Tiff, I really hope you are able to read this! I have been watching car videos since I was about 17 years old (27 now). Fifth Gear was once of my favorite along with Top Gear but the way you describe the driving experiences are so well thought out and well articulated. I admire the smooth delivery in your videos and even though this car is considered "old news", I feel like I was hearing about it for the first time. Very few car reviewers can do this and I hope to be where you are one day sir! Stay healthy and look forward to more awesome content!! :)

@ 6:44... Thank you Tiff🤝👏👏. "What you want is more weight sent to the driven wheels".. No one has ever said this.. 50/50 weight distribution is a lie
@lovecarsTV4 жыл бұрын
😊
@MrGaryGG484 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed that bit of commentary also since I've been listening to and reading that "tag-line" for more than 50 years. BMW does work hard to meet that 50/50 number and they come awfully close but Tiff's point is well taken and it makes me laugh. My most recent (for the last 8 years) BMW has finally gotten it right!! It's an E46, 330xi, 5-Speed Manual, 4 door from 2001. It is "All-Wheel Drive" and it works very, very well! Tiff does know what he's talking about!! Thanks Tiff, for another excellent review.
@gulf6274 жыл бұрын
I would not say that the 50/50 weight distribution claim is a lie. It is actually very true for front-engine RWD cars. And even for other car architectures it uses to be mostly true for 2 reasons: 1. during acceleration the weight transfer increases the traction (but also true, a weight distribution like the one of the 911s has even greater amount of grip) 2. independently of the architecture for cornering you want to have more or less the same amount of grip in all 4 tires. If the front tires do not see much weight the car will tend to understeer. That was one of the reasons because you should brake later with a 911 (that applies especially for the first generations) to entering the corner with more grip in the front.
@siyandajola5854 жыл бұрын
gulf627 Thanks for your valuable response.. Much respect. However: the concept is whether a car is pulling (FWD cars) or pushing (RWD cars). You have better control when pushing. Take for example when you pushing a trolley when doing your shopping.. when the trolley is full of groceries (I.e. Load is in front and the driven wheels are at the back - which is similar to the case at hand), it becomes difficult to maneuver your loaded trolley because most of the weight is at the front - for arguments sake, we'll assume the weight distribution is 60/40 - the moment you use your weight by pushing down from the rear and pushing forward simultaneously, you have better traction and "weight transfer" making maneuvering easier. However, once you remove items on your trolley, there's less weight in front and therefore when turning to the next isle or maneuvering your cart, you'll note that the front "dives" into corners and the cart/trolley will take advantage of of this especially when you exit the corner or turn and will grip harder and or better. I'm not saying the car must have 90% of its power sent to the rear, I'm just acknowledging the fact that Tiff is spot on when he says "there should be more weight distributed to the driven wheels".. whether or not there is a heavy V12 engine in the front, those engineers must counter that weight and sent more of the same to the rear. BTW.. I sincerely like your comment 🤝
@gulf6274 жыл бұрын
@@siyandajola585 as you probably know there are two important parameters in vehicle dynamics. The first one is the already discussed weight distribution and the second one is the moment of inertia of the car about its vertical axis. That is, how "far away" are the masses from the COG (center of gravity). Two cars could present the same weight distribution and even weight and very different moment of inertia. For example middle engine sportcars have lower moment of inertia. This parameter matters most in changing direction and not so much in stationary cornering. In your example of the trolley, what you actually feel in this case is the moment of inertia not the weight distribution, as you push and steer the trolley from the back. If the masses are far away from the rotation point you must apply a bigger moment to steer it. Also in this example the grip level of the from wheels doesnt matter much, so it is difficult to interpolate this to the real vehicle dynamics problem. Regards

I appreciate how Needells boned up on the stats as well as adding a little of his own wisdom on the subject, all packaged in a reasonable production tied with a bow at the end with the hillside horsey. It certainly makes a change from video diarists with little more insight than, 'woo, look how fast she goes' (although they do have their place in the scheme of things). We're all rooting for better and bigger things for your channel. All the best.
