Estate funny thing is those guys are the ones who always end up losing in the end. Put in the work and time and its not hard to make it in this world.

I could have handed them a bill for a chemical wash and said it looks good now. But I didn't,I showed them the pics and explained what I thought happened so someone didn't get in trouble. Those same properties sign my invoices without ever reading them now. And you never know who you might run into down the road. The one you padded the ticket on or did shotty work for. Kharma.

@tscooter226 жыл бұрын
Rollback to zero miles, yes. Rollback for legit reasons to a specific documented mileage reading (as Rob Mentioned with the failed dashboard), I might understand. I remember back in the 80s there were lots of people who would disconnect the speedometer/odometer cable. Then later on, some of them told me how they manually turned the mechanical odometer wheels on the dashboard.They acted like it was okay because everyone else was doing it. :rolls eyes:
@GearheadDaily6 жыл бұрын
Ugh, tell me about it. I dont get that mentality at all.
@NamesAA6 жыл бұрын
Why? That still doesnt make sense. It should keep the original mileage. Because it still has those miles on the car. Idc if someone slapped paint on the thing, it still has mileage on it.

A full resto makes perfect sense to start the odometer over. Every part is virtually new.

Gearhead Daily Ok but its not? Do you think they throw out every little part and use a new unibody? Are they throwing away perfectly good pistons rods crank block heads etc not even mentioning differentials transmissions, stress on the frame/body from potholes.... A 0 mile car has 0 miles. A 50k mile car thats been "restored" is a 50k mile car thats been restored. 2 different things

Odometer rollback is an everyday thing in South Florida. I've ran five VIN numbers on Carfax recently and all of them were rollbacks . One of them was rolled back only 25k miles but found one that was a 200k miles
@larryzeldin75616 жыл бұрын
Rollbacks is one of the main reasons why I started leasing brand new cars instead of buying pre owned used cars that came off a lease or were traded in. I would estimate that atleast 50 percent of the cars that are on the road as of today have been rolled back. Sometimes you can spot them based on wear and tear but most of the time it’s really hard because used car dealers roll back 20k-30k miles. That mileage difference on a couple year old basic luxury car like a Lexus or bmw will make the car atleast $10-15 thousand dollars and that’s a lot for a used car dealer. Most of the time rolling back odometers is what keeps used car lots/dealers in business and making good money. We have used car lots all over here in New York and their overhead is really high and inventory doesn’t move as fast... sometimes I see the same 15-20 cars on the used car lot for months but when he finally sells one he will make a good amount of money thanks to a roll back. As far as how much it costs for a civilian to get their mileage rolled back is depending on make and model of your car. Generally a Benz or bmw will be close to a grand because the mileage is stored in numerous places but I think it’s BULLSHIT. I think you get charged more by a mechanic just because you drove in with an expensive car because my friends 2016 Honda Accord was quoted $200-$400 and my bmw 550i was quoted $800-$1200

Thanks Rob, I wasnt aware rollbacks were that widespread. I test drove a Porsche Boxster once the owner said it had 40,000Kms on the clock but when I drove it the steering wheel, dash and interior trim looked like it had done over 100,000 kms. And driving the car also felt like it had higher mileage on it rather than 40,000kms. So always be aware if something doesnt make sense something might be wrong.
@edwardjablonski6216 жыл бұрын
Good video, Rob. One thing you mentioned that I tend to disagree with, is that Ferrari "doesn't care" if a car resells for more or less money. If Ferrari can achieve market recognition with every one of their vehicles as an appreciating collector asset, then they can subsequently justify higher MSRPs for future models. In other words, if resales are, from the perspective of depreciation percentage, garnering higher dollar amounts on a widespread basis, that does help their brand warrant these astronomical prices when they bring their next flagship to bear.
@Sandy-oy2lr5 жыл бұрын
A very good warning to anyone looking for an expensive used car. If it's too good to be true, it almost always is. And it's always best to have any used vehicle checked out independently by a good tech. You just never know what one will find both inside the dealer level scan tool as well as underneath on a lift.

It is weird how the ODOs work... I had mine rolled back. In my KIA. The dealer had to replace the instrument cluster and as it turned out it was the place where the driven miles is stored. They programmed the new one with approximately same number (actually it was about 800 miles less). Non significant, but true.

Yup, it's really easy to to not record mileage. I was young once. Ford Explorer was as easy as wiring a switch to a certain fuse and you just turn it off and your display with mileage would not record. I've seen fancier setups in GM vehicles where it's wired to the cig lighter and you disable it by pressing the cig lighter in. Motorcycles can be as easy as unscrewing a cable (had a bike where the cable popped off, once I got around to it I hooked it back up)...LOL Boats are also common, you have a $800,000 boat it's common to discount the hours because you don't want to loose value most people don't use their expensive boats much so you blend right it as "yeah I keep this at the dock as a weekend place". I grew up and I rather not do that shit. Still know someone that does it :-( It's why you got to look real close at whatever you buy and ask yourself does the wear look like it matches the use that is being claimed.
@ccubsfan946 жыл бұрын
Have you seen the ford trucks problem (fleet style). Apparently the system isn’t fully integrated with the frame so what companies would do is buy a high end interior and then swap the cab with a cheap one. They put the miles on it then after a while swap the cabs back. So you have a 200k lariat or king ranch that says it has 10k on it.
@chrisgagnon46086 жыл бұрын
I worked at LandRoverNorthAmerica. We had a special device that would zero out mileage, but only in ONE situation. The way the mileage works on landies is, the mileage is stored in both the cluster and the body ECU. If you swap out either, the other updates the mileage with the value stored. So, a tech would grab an ECU or Cluster out of an inventory car to try in a customer car during the diagnostic process. BOOM! Instant brand new rover with 120K miles on it! Then they would fill out REAMS of legal paperwork, and send the item back to us for clearing. The device was potted with brown epoxy, so we never knew the schematics and components to make another...

Look at the brake pedal. The corners start getting smooth around 50,000, and wear through to metal around 100,000. That being said, look at the pedal wear on old cars, and check the mileage on them for yourself, it's really easy to get a pretty good sense of the car's actual mileage from the wear on the pedals.

As an independent shop owner, I own many factory scan tools and just looked up the DEIS system, and can purchase the software alone. With that being the case, I would also be able to roll back the mileage. I would have call Ferrari and tell them why, which as you said, could make up any reason, get the code and set the mileage back. Most manufactures no longer allow this and you have to order a new cluster and the mileage comes programmed into the cluster, PCM, BCM, where ever its stored in that particular car. Ive never seen an ODO rolled back to 0 Its always been the last known service.

Would you please educate me on the theory behind having the rear wing winglets hang below? I think I know the advanced concept behind this; but I'll feel better after you explain that concept; please Sir. Thank you. Publicly I deny having binge watched all of your content; but between you and me, I have.

Considering you buy Ferraris and presumably want to keep buying Ferraris in the future you aren't exactly going to rat out yourself or your dealers. Those ultra low mileage Ferraris and Lamborghinis always seemed suspicious, now we know why. My neighbor bought his 16M Spider with 2,500 miles on it when it was 4 years old and it always seemed weird someone would buy such a beautiful and amazing car like that and then only put 2,500 miles on it in 4 years.

There is no justification ever, ever for rolling back an odometer. It's fraud pure and simple.

The only time I can think of justifying it is if the GAUGES are being taken out to be installed in a totally homemade kit car.

It might not be easy with exotics, but on most basic cars could you not just swap the cluster with another car? Either find one with lower miles entirely, or just put a different one in and swap it back before you sell I have documentation from the government that my car was cluster swapped to show about 55,000km less than what it has on it
